I've let the survey run for long enough now I suppose (at least I'm not getting any new responses) so I'm making this post with the "results". If anyone is interested in the raw data I'll post it but for now I'll just focus on the conclusion I've drawn from it.

For the most part responses only varied slightly but most of the questions were only there to help make a decision about the core question: What do you want to happen with this instance now?. The responses to which varied a lot compared to the other questions.

There were some votes against opening up the instance to other series discussions but I myself and the majority of votes are in favor so that's what will happen. However I really dislike seeing empty discussion threads so there will be some rules in place so this doesn't end up like a spam machine. As is with all things in life these are subject to change.

#1: There must be at least 3 users interested in regular discussions for a series to create a community for it here. There should be some regular volume of discussion for the series and 3 core users should facilitate that.

Note: If there already are discussion or fan art posts for a series on the Fediverse feel free to provide some of them to show that the newly created community would not just rot in a corner.

#2: If the series does not have weekly chapters there should be some form of plan for how to structure this so there is regular activity.

There is little sense in using a community only for volume discussions and nothing else those could just as well take place in [email protected]. As such there should at least be some discussion in between volumes (discussions about characters, fan art, whatever really)

Note: If the series does not release on J-Novel Club please be aware that @[email protected] will be unable to automatically create posts for it. In those cases threads need to be manually created every week.

If anyone is interested in a series and thinks they can meet these 2 rules please message me either here or via Matrix (@neshura:neshweb.chat) so we can discuss the details.

Additionally I'll post a list of links to any volume or chapter/part discussion threads to the weekly thread over at [email protected]. It's something I should have done with the PrePub discussions for Ascendance of a Bookworm as well but I didn't think of it until now.

What is bookwormstory.social

bookwormstory.social is a server that hosts Lemmy software that mimics behavior of reddit. It enables community to host Our own place for discussion about Ascendance of a Bookworm. But it is more than that, it also has protocol called ActivityPub that connects different servers and their communities. It provides ability to send massages, replays and posts between servers.

Technical Jargon

Instances - Servers hosted by individuals or groups

Communities - Subreddits or places where similar content gets posted

Fediverse - all the projects using ActivityPub protocol

What if I wanted to see other Communities or Instances?

If you wanted for example see other communities I would suggest going to lemmyverse.net/communities and searching for your community. For example we will search for Hermitcraft a minecraft SMP server.
Image of the Lemmyverese communities
Then we will copy a link to the community and put it into a search bar on bookwormstory.social. To access it press magnifying glass in the top right corner. After we will press the "Search" button we need to wait 3-10 seconds. Worth noting that results will be populated by comments mentioning that community.
Image of the search bar
After that we should see an icon with the name of community and subscriber count from our instance. When we click the link to the community and it will direct us to the community page. On the right side or hidden under the "Sidebar" button there will be "Subscribe" button that will enable us to see new posts.
Image of the sidebar
Now we can comment, upvote and post in community that isn't hosted on bookwormstory.social. After subscribing to your community of choice, our instance will receive updates from subscribed communities and will display posts under subscribed tab on the front page. Please note that currently comments take a while to load (5-15 min).

I want to have better experience across Lemmy.

You can install „Instance Assistant” add-on for your browser. It is available for Firefox, Chrome or Edge

This add-on adds a button to automatically open linked communities and posts on an instance that you made an account. It enables easy way to comment on undiscovered posts. It has also various other QOL features.

Hey there's a bug!

Due to software being in practically alpha state there is a lot of bugs so please report them to @[email protected] or to @[email protected]

What if I have more questions?

You can ask them in the comments or in FAQ post

Different look for Lemmy

Frequently Asked Questions (bookwormstory.social)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 11 months ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Are there tags?

Sadly there aren't (yet), for now please put the tag in brackets with the text in caps like so: [ART]

I can't see comments in the posts when viewing the community on another lemmy instance

Federation currently does not fetch past comments only future ones if subscribed, the devs recently have decided to change that but there is no estimate on when

Can I post AI generated Art?

Yes but only if you clearly tag it as such. 1st occurence is a warning and an explanation, second occurence is a ban.

Is this instance only for Ascendance of a Bookworm content?

Yes and No. On this instance communities will be revolving around Ascendance of a Bookworm, but you can still subscribe and contribute to remote communities on other instances.

Can I sign up even though I don’t read the series?

Yes you can, there should be plenty of content for you in the all feed or in one of the federated communities (you can see a list of those here.

Before I get into this I apologize for giving you all a heart attack. Actually no, I know what I am doing with that title, suffer!

Unfortunately the main story of Ascendance of a Bookworm released its last Pre-Pub chapter last week and with it a stop to the very regular weekly discussion threads. Obviously we will have Side Stories to look forward to, however those won't provide nearly the same regularity as the main story did.

Up until now the Pre-Pub threads have been the main driver behind activity on the instance and the closure of the story then opens the question of what will happen to this place going forward. First of all this instance will likely not be disappearing. I have my only active lemmy account on here and since I have 0 real hosting costs I have no problem keeping this going indefinitely, I also think it might be an opportunity to change things up a bit. However first and foremost this is a place for you all, not for me alone, so your opinion about what should or should not happen to this instance weigh a bit more than my own. As such I (with input from ludrol, btw thanks for always being there for me to push decisions onto) have compiled a survey about that topic. Do feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments as well though.

With that out of the way I'd like to express a sincere thanks for all the fun discussions we've had here so far, I genuinely enjoyed every moment of them and look forward to more of them.

The initial hiccups with Federation seem to be resolved with 0.19.1-rc.1. Since I also managed to test the new Version of the Mestionora Bot (it should now actually post Part 2 and Part 3 Manga discussions in parallel instead of only Part 3, hooray) I will update the instance after PrePub discussions die down a bit.

Expected Timeframe is Wednesday 16:00 UTC - Wednesday 18:00 UTC.

During the Update changes to the expected downtime can be checked on status.bookwormstory.social.

If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask away.

Taglines

We want to add Taglines that will be displayed at the top of the site. We would like your help with populating it with quotes from the book. Please leave your suggestions in the comments. They should be quite brief, no longer that two sentences.

Vote For Emojis With Spoilers

We have added some emojis to the instance but they all are anime safe. We would like to know your opinion on adding emojis that are covering characters from part 3, 4 and 5. I will leave a comment and please upvote all the option that you are comfortable with seeing.

Defederation Policy

We would like to incorporate defederation from instances that are part of censure list on fediseer.com. It would help us catch toxic instances quite early. There will also be provided reasoning why we defedarated from certain instances.

Hi guys I recently tested lemmy's email feature and found on lemmy.world there are no issues with email (both in recieving the verification email and replies/messages).

When testing bookwormstory.social however I am unable to recieve emails (both in recieving the verification email and replies/messages).

Background context:

Lemmy.world version --> BE: 0.18.4

bookwormstory.social version --> BE: 0.18.4

same gmail account was used testing.

A silly conversation with myself (for testing)

Hi guys I made a shortcut that autoblurs a selected image, uploads it to catbox.moe, and copies the link. It also automatically uploads a unblured image in markdown syntax so you can directly paste it in post body.

Shortcut:

Actions app (required for blur, its free and open source):

Around after July 30th send notifications to email doesn't seem to work.

Additonally I found the Verify your email address for bookwormstory.social prompt doesn't work.

Edit looks like this is a lemmy bug fro BE 0.18.3

Hi guys, kinda curious on what the stance is on cross posting art from r/HonzukiNoGekokujou. If its allowed (not sure if it is or isn't) kinda curious about how much cross posting would be considered to much.

A handy tool which allows you to backup your profile settings, subscriptions, blocked users, and blocked communities and port it to other instances.

Limitations:

  • Cannot backup your saved posts
  • Cannot backup/auto set your profile description/Profile image picture/Profile banner art

Kinda inspired by this post:

I noticed that 3rd party web lemmy apps like alexandrite.app seem to not funciton with bookwormstory.social due to CORRS. Other instances like lemmy.world seem to work fine.

Not sure if there is an environmental variable change needed to get corrs working (not sure how lemmy works under the hood).

https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3191

https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/3109

Also as a side note vger.app (wefwef) mobile web client does work since it has a proxy function though not sure if it will be removed in the future.

Hi guys kinda found a weird bug on some communities limited amount of content being synced.

Example voyager (only two posts synced over the course of a day)

https://bookwormstory.social/c/[email protected]

https://lemmy.world/c/voyagerapp

Example floating is fun (only new posts are syncing no prior content is syncing)

Not sure if this topic fits in this community but recently my account on a lemmy instance with a .ml extension (lemmy.fmhy.ml) was rendered inaccessible.

While the instance works to a degree (I can set a dns overide to gain acess) due to the broken domain it effectivly renders my account (and the instance lost due to federation).

While bookworm is fine I worry about other instances like lemmy.ml which has the same domain prefix and hosts many communities.

Out of curiosity (this may sound silly) but is it okay to federate (subscribe) to other communities from bookwormstory.social?

Not sure if federationing to non bookworm communities increases load on this instance by a lot and accounts should be only used primarily for bookworm discussion.

Kinda curious on your thoughts on the matter

Hi guys out of curiosity how reliable is image uploads on bookwormstory.social? (curious since this instance has a relativly small userbase 100-200).

On lemmy.fmhy.ml (10k users) image uploading is kinda hit/miss with json errors when uploading images (frequently need to fall back on imgur).

Curious if these errors are due to bugs in lemmy or just the massive load in storing/serving images to users.

Last night the instance lemmy.world suffered a JavaScript injection attack. The attack set out to steal login cookies of users upon visiting infected threads, primarily targeting admins.

Potentially Affected Data

  • E-Mail address stolen and/or changed (if provided in user settings)
  • Password changed

Mitigations

Malicious comments have been replaced by a removal message. I have deployed the UI hotfix and @[email protected] has deleted all Custom Emoji until it is clear whether those are safe to use. Additionally all login sessions have been invalidated as a safety precaution as well, any cookies that were stolen are now rendered useless.

Conclusion

So far it does not seem like this instance was affected.

If you are not using bookwormstory.social and your instance is not on UI Version 0.18.2-rc.1 please be aware that you are likely still at risk of the attack, please check for any announcements of your instance administrators.

Details of the vulnerability are here

I have decided to block Meta's Fediverse platform threads.net. The three reasons pushing me to do so are:

  • Meta's known history of the Embrace-Extend-Extinguush playbook (XMPP)
  • Meta's disturbing data collection practices when it comes to threads.
  • I don't trust Meta to keep their platform properly moderated. Especially since large parts of the fediverse already defederated, reducing the number of independent moderators checking over their content.

Edit: This is preventitive, threads.net does not offer ActivityPub support currently but has announced plans to do so in the future.

Hi guys weird question, I use lemmy's inbox RSS as a sort of pseudo push notification (currently using monito RSS discord bot polling at every 10 min).

I was considering dropping the poll rate to every 1-2 min. Out of curiosity is a rss poll rate of every 1-2 min acceptable or considered excessive.

Primary reason I was considering dropping the poll rate this low is to prevent a notification lag (ie when brosing lemmy via a 3rd party app after viewing and marking a message as read 10 min latter I get a inbox notification for the same message).

Curious on your thoughts
