Hi Self-Hosters!

This is another 6 month update on Memories, the FOSS Google Photos alternative that runs as a Nextcloud app. For the last update, see this post.

More than 15 versions of Memories have been released since the previous post, so I will quickly summarise all the new features here!

Website:

Demo: (hosted in San Francisco on a free-tier VM)

GitHub:

Massive Performance Improvements

The most recent update (v7.1.0) completely overhauls the the core querying infrastructure. Memories now scales even better, and can load the timeline on a library of ~1 million photos in approximately just a second!

Upgrading to Nextcloud 28 is strongly recommended now due to the huge performance improvements and bloat reduction in the frontend.

Note: while MySQL, MariaDB, Postgres and SQLite are all still supported, usage of SQLite is discouraged for performance reasons, especially if you have multiple users. Installing the preview generator app also remains important for performance.

Bulk File Sharing

You can now select multiple files on the timeline and share them as a link or as flies from your phone!

Multiple file sharing

Bulk Image Rotation

You can now select multiple images and losslessly rotate them together. Note that this feature may not work on all formats (especially HEIC and TIFF) due to unsupported metadata orientation.

In the future, we plan to support lossy rotation as well for these types of files.

Bulk image rotation

Setting cover images for Albums, Places, People and Tags

You can now set a custom cover images for albums and other tag types. Shared albums will automatically also use the owner's cover image, unless the user sets their own cover image.

Setting cover image for face

Basic Search

Easily find tags, albums and places in the latest release with a basic search function. This is the first step towards a full semantic search implementation!

Basic search in Memories

RAW Image Stacking

RAW files with the same name as a JPEG will now be stacked to hide duplicates. This behavior is configurable and can be turned off if desired. For any stacked files, you can open the image and download the RAW file separately.

RAW image stacking (with live photo!)

Android app is open source and on F-Droid

The source of the Android app can now be found in the Memories repository and the app is also available on F-Droid (thanks to the community). Countless bugs have also been fixed!

Upload through Memories

You can now upload your photos to Nextcloud directly through Memories. If you're in the Folders view, Photos will automatically be uploaded to the currently open folder.

Docker Compose Example

An "official" docker compose example can now be found in the GitHub repo for easier deployment. Docker or Nextcloud AIO continues to be the recommended deployment method since it makes it much easier to set up hardware accelerated video transcoding.

Full Changelog

Many other improvements, features and fixes were introduced in the these releases. A full changelog can be found at

As always, if you use and enjoy Memories, leave a star at the GitHub repo 🎉

Hello folks!

This is a quick round up of new features and fixes with Memories v7 (the FOSS Google Photos alternative that runs over Nextcloud)

Website / docs:

GitHub Repo:

Demo: (not updated to v7 yet)

Custom Cover Images

This has been a long awaited feature! You can now set cover images for albums, places, people and tags from one of the photos in the particular cluster.

This update also fixes a recurring issue with cache invalidation for cover images. If you move an image out of a cluster, the cover will be updated automatically now.

Custom cover images

Direct upload through web interface

You can now upload files to folders through the Memories app itself! (another long awaited feature)

Web upload

Performance Improvements

Reverse geocoding in particular is now 100x faster on some platforms (Postgres and MySQL, no change for MariaDB users). You will need to run occ memories:places-setup once again after the update to re-enable the "Places" tab. Your data will not be affected.

Other smaller features

  • Hide files starting with . in the timeline
  • Support for 3GP videos
  • Option to show metadata in slideshow
  • Improve UX of image editor especially on mobile
  • Android app is now available on F-Droid

You can find the full changelog here:

As always, if you find Memories useful, please consider leaving a star on the GitHub repository 🎉

Why is this software so slow? It takes many seconds for a page to load. Running latest AIO, core i5, 8GB RAM, NVMe, removed collabora, talk and other cpu consuming parts, kept Redis. This should be enough for this thing to load reasonably. On a powerful phone, the webpage doesn’t even load, though the app is usable.

AIO runs apache, postgres and Redis containers.

I login to Dropbox, Gdrive, Filrcloud, Synology and they are OK. I login to nextcloud, and it takes a lot of time.

Write it in Rust or Go. Any plan?

Is it same for others?

I’m willing to assign 128 GB RAM to a small nextcloud instance, to cache the active parts all in RAM, if this thing can be snappy!

If you're looking for ways to migrate away from OwnCube, stay away from Cloudamo.

In fact, just stay away from Cloudamo, period.

OwnCube is a two-person company from Austria that recently lost its customers' data. Even customers who were paying for a separate backup service lost data, because the backups were on the same drives as all the rest of the system... Yesterday OwnCube suddenly announced that they're shutting down their servers on 17th of February - not giving even two weeks notice.

Cloudamo is the very same company which is trying to capture some users escaping from OwnCube. They have the same web interface and the same legal documents: in Cloudamo's Privacy Policy you can see references to Austrian law, even though they're supposedly from Switzerland, and there's even OwnCube's address:

Stadtplatz 12, Top 2 3860 Heidenreichstein Österreich

Spare yourself the irony and agony of migrating from one flimsy hosting company to the exactly the same flimsy hosting company under a new name.

Just upgraded from 27.x to 28.0.1. Now drag and drop uploads don't work. If I drag a PDF from my desktop to a NC folder, instead of uploading it into the folder, it opens it!

Android app still doesn't open office files (ods, etc). Just hangs when I try and open one. They open fine on IOS.

Hello everyone,

2024 is here! I hope you all made it nicely into the new year! What's been going on in the world of bookmark syncing?

I've been working on migrating the floccus browser extension code to Manifest version 3, which was introduced by Google a few years ago and will become mandatory this summer. Sadly, Firefox has proven to not reliably implement Manifest version 3 yet, at least when floccus is concerned. Firefox users had to experience this the past weeks as I published floccus version 5 which intorduced Manifest v3 support and later had to roll back to Manifest v2, at least for Firefox, because I couldn't get floccus to work reliably on Manifest v3. I'm sorry about this inconvenience for my esteemed Firefox users, and must caution you: please do not switch browsers just because of this. I'm convinced that we need Firefox and Mozilla in this world.

Anyway, apart from the above troubles, Floccus v5 is now being rolled out. I have my fingers crossed that this will go smoothly, but still have too much experience to not go for a staged roll out, so, it might take a few days until v5 reaches your devices.

What's new in v5?

  • First and formost, Accounts are now called Profiles. The wording never made too much sense, in my opinion, but now that's rectified
  • The overview view changed a little to make some thing more accessible and others less, I hope, the new version is more intuitive for everyone
  • Also, there's now a 'Sync all' button
  • There's also a new state floccus can be in: "Scheduled sync" -- this happens when a different floccus client is currently syncing and wee have to wait for our turn. Previously this wait was implicit in the sync process, now it's explicit to avoid confusion and frustration over inexplicably long sync times
  • Floccus now syncs immediatly 3s after browser start, instead of 1 minute, to prevent you having to wait for it
  • The floccus android and iOS app no longer syncs in the background. I removed this, because it was buggy, drained batteries and data for people and not even reliable
  • Another removed feature is the unlock passphrase: It wasn't well thought through in my opinion, and additionally it wasn't possible with Manifest v3. In my opinion, if you are worried about an attacker having access to your computer gaining access to your floccus credentials because they are not encrypted, the attacker will have lots of other ways to get your credentials because they have access to your computer.
  • v5 has also seen lots of smaller fixes, like fixing the HTML format for syncing bookmarks to be compatible with what browsers expect. I also improved the wording in the user interface in many places to make floccus more intuitive to use for new users
  • The iOS is now available as pay-only in order to balance out the developer fees I have to pay to Apple annually. I hope this is acceptable :)

Nextcloud Bookmarks has also seen some love the last couple of months:

  • It now allows javascript links, also known as bookmarklets. Floccus will soon catch up and also allow syncing javascript links via the bookmarks app
  • You can now edit the name of folders that have been shared with you by others
  • The app is now compatible with Nextcloud 26, 27 and 28
  • Importing bookmarks now tries to guess in a smart way whether your bookmarks' creation dates are stored in Miliseconds or seconds (you may call this AI if you like :P )
  • I also fixed the app's service worker, so loading times in the app should be faster again
  • And I fixed that annoying bug that opening a public link would log you out of your Nextcloud

I've also got some time left to look into the remaining open issues on Github and even have some preformance improvements up my sleeve (~200% speed increase when syncing with floccus, anyone?)

I'm very grateful for the support I've received in working on these projects. Thank you to everyone who supported me in these efforts! Also, feel free to shoot me a message, if you have feedback, ideas, critique or just want to say hi.

All the best and godspeed to you, wherever you may be right now :)

Just curious as to why this is. I've been racking my head as a newbie to set up Nextcloud through various ways including aio, docker aio and manual and I keep messing something up. This post isn't asking for help it's more to figure out why most tutorials written or videos go with apache instead of Nginx? The reason I ask if because I already have Nginx running and working for Jellyfin so I would like to stick with nginx and from a video I saw recently it says 50%+ of the Internet is already being ran with nginx so why isn't it more popular?

The serious security flaws in ownCloud (now owned by Kiteworks) do NOT affect Nextcloud. We have strict security processes in place, and do not ship test data from libraries that can cause security breaches.

I'm an audio engineer and for years I've been using Google Drive to exchange mixes with my clients. The problems are that the files can be big, I generally leave them up for archival purposes, so... I'm always on the border of my 15G limit. I was just about to start paying, when I found NextCloud.

I'm a big Linux/FOSS fan so NextCloud is exactly the type of software I love. I did a couple of test installs on an old laptop I had laying around and then decided to install on my Bluehost domain to get the benefit of no SSL errors.

Bluehost gets a lot of flack, but I've been using them for at least 15 years and I've been been very happy with the service. Surprisingly, they don't have a drop-in solution for NextCloud so I had to set up the database manually with phpmyadmin. Not a big deal since I've used that app before.

Now I have a professional looking cloud space where I can even give my bigger clients their own logins to easily exchange elements. My shared links have my domain, and the entire process just makes me look more professional.

I recommend doing a test install locally before attempting it on your hosting service, mostly to make sure you setup the database correctly. Just like with Wordpress, that's the trickiest part if you don't do it often.

Hi folks!

Memories has a new update (v6.1.0) with new features that have been pending for a long time!

RAW files are now stacked and hidden if a JPEG is present

If you have RAW and JPEG copies of the same image, only one copy is now shown by default (can be changed in settings). You can download the RAW file from the menu in the viewer.

RAW stacking

Multiple files can be now selected and shared from the timeline

This is even better on the Android app. Files can be shared either natively or as a link (creates a hidden shared album automatically)

Multi-file sharing

Bulk rotating of images

This feature has some caveats currently. Since it uses EXIF metadata to rotate images, it doesn't work on all formats like HEIC.

Bulk rotation of images

Swipe to refresh on timeline

Another feature that has been asked for many times. After auto uploads are done, you can just swipe to refresh the timeline.

Many bug fixes:

Upgrade Notes

You need to run the android app v1.6 for the sharing features to work properly. Likewise, the v1.6 app will only work with the latest server app version (v6.1.0)

The v1.6 app is still under review on Google Play, but now can also be downloaded from GitHub releases:

As always, please leave a star on GitHub if you use and enjoy Memories

I'm trying to get a NAS. I don't know yet if it will be a Synology or a TrueNAS running on a computer that I have collecting dust. The biggest point of conflict right now is at the software space. If I had a good photo and file management I don't mind going with either and maybe I would prefer the TrueNAS route as I already have the computer. The big question for me is, I don't want to rely on single person projects on GitHub because I'll be storying my memories on that software so it really should work well, that's why I thought on using NextCloud. Strange enough every mention that I see on the self host reddit channel is to go to Immich, ProtoPrism, or Synology, there is little to no mention to NextCloud. There is anything that I should be aware of? At the moment I have something like 4TB of photos and videos of my family that I really want to migrate off cloud services.

The release brings the following enhancements:

  1. You can pause slideshow playing by touching the screen, when slideshow is in pausing state, you can slide back and forth in the album, zoom in and out. If photo has caption, it will be shown, if the caption is very long, it will get automatically scrolled too. And also you can rotate your screen while the slideshow is playing.
  2. When you geotagging your albums with GPX file, timestamp matching will be done base on geo point's timezone, and option provided to do daylight saving time adjustment too. All you need is making sure your phone and camera's date time is correctly adjusted to the local time.
  3. Caption, location tagged by GPX and taken time edited by renaming, all these meta data changes are saved in sidecar file. With this new release, Les Pas makes sure these meta data will be preserved when you re-scan meta data for the album, copy or move photos to another album, or Snapseed editing your photo.

I have a nextcloud instance running on unraid. It's publicly accessible through end-to-end ssl certs from cloudflare and npm. I noticed when I first start the container, nextcloud is pretty fast but over time it begins to slow down. I'm using postgresql and redis for database. I don't have really any apps installed, only onlyoffice integration, and I host onlyoffice separately.

What specificly can I check to see what is slowing down my container?

I've got an unused laptop that I've been wanting to do something useful with, and I thought it'd be a good excuse to turn into a Google Drive replacement with NextCloud. However, the primary reason I currently use GDrive (as opposed to other cloud sync software) is because I can do my work over the web through Google Docs and Google Spreadsheets and the like, without ever needing to fill my harddrive space with those files. Is this something I'll be able to do with NextCloud? I've heard of their integration with office suits (relatedly: is LibreOffice included?) but I don't know if that's for the desktop client, and I'd still have local copies of my files, or if that's for a web client and I wouldn't need to have local copies unless I wanted to have a backup.

Thank you in advance for any responses; I hope I don't come off as too green in this!

Heyall

Just installed a Nextcloud using

Nextcloud Version 27.1.0.7

When I run the security check with it says my Version is not on the latest patch level.

  1. Is it just not set to the correct version in the scan?
  2. Does the scan check .htaccess rewrites? I use OpenLiteSpeed as Server and am still a bit unsure if I can trust the security scan score.

Thanks in advance!

Not sure if anyone needs this, but I just updated my NC via docker (non-aio) and it worked perfectly. I do have a fair amount of plugins running too.

Just in case, anyone else is as anxious as me when it comes to major updates.
