This is a community meant to discuss Korea and Korean culture for both native Koreans and expats.

Note: I began this community because I'm an expat who lives in Korea, but I would be open to passing ownership to someone who's native Korean or is more integrated than me into Korean culture. If you're interested let me know.

debunking of anticipated liberal comments

norf korea no food

malnutrition was in fact a thing during the 1990s, though the portrayals of this time period, the so called "arduous march" in westen media are usually exaggerated. mostly omitted by american-allied media is the fact that those difficulties were caused by the inhumane and terrorist western sanctions and embargo against the dprk, as well as the cia-backed illegal and undemocratic dissolution of the ussr. nowadays problems regarding food security have pretty much seized to exist in the country.

hermit kingdom

first of all, the term itself is nothing but racist, orientalist nonsense, but whatever... the dprk is in no way a kingdom, its democratic model of governance, while obviously imperfect and worthy of (constructive) criticism, is explained in the constitution and infographic linked above.

furthermore, the county is neither "reclusive", nor internationally isolated. the dprk enjoys very friendly relations with fellow aes china, cuba, laos and vietnam, as well as anti-imperialist nations like iran, russia and palestine. the reason you dont hear much from inside the country is due to western press not wanting to report the truth.

no lights, no electricity

the famous "no lights"-photo is a photoshopped fake initially circulated by a southern far-right tabloid. here is an actual image of east asia, including the korean peninsula:

haircut police

unlike south korea, the dprk never had such policies. here is a very entertaining video debunking that myth.

Why is it allowed? It seems dangerous for drivers and pedestrians

Are there plans to phase it out?

Japan outlaws on-street parking under the logic that it's using public space to house private property.

This is the closest I ever came to the North Korean border. It is not the normal tourist tour to the DMZ, I might do that some day too, instead I'm looking over the water towards North Korea, behind a military checkpoint.

Three North Koreans want to tell the world about the situation in the country.

They expose, for the first time, the disaster unfolding there since the government sealed the borders more than three years ago starvation, brutal crackdowns and no chance to escape.

Under the tyrannical rule of Kim Jong Un, North Koreans are forbidden from making contact with the outside world.

A spokesperson for the North Korean government has disputed the claims, which they said were “not entirely factual”.

"The DPRK puts persons with disabilities on an equal footing with other abled people of society and provides them with genuine rights as the masters of the State and society.

The work of protecting them started since long ago in the DPRK."

I love this nation and its people. If anyone accuses the DPRK of being a "eugenicist" or "fascist" state all while trampling underfoot the disabled of their own nations, they can catch these disabled ass hands. 👊

Someone made an documentary about North Korean Defectors.

A short independent documentary on the world of defectors and South Korean Intelligence (National Intelligence Service, formerly known as the KCIA). The film was made by PSL member David Yun during the month he spent in South Korea in the summer of 2018.

What are your thoughts on this?
