Folk and Traditional Music

I like some fairly niche genres, which then makes it difficult to find new music in that genre. Thought it might be worth having a thread where people can post artists they enjoy, but where they're struggling to find similar music, to let the hive mind provide them with ideas!

Not sure if there are many people looking in, but maybe we can get some conversation going....

I'm partial to kamancheh (Persian spiked fiddle), spiked and regular fiddles in general, nyckelharpa, and kudyapi (Philippine boat lute played with a hella groove). I'll add links to examples if anyone is interested.

Lush Balkan Brass, one of my favourite albums. The whole disc is well worth close and repeated listening.

Was able to hear these lads live many years back, when they did a small warm-up tour with a very informal "figuring this out" kind of vibe. It was brilliant and so much fun.

Cool Bandcamp article about the weirdo folk scene happening in Ireland and the UK these days. I got turned on to stuff like The Incredible String Band, Third Ear Band, and Gryphon in my 20s, so this has been great to see. Odd that they didn't mention Broadside Hacks or Junior Brother, but it's still rad.

Can be played in a standard pub session setting on typical session instruments, just bring a kazoo. Check.
Slice of life, common folk details in the lyrics. Check.
Music derives from someone's tradition. Check.
Imma calling Paolo Nutini's joyous Pencil Full of Lead as modern trad/folk, even in his original bluesy/jazzy instrumentation, and no one's going to convince me otherwise ;P

Happy to use this to kick off a discussion on what constitutes trad and folk but I'm not changing my mind regarding this gem :D :D :D

(Fit like is a local greeting, which means What like?/How's it going. Fae is from. NE dialect uses f's for some w's.)

If folk music stands for bringing people together, this is a prime example for it, with a choir of 20.000 people and a powerful arrangement of a traditional song. Enjoy with headphones or a good HiFi system.

I figured there's probably not another user on the federation who could post this, so I might as well. Track 1 is my absolute favourite.

This is the first post in the new folk music community. Use this to say hello and, if you want to, say what kind of tradition you come from or are into. I'll begin saying that I am mostly making and listening to western european traditions, such as Irish jigs and reels or scandinavian polskas.
