I know current learning models work a little like neurons but why not just make a sim that works exactly like how we understand neurons work

Think of the universe as a painting. There's the image made in paint, and the surface it was painted on. The canvas.

The stars, the planets, the gasses, the matter and energy and even the space between are the paint. What's the canvas? Is there a canvas? Would the canvas follow the same rules as the paint?

Experiencing firsthand how difficult an aging alcoholic, quadriplegic, post stroke, narcissistic, demented or simply ‘nothing’s wrong with me, I can drive, I don’t need those meds, I don’t need to go to a nursing facility’ kinda parent surely gives you some insight on what to do, what not to do and how to prepare for our own aging and eventual demise.

How do you plan to age gracefully and what advice do you have for us all?

I am not an audio person, so do not have much idea about technical terms - but I hear the words "bass" and "treble" almost everywhere now, especially in the equalizer app that came with  a new bluetooth earbuds that I bought (yes, I am still very much a wired-earbud guy, just dipping my toes in the wireless earbud ocean).

So what do these "bass" and "treble" mean? I guess I hear the sounds to be different when I monkey around with the equalizer. The sound is slightly deep/full for "bass" and less so for "treble".

Is that all?

Been homeless over 6 years. My social services agency, high turnover. Being female , almost all my case managers have been female, standard practice.

Out of 17 case managers, only 2 have been male. Female cms: detailed, logical, responsive, solution oriented, clear effective communication. Male cms, the opposite.

I try to communicate clearly, effectively, which is easy cuz autism, and the 2 male cms, i get constant 2nd guessing, passive-aggressive defensiveness. Get impression they're automatically assuming I don't think clearly, don't know what I'm saying. It's weird, and I can't figure out why.

I know not all men are the same. I'm not like all women. Have I just been unlucky with these 2 cms, or is there a gender aspect to this I'm not understanding? I'd like to learn.

And when did you / the person you know realize he was scammed?

What tips do you have for people who haven’t lived this, so they don’t fall for it?

How long till they start asking for money?

What sites do scammers use? Can it be a facebook group or is it only limited to dating sites?

I've always found the Matrix User option that Lemmy has quite interesting, but I have noticed that...it does not even show up anywhere?

The fact this option exists is cool, but what is the use if it doesn't show up anywhere?

I went to some palestine protests a while back, and was talking to my brother about the organizing, when revealed something I found pretty shocking, we (the protesters) had acquired a permit to hold the protest. Apparently this is standard policy across the US.

More recently, my University is also having protests, and in their policy, they also require explicit approval for what they call "expressive activity". I'm pretty sure not having a permit has been used as an excuse to arrest students in some other campuses.

My question is as the title, doesn't this fundamentally contradict the US's ideals of free speech? What kind of right needs an extra permit to exercise it?

When I was talking to my brother, he also expressed a couple more points:

  1. The city will pretty much grant all permits, so it's more of a polite agreement in most cases
  2. If we can get a permit (which we did) why shouldn't we?

I'm assuming this is because of legal reasons, they pretty much have to grant all permits.

Except I think this makes it all worse. If the government grants almost all permits, then the few rare times it doesn't:

  1. The protest is instantly de-legitimized due to not having a permit
  2. There's little legal precedent for the protesters to challenge this

And then of course there's the usual slippery slope argument. You're giving the government a tool they could expand later to oppress you further. Maybe they start with the groups most people don't like and go up from there.

He lives in Nevada, she lives in Ireland. He's single and is going to graduate college this summer and do "remote work" in IT. He's known for a long time she can't safely fly due to a nut allergy.

My question is once this procedure has been completed and say the person really got into some heavy cardio and thus were burning a lot of fat would the body be able to burn the fat that was moved to the buttocks or does it not have the associated blood vessels to enable this?

I’m not even sure if that’s how lipids are metabolised, but I assume it’s through the blood.

I do not know if it's true for all countries, but at least the USA and the UK require your passport to be signed to be valid. And I know that when I fly, I sometimes get checked if it is signed.

Is there a practical reason for this? Does the signature get checked against anything? Or is it simply that the law says a passport must be signed to be valid, so there you go?

I googled around a bit, but only found resources on how to sign, but not why it needs to be signed.

Thank you Internet hive mind!

I've never been that far to the south but lately I've been reading and watching those novels and movies.

The prevalent idea is: in this world (Texas?) you are alone, nobody gives a cr*p about you, do not trust anyone because they'll take advantage of you, ridicule and mock you. The world (or maybe only Texas?) is an inhospitable, inhuman, Darwinist place.

Each of the companies that we have talked to for Hot air balloon rides have said you pay for it in advance, then if there is bad weather, you don’t get your money back. You just have to reschedule for another day. We have a friend who had to make many many many trips an hour and a half each way and each time on the way there, they would get a call to say sorry it’s too windy or some other item. It took a long time before they actually got there actual ride.

So what I’m wondering is, is there any company out there that actually just gives a refund if you can’t take the ride because of inclement weather.? This is in the United States.

I know that DNA encodes proteins. Truthfully, everything besides that (including 'what are proteins') mostly wooshes over my head, but that's not relevant because whenever I search this question I never even find it addressed anywhere.

The human body has, among other things, two hands each with five fingers, with a very particular bone structure. How are things like that encoded in DNA, and by what mechanisms does that DNA cause these features to be built the way they are? What makes two people have a different nose shape? Nearly everyone in my family has a mole on the left side of their face, how does that come about from DNA?

I'm sure there are many steps involved, but I don't see how we go from creating proteins to reproducibly building a full organism with all the organs in the right places and the right shapes. Whenever I try to look this up, all of these intermediate steps are missing, so it basically seems like magic.

As I said, any explanation will most likely go over my head and I won't be able to understand it fully, but I at least want to see an explanation. I'll do my best to understand it of course.

I'm a man and so far this has happened only with other men, but I'm genuinely baffled as to why some people do this. It has happened thrice so far in 3 different work settings:

One was a fifty-ish coworker who, 3 minutes after knowing me started a monologue/rant: 'I'm very Christian, there are too many migrants and refugees in this country, when their wars are over, we have to send them all back'. Kept repeating the 'very Christian' part quite often and talking about his conservative wife. I sat there, not knowing how to react until he said 'but let's not talk about politics'. We parted ways. I didn't work with him after that.

Another one is even better: no more than 4 minutes after knowing him on our first shift together: 'democrats and unions are useless (this was working in an unionized hospital where the union got us a raise, including his), there are too many Arabs in America, if Biden keeps letting migrants in, there's going to be another civil war, when Trump wins everything is going to be better, you're lucky to be only part Mexican, because you don't look too dark. When I was younger I was a right wing extremist, but not anymore and I'm not racist, because I'm married to a Croat.'

Speechless as well. How do I react to that?

The third one was not so unhinged, but opened his wallet to show me pictures of his service in the navy and then started to talk about his health issues. 20 minutes in our first shift together.

Why do some men do this?

Is this a way to test the waters to see how ideologically similar we are? Not everyone is going to think like you. Why alienate coworkers?

I'd never talk about my health issues with a person I barely know. You put yourself in a position to be exploited.

Do only older white conservative men do this?
