I work for the government in my country, so I have a better work-life balance but lower pay than the private sector. One thing that boggles my mind is how many consultants we hire for even the smallest tasks with mediocre results. We hired a tech consultant for two jobs and paid him triple my hourly salary. I ended up spending more hours fixing the guy's stuff than if I had done the whole thing myself. I spoke with my supervisor about it, and he said it's too time-consuming to change the consultant, given the time it takes for HR to approve one.

However, I recently lost my mind during the latest project. My supervisor asked me to do the background work and give him the estimated hours and how long it would take to code a few features. I had done the exact project at my previous place and very generously told him about 30 hours. The boss said great and contacted the consultants. He came back saying it would take him more than 800 hours and requested around $75,000 for the whole thing. My boss actually considered saying yes, even though I kept telling him to pay me overtime for 30 hours ($1,800 instead), but HR said absolutely not. When I ranted to my friends from the industry, they said it's pretty common.

I understand hiring consultants for areas the company has no experts in, but workplaces would rather lose money than pay their own workers well. My boss kept telling me to get out and be a contractor instead for better pay, but I thought, what's the point of hiring employees then?!

Every time some bootlicker says that the bottom classes shouldn’t get to have living wages and should have to “find a better job” if they don’t like how the low level jobs treat them

They’re essentially saying that they know exploitation is rampant but that the dirty poors should keep smiling and providing great service anyway so that THEY can live in more comfort

The poor are always told “you get what you pay for” or “if you can’t afford it too bad”

If the business can’t afford quality labor then they should not get it

I’m aware the use high populations to keep leverage. That’s why they just got rid of abortion.

Prices for hotels and flights went up at the drop of a hat, and I guarantee you the workers will not be bringing home anything extra in their paycheck. They'll recieve a lousy pizza party and a $10 gift card to Amazon.

I know this stuff goes up and down all the time. I just figured I'd remind folks that the McDonald's worker in California isn't the greedy one.

What should I do? They apparently posted three days ago looking to hire for my position at $20-$28 an hour when they hired me at $14-$18 an hour. There’s only six desks in this room and all of them are full. Someone is either getting fired or promoted. What do y’all think?

I see people complaining about things such as:

  • lunch breaks becoming shorter
  • working more hours without break
  • no bonuses
  • no salary increases
  • limited bathroom breaks

Guys, this is a result of greed. Companies are obsessed with constant increase in revenue and reduction of cost and it's become clear to me that they will go as far as they can to achieve their goals. So much so that they will look for any kind of place to optimize, even if it takes away from basic human needs.

Look at examples such as Amazon that does even allow their workers to take a proper toilet break and they end up having to pee in bottles.

My mom works 15-16 hours per day as a cook in a restaurant back in my home country and gets paid minimum wage. She was allowed to use the restaurant's coffee beans and sugar to make a coffee cup until some smartass came up with an idea of making the staff pay for the coffee beans and sugar they use to reduce operational costs. They also were allowed to have 2-3 bottled waters from the fridge for free during the summer but now they have to bring their own bottle and use tap water only which is warm during the summer (she works in the kitchen and it is hot like an oven in the summer in there). They have even started monitoring that they do not eat food during the working hours.

The same businesses complain that no one wants to work even though they offer an amazing work environment.

Greed to this degree should be considered of the worst of crimes.

Applying for jobs again today and I just came across this question again "Why are you excited about this job opportunity?" And I would just like to say: F*ck that question.

Why am I excited about this job opportunity?

Well, first of all, let's tone it down a peg. I am not "excited" about it, ok? I'm sitting behind my computer screen scrolling through job listings and applying to anything half-decent that might fit my skills and experience. I was not sitting here, daydreaming about this job. I did not just yell loudily and happily and set off fireworks when I saw your job posting. This isn't an application for a birthday party, it's a freaking job application.

But, secondly, why do I want this job? I want this job because not starving to death is, usually, at least mildly preferable to starving to death.

You are a company. You have money. I am a worker. I need money. See how that works? There's kind of a dynamic here.

But the most important reason why this question pisses me off is because... it's ALL. THEATRE.

If you write down how excited you are about this new chance to deepen your skills, and grow as a person, and work with a team of exciting new people to make a difference in the world through designing f*cking ice cream cone shapes, you know you're lying.

And if they're not idiots, they know you're lying.

Everyone involved knows you're f*cking lying. So why have these questions?

I swear to god, this stuff makes me blow a gasket.

I had to let one of my managers go for multiple sexual harassment complaints. Then the assistant manager quit because “We have a right to privacy and that bitch was eavesdropping.” It should be noted they were in a break room, not even the break room they normally use.

Then, when I put new team members on the crew that crew immediately started harassing the female team member. It all culminated in another employee being fired when they found out the other new team member is bisexual and had a loud rant in the middle of the shop.

And to make it even worse, the rest of the crew is threatening to strike (they are anti union and part of the reason we don’t have a union at our company) because they say we are infringing their right to their political beliefs as republicans (which isn’t a protected class like sexual orientation is in my state).

So basically I have to replace an entire team (2 managers and 8 team members) be they are so convinced that they can discriminate against whoever they want and be protected because those views are political views.

How is the Republican Party not made entirely of unemployed people? The basis of their political views is to discriminate against protected classes. The craziest part is that some of these people are eligible for 3-6 months pay for a severance but they lose that if they quit without notice. So if they get fired for no-call no-show then they lose all of that.
