California braced for ‘catastrophic’ flooding from storm Hilary

Rare tropical storm has weakening but is expected to bring ‘historic’ amount of rainfall and potentially lethal floods

Tropical storm Hilary has weakened after slamming into California but is still set to cause “catastrophic” flooding, forecasters have warned, with the rare storm unleashing historic levels of rainfall to the US south-west.

The National Hurricane Center by Monday morning had downgraded Hilary to a post-tropical cyclone but added that the storm would still bring a “historic amount of rainfall” that is expected to cause “life-threatening to locally catastrophic flash, urban and arroyo flooding”. The storm would also pack strong winds – of about 30mph – and potential landslides and mudslides.

Donald Trump should drop out of the 2024 race for the White House because polling shows the former US president trailing Joe Biden as he grapples with more than 90 pending criminal charges, according to Republican US senator Bill Cassidy.

Cassidy’s comments to State of the Union host Kasie Hunt were not the first time he has denounced Trump. Smart lighting manufacturer Leviton has a new outdoor smart plug that’s the first to work with Matter. The Decora Smart Wi-Fi Outdoor Plug-in Switch costs $54.99 and is available now at Amazon and The Home Depot. Part of Leviton’s Decora Smart Wi-Fi lighting and load control line, it’s the company’s fifth product to support Matter, following adding Matter support to two of its in-wall switches and smart plugs last month.

The outdoor smart plug works over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, has on / off functionality (there’s no dimming), and a built-in light sensor for automating any lights you plug into it to turn on at night and off during the day. This is a neat feature you won’t find on a lot of smart plugs and means you don’t need to use any app or...
