Upfront: the character animation is jank and I have no clue why that was considered acceptable given the overall effort that went into making things look pretty.

I went in with cautious optimism, because it's Netflix and they have a habit of butchering things. Not the case this time. It's 100% a Gundam show, alt-UC or no. My spouse was reluctant to start it tonight because she was beat after work and wasn't sure she was gonna be able to do more than one episode. After said one episode: "I'm awake." And so we finished it.

And now I want all those Zaku kits. Damn.

This was released on twitter as part of the 45th anniversary of Gundam as a franchise and to mark the 2-year anniversary of the original broadcast date of Witch From Mercury (October 2nd, 2022). Check out the Crunchyroll article for additional information. Synopsis of the first season from AniList:

A.S. (Ad Stella) 122

An era when a multitude of corporations have entered space and built a huge economic system. A lone girl from the remote planet Mercury transfers to the Asticassia School of Technology, run by the Beneritt Group which dominates the mobile suit industry.

Her name is Suletta Mercury. With a scarlet light burning in her pure heart, this girl walks step by step through a new world.

I think I'm pre-traumatized just thinking about the implications of this crossover.

Please suggest some Gundam-like shows to watch

Hi all, I came back to anime after a long hiatus thanks to Witch from Mercury.

Since then, I've watched a bunch of anime - including many masterpieces - but nothing could scratch that itch like a Gundam series could.

So now I'm look for more Gundam shows to watch.

It doesn't have to be Gundam exactly (or even anime!). As long as it shares the main features, I would consider it to be Gundam.

From what I observed, the following themes are essential to Gundam series:

War - To be specific, it shows how war is bad, and that nobody truly wins in a war.

Child soldiers - Usually forced to fight, or manipulated into fighting (by people who would usually get revealed to be the real villains later).

Politics - What started the war, or kept the war going. The politicians tend to be the ones manipulating others.

"Mecha" - I am using the term mecha loosely here, because it doesn't really have to be a robot that's piloted. It can simply be some kind of enhancement or weapon of war, or something symbolic.

Tragedy - In war, people are obviously going to die. Personally I would prefer if the main cast gets a happy ending though.

Discrimination - It can be discrimination over race, class, etc.

Other themes that I have noticed are common but not really essential include:

romance subplot - Looks like in war, love gives people hope, as well as the drive to keep on living.

dystopian setting - It could be the lasting effect of previous wars, or the consequences of politics.

Finally, these are not really themes, but I've noticed these trends:

  • there's usually an ensemble cast
  • the protagonist's team tend to switch sides in the later stage of the show to fight against the true villains
  • the mechas would progressively get upgraded over the course of the show

To avoid overlaps, here are the Gundam-like series that I have watched / plan to watch.

Planning to watch (based on hearsay about their similarity to Gundam):

Thanks in advance for the recommendations.

I haven't played any Breaker games before. Seems okayish. Controls are better than SDBA at least. This is probably nostalgia glasses but it still doesn't feel as crisp as the PS2 Versus games. Feels kinda mashy/mushy. Or, you know... skill issue. 😒

The editor lets you get really in the weeds with coloring and markings. But holy crap the button commands are all over the place. All the fun is in the top half... no mixing and matching legs and waists.

Looks and runs well enough on Switch, but the load times leave a lot to be desired. And the lack of cross platform play is killer.

In an earlier gaming age this would be a day one purchase for me just to say, "Yes, more like this please, and keep improving." But I'm wary due to the prevalence of endless monetization and drip-feeding content, especially with the focus on online play, events, etc. I think I'm gonna let this play out for a bit. But I'm glad I got a chance to give it a go.

I was very confused until I saw the Bandai Namco logo and remembered both IPs are owned by the same entity. Now I'm only a little confused.
