Hi all! I finally booked my flight so it's gonna happen: starting in Cancun end of january, and I have about 2 months of travelling ahead. My aim is to reach Costa Rica or Panama, but I also want to see some stuff and stop for hiking / diving once in a while, so might end up earlier the bike touring part and take the bus to make it to the flight..(i have no return ticket yet). So my questions to you are:

  • anybody interested in joining me for part (or all) the trip?

  • tips for area second hand bike & gear in cancun area?

  • which kind of bike should i go for (fast enough, sturdy, but also good for the crappy / mud roads in CA)?

  • where can i find good routes (gpx perhaps) for that part of the world?

  • which navigator should i use (long battery, visible in sunlight, works without internet etc)?

  • i read camping is really unsafe; what should i take for " emergency sleeping" in case i can't make it to my accomodation? hammock, sleeping bag, or should i still have a tent?

  • if i need to bike alone, how unsafe is it really?

  • what stuff to take which can be used for self-defense / against animals such as dogs etc?

  • tips for the best toolbox, lock and possibly solar panels which can be attached on the panniers?

I have been cycling for 3 years now but i'm a newbie in touring: did only 10 days in Norway as my only bike trip hence all these questions. Sorry for the long post but feel free to comment to only one from this loooong list. Thanks!!!

I'm 5'5'' and I'm thinking about changing bikes. I know the standard recommendations for height (https://surlybikes.com/uploads/downloads/15924_SUR_Bike_Sizing_Chart_OL_VF.pdf) but I"m wondering what other peoples experience is. I've ridden bikes made for taller people on day rides etc, but never for a 1000 miles. It's a lot easier to find used options around the 56cm/58cm than 54cm/52cm and below.

Hey! I'm looking at different trailers for my son(who will be 3 by the time we start) for trip from Hanoi to Warsaw. I read that the burly bee is really excellent although you can't recline it if they want a nap. However most stories talk about commuting short distances and am wondering if it would be practical for a long distance ride over the course of many months. We'd also have a baby bike seat so he'd be able to change from time to time.

Also does anyone know if its possible to change the tires on the burly bee for a thicker ones to make the ride smoother?

I've been rocking the Vaude Kelby for a few years now. Bought them in Germany to start my Euro tour and have done very well for some 20,000km. Now they're getting holes and just wearing out. Would definitely buy them again and highly recommend them, but getting hard to find. Also, really curious what everyone else is wearing. I definitely want to continue using recessed SPD clips (like my Vaudes) thanks for your suggestions!

I 10 days off work in January and was thinking of doing some touring in the south east.

Was thinking about riding from Savannah to Miami. Has anyone here done this route? Also, open to suggestions on other trips, looking for a trip for about a week of riding 70ish miles per day, and relatively warm.

thanks

Crankset for bicycle touring?

my question is what would you do for gearing for bicycle touring?

When I got my Surly LHT 26in 52cm 2008 on 11-2008. and My Surly LHT Crankset was the

Sugino 9 Speed 170mm 26-36-48t 74/110mm Crankset with Shimano UN54 110mm

JIS BB Set. and I removed the Sugino Crankset for the Dimension/Andel RSC6 110mm Crank Arm Set, 110/74MM BCD,170mm Black same crankset that is on the new Surly LHT/DT.

and Chain Rings that I used was Raceface 9-Speed Team Chainring Set, 110/74mm BCD 24-34-46 Black and in 2015 I seen the Racerace Team 9-speed no longer sold at online bike shops. and Then is when I ordered the Shimano Deore Crankset 64/104mm bcd 24-32-42t and I replaced Shimano Chain Rings for the Race Face Turbine 10/9 Speed Chainrings 24-32-42t and I replaced the 24t granny gear for 22t Raceface. and I am really happy with 22-32-42t for Bicycle Touring on my Surly LHT 26in 52cm 2008 Touring Bicycle. and I have saved the Shimano 10/9 speed Chain Rings. and I see the Raceface Turbine has the Raceface Turbine 9/10 speed 22-32-42t Chain Ring Set for Sale. and 1 day I will upgrade to 3X10 Have parts. and I don't like the Crankset wars to Shimano is doing! and I might go back Dimension/Andel RSC6 110mm Crank Arm Set, 110/74MM BCD,170mm Black and Dimension/Andel 110/74mm BCD 24-34-46 Black and Shimano UN55 BB Set 68MM X 118mm? and I sold my old Crankset and BB Set and BB Tools

I am 53yrs now and I can stock up on 9 Speed Chain Rings from Raceface Turbine 22-32-42t 9/10 speed X 2 Sets

Note I was thinking about the Shimano Sora R3030 9-Speed 110/74mm bcd 170mm Crankset with my Hope BB Set and Chain Rings 24-34-46t 110/74mm bcd

Thanks Tim

Hey, just about to heaf over to Dubrovnik to do the Ciro Trail then cycle south into Albania. Anyone have any experience on the Ciro Trail yet?

Looking for side trip reccomendations, where did you camp? Will I have trouble finding open campsites in November?(I assume I will)... Is wild camping safe? I ask as I know hiking there can be dangerous due to UEO and mines?

Im a wild camper at heart and its part of why I love touring so some guidence would be greatly appreciated!!

As the title says, for those who have gone on paid guided tours in a different region or country, what are some of the things that made the tour exceptional and/or stand out. Similarly, what are some of the things that made you regret the tour, or made it less of a positive experience for you?

Hi so, I am going on holiday with someone in Venice next year and I have always wanted to try touring! So I thought, why not go there for a week before and tour a little.

Has anyone been near Venice for touring? I was looking at starting at Florence but not sure if thats too much? But also, I don't know that I will be able to get my touring bike in time so was thinking I might just buy a bike there and then take it home after instead(of cycle to work scheme UK).

Is there anywhere to get a touring bike in Florence or anywhere near Venice thats good?

Basically, can I cycle from Florence to Venice or anywhere near Venice to Venice in a week and get a bike to do it too while there?

Me and my friend are about to start our trip later this week. We are both nervous- what are some tips for the whole experience? What is your favorite part of bike touring ?!
