When I kiss my dog on the head does he know it's a sign of affection?

My teacher used to be very angry all the time. She always had a tensed face and would keep a ruler with her. This was to hit students who could not remember things she had taught. At times she would burst out in anger and start yelling. She would talk like a dictator, not wanting anyone other than herself to talk.

For me she set an example of how not to be around people. If I get angry I sometimes remember how I felt when she used to yell, and so I calm myself down.

So why do we get carried away by our emotions? Anger, hatred and jealousy has always worked against us. No situation has been solved by anger, and it even creates bad health for the person who is angry.

This quote by Sadh-guru sums it all ~”As long as there is anger, irritation, hatred, jealousy, and intolerance in you, you are like a bomb, ready to explode anytime.”

Who all have experienced such people who are like ticking time bombs, just ready to get angry at any moment?

I was talking to someone I used to work with and we were talking about money and stuff. I told him about me spending £40 on makeup recently and he said that I really need to save money and stop wasting it. Yet in the next sentence he was talking about buying a video game that's about £40 also. So makeup and stuff like that is a waste of money but not video games?

I've noticed that with a lot of people. They talk about xyz being a waste of money yet spend their money on stuff that's really not necessary either. What gives?

I take my job very seriously, it's the most important thing in my life at this point. I have never been involved with anybody in the company that I work at. It's just my way of seperating my professional and personal life. Around 2 weeks ago, we hired an analyst in my junior team who's smoking hot. I mean, a brunette Margot Robbie.

We have flirted back and forth a bit at work but I'm hesitant to sleep with her as I'm not sure how it'll affect our dynamic at work. She reports to me as I'm the senior associate. I feel like this could go wrong in many ways but she's almost too beautiful to pass up

Edit: I've decided not to chase it. Too much risk. I just need to stay sober during the corporate festivities.

We're always told men NEED sex and if they're not getting it from you they're getting it from somewhere else? I'm more interested in what the men have to say.

I hate throwing away junk mail all the time. Not only is it a waste of time, it is unhealthy for humanity.

We have phones. We have emails. Let's at least end nature killing from junk mail.

I was talking to a guy I work with, I work at a part time student type of job while I’m studying at university. I was asking him what his plans were for the future, and he said nothing, he just wants to work here for a long while, and that he’s not doing a degree. I’m not judging him, if that’s what he wants to do, that’s fine, but like, why does it seem like some people lack the drive to reach greater heights? Whereas others seem naturally inclined to push themselves until they succeed

I'm 19, I started a new job recently. I work at a wearhouse now. I really haven't been in the working world long, probably only for 2 months. Before I was at the warehouse, I was at a nursing home in dietary aid doing dishes and only worked there for a month and left for the other job. But my coworker training me, our desk are on two different walls and we sit back to back. There's usually not much to do, and I get on my phone and start doing whatever. She's gotten onto me about being on my phone. One time she turned around to see what I was doing and I was on my phone and she said "okay, you are on your phone WAY too much! We're here to work and get paid for it, not here to be playing on our phones! When you look over at me do you see me messing around on my phone?"

I'm conscious because I feel like my stomach is big, but when I ask my family, they said I'm not fat. I'm "medium". What do you think? Please be honest!

Genuine question, as I've lived fairly close to Ontario and BC for most of my life and I've never noticed a difference between Canadians and Americans, aside from politics/government.

It seems to me the only real difference is that Canadians don't want to be called Americans (fair enough lmao).

When I was little I totally thought that when people said “round of applause!” they were saying “round of a-claws!” like it was an Italian person referring to hands as claws 😂

For instance, an exaggerated example, I don't think that generally speaking, a 4 foot tall MMA fighter could beat a 6'8, 300lb man in peak physical condition with no fight training. Maybe I'm wrong though. Maybe he could.

At what point is training generally not going to be enough (if there is such a point)?

President Biden has recently said he had to reluctantly use Trump-appropriated funds to allow for construction of 20 miles of border wall.

According to the AP, he had to waive federal laws to do so. But he’s also said he had no choice, the money was already appropriated and the law requires funding to be used as approved and the construction to be finished in 2023.

As someone who is not at all familiar with Federal law… why wasn’t it an option to re-appropriate the funds for something else? Like I get that he didn’t want to go against the laws… but it sounds like he had to waive 26 federal laws to build to wall anyways. So why not go against federal laws to not build the wall, given that’s the course he would rather take?

I saw these fun bear facts this week and they seem to fly in the face of each other. How does this work? Do they just take massive 100 pound dumps when they wake up?

Original Title: When I was a kid in the early 90's, my parents would tell me "you can always trust the police, they're you're friends and they want to help you." Has something changed, or have parents always said that despite knowing it isn't true?

For context, my parents were drug addicts and had been arrested multiple times, so they could have easily told me F*** the police, but instead they made sure I didn't hate or fear them. But as an adult, I've never seen any reason to trust them, and have seen plenty of reasons to fear them. I've never committed a crime, never even gotten a speeding ticket, but even as an innocent, law-abiding citizen I feel afraid to even look at a cop the wrong way.

Has it always been this way, or has something changed since the 90's? Were cops as brutal, dishonest, and trigger-happy then as they are now and my parents just didn't want me to be afraid of them regardless? Do parents today still tell their kids that the police are their friends and that they can trust them?

One time I was at Starbucks and the lady asked was I in line, I said yes. She made an off hand comment to her friend “i would have thought that she would be in school by now” this was when I was in college. Before lockdown, this lady carded me for beer and she looked up and down my ID more than 2 times. My friend said “can’t believe it, right?” Then nowadays when I go shopping, I just don’t get welcomed or greeted like other customers, and no eye contact at all as if I’m being a bother to them. Sometimes, workers would watch me as if I’m going to steal stuff. It’s typical for kids in this city to steal things. Most people don’t really keep an eye for older folks.
