I tried following the instructions on the website following the easy relay account login setup and nothing is happening. I'm a visual learner and tried to see if there was anything on YT and nada.

For us technical idiots, can someone explain how to set this up? I'm not sure how local network/client works either. It's asking for local IP address but Im on a campus network so idk if that will work.

Thank you!

I went on a big budget app tour when YNAB hiked their prices (it's too much after the exchange rate for me). I remember liking Buckets, but it didn't work for me long-term because I need an app to check my budget on the go.

I eventually ended up back at YNAB. One year later and I didn't want to renew with YNAB if I could avoid it, the cost is just too high when I don't use any of the new products and services that they're rolling out (and the reason for which they charge so much). I manually import account files from my bank, only use the iOS app to check my budget, and don't depend on any other features.

As I was doing a last minute hunt to see if there was an alternative, I'm glad I stumbled upon Buckets again because I see an iOS app is in the works! I also see that there are semi-regular updates and the app is actively being worked on (unlike Actual and Mvelopes which have been sunseted) - so I immediately purchased a license.

I am hopeful that these new updates will keep me from having to depend on YNAB's app anymore. When you're new to Zero Based Budgeting/Envelope budgeting YNAB is an incredible tool and definitely worth paying for. But when you've been using the method for many years, you're paying a ton of money for a spreadsheet. I'm happy to pay for an app and all the work that goes into it, but I don't think I am getting that with YNAB.

Anyways, happy to be back!

I have about 80k in student loans. Half federal and half private. I make about 52K a year as a marketing associate. I graduated about a year and 6 months ago and have been paying the private loans since January of this year which has already been killing my bank account. I have other bills such as rent, car note, insurance and other bills that are inescapable. Now that the the federal loans are about to begin, I have no idea how I will be able to afford this. Does anyone have any ideas of what I should do? Any type of payment plans or programs that can help reduce or forgive parts? Maybe refinance? I really need some advice. Thank you everyone!

If I look at transactions under individual accounts, "Checking" or "Savings" the column widths are very narrow, because there's an extra sidebar showing balances. If I just click on "transactions" in the main sidebar to view all transactions, the "account" column is so wide it pushes the "memo," "amount," and "category" columns off the screen to the right, and I have to scroll to see them. This is something new happening in the last couple of days. But I don't see any way to change the widths. I've tried grabbing a handle to drag, like you would in an excel spreadsheet, but haven't managed to find one. And I've looked in "settings" and found nothing there. Is this something with my display, or are others experiencing this?

Apologies if this has already been answered somewhere, but I've done my best to search for it and can't find it.

The situation is this: I realize I've over-allocated funds to a category, and I need those funds to cover a different bucket. I transfer those funds from Bucket A back to Rain, and then use the funds to fill Bucket B, with the intention of refilling the funds taken from Bucket A at the end of the month when I get paid again.

However, now the layout shows that the full "goal" amount for Bucket A has already been filled (even though it was then taken away not as a transaction) and so it's bar for the month shows up as green and complete, with no prompt to refill the missing amount.

Is there any way around this?

I want to start over with a completely new budget file for all my same bank accounts. I want to keep the old budget file for reasons, so I don't want to use the "start over" tools in buckets. But I can't find how to reuse the simplefin token for the new file, or even where to find the token, now that I've used it.

I figured Buckets users and especially u/iffycan would appreciate this. I was listening to a podcast interview with an author of a book about managing finances as a family. The authors said they have a real issue with the term "Net Worth" because it sounds like the amount of money you have is your worth.

They proposed just calling the amount of money you have "AUM" as in Assets Under Management like brokerage firms (investment companies) would.

The thinking here - we're just temporarily managing whatever resources we have. If you think about it for a second, no matter what your religious beliefs are, this is true. Either as a Christian you believe God owns it all anyway, or if you're an atheist once you pass away your heirs will get everything you owned while alive.

The book is "Simple Money, Rich Life" and it's coming at it from a Christian world view. I haven't read the book yet, but from hearing the interview it's definitely going to be the next personal finance book I read.

Like how do you know that it should be a simple bucket, a recurring expense, save x till y and so on?

Hi all,

I have been trying to use buckets since a few months, and I come from using YNAB. I’m struggling to understand how the balance in each bucket is carried over the months For example, let’s say I have a grocery bucket with a goal of 300 (recurring expense) assigned per month, and I end up using only 200. This means I would still have a balance of 100. Now when I go to next month, I do see a balance of 100 but my bucket want is 0. Now when I „make it rain“, it will assign 300 to the bucket(making it 400 now) but shouldn’t it only assign 200 more as I already have 100 from the previous month?

Could someone explain what that means? How could the total of what's been put in and taken out BE unrelated to transactions? Wouldn't it have to depend on transactions? Or there wouldn't be anything put in or taken out. This is the tool tip that pops up when you hover over "in" on the buckets page.

Hello there. I tested buckets in iOS a while ago and I wanted to give it another shot, but it seems that the app doesn’t allow for more beta testers. Is there a way to use the iOS app? I really want to give it a shot to decide if subscribing.

Hey, I have multiple sources of income and I want to track how much I make from each of them, so I can make individual "income" buckets for them, but then the Rain function is broken.. sorta throws off the whole "budgeting concept" for me if I can't easily give my dollars their jobs..

At the least, I would love to see precise reports for my "💰Income" because it all gets clumped into one massive figure.

Why are they so different? I've accounted for pending transactions, but there's still a difference. I've gone through every transaction and compared them for the last three months. I still can't make them balance. What's going on? What am I missing? Buckets always says I have more than I do.

I accidentally deleted my Uber/Taxi bucket! I re-created it, but now my transactions aren't matching and it says I have a self-debt of $618.50. Anyone know how I'd go about fixing this?

There's also the issue of this:

I dunno know if that's also why I'm at $618.50 self debt.

I've been using YNAB 4 since roughly 2016, but I'm always on the lookout for a replacement since the desktop version is obviously not supported anymore. I stumbled on Budget with Buckets the other day and was excited to give it a try. Importing from YNAB took quite a while, but in the end has seemed to work well. I needed to make some adjustments to some of my buckets, but now that this is done, the two are exactly alike.

So now that this is done, I've ended up with a few questions:

  1. How is monthly account reconciliation done? In YNAB I would always sit down with the bank statement and check off each transaction, ultimately balancing the statement and YNAB. When I was done, there was a green lock icon beside all transactions that were reconciled, and I had the peace of mind knowing that my account was in sync with the bank.
  2. Is it possible to view all transaction for an account on one page? It seems that I am limited to viewing only a particular month's transactions, whereas in YNAB I could set the view to current month, last 3 months, last year, etc, but typically left it set to show all dates.
  3. Is there no payee database? I have always entered transactions manually. From what I can tell, when I enter a transaction, there is no auto-complete or dropdown for payees, just simply a "memo" field where I need to type the payee name. I need to type out the payee name completely every time. In YNAB, the payee field would narrow as I started typing the name, and then I could click the payee I wanted, or use the dropdown box to select from the list. I realize that bank importing would negate this concern.
  4. Is there no place other than in the memo field to enter a check number? I probably rely on YNAB too much to be my electronic check register, but I miss the ability to sort by check number or at least be able to quickly view this info.

I'll probably have more questions as I go along, but these are the 4 that came to mind after a few hours of experimenting with Budgets.

Thanks!

Hey there, hoping someone can provide more insight to me on this.

All my SimpleFIN synced transactions from my main bank appear as positive (income), as opposed to when they are truly outflows, e.g. spending money at the grocery store. Upon resync this always reverts, so I can't manually classify this in a permanent way. In another bank account the signs allocate correctly, just my main bank with another company, they don't. Maybe this is bank specific, but has anyone else had this issue attributing the correct signage from a bank (N26) or European banks at large?

It always defaults back to its original small size. I use Windows 11 by the way.

It seems like rain equates to your amount left to budget (or put in buckets).

I have put all of my expected income into buckets, and my income amount matches exactly my 'In' amount for my buckets. Why then do I have leftover rain?

Is there a way to analyze spending per category and bucket? I would like to see a pie chart of my monthly expenses for example, for the life of me I cant seem to find it. Examples:

  • I'm trying to spend less on eating out and your like to know my month to month progress in a visual way
  • I want to know how much the groceries bag has increased month to month and year to year and what percentage of my income it represents

Thanks in advance! Great job with the app, this is the only thing I'm missing :)

Is anyone else facing errors trying to sync using the SimpleFIN bridge? Since last night, I am getting a red "Unexpected sync error" message. In the logs, it shows there appears to be an expired certificate, I'm assuming on the bridge API's server. I can login to the bridge and even tried creating a new access token, which works in SimpleFIN but also errors out when trying to claim the token.

I did report the bug through the Buckets UI. I'll just wait and keep checking. Surely the certificate will get renewed in due time. I just didn't see it mentioned anywhere (like this reddit), so figured I would ask in case I'm somehow the only one...

Hi, Is there a way to remove decimal zeros without converting these zeros to integers, The way this work currently is that the number after the decimal point is transformed into an integer so is really frustrating

Thx
