After more than 20 years off the air, Sailor Moon will return to Cartoon Network under Adult Swim.

Adult Swim is launching a new Friday block of programming called Toonami Rewind this month, per an announcement on their Facebook page. The two-hour block will feature classic shōnen anime shows, including Dragon Ball Z Kai and Naruto.

However, the real highlight of the announcement is the grand return of Sailor Moon and, for the first time, being aired uncensored with its new English dub from Viz Media.

As explained by Popverse, the original English dub of Sailor Moon, which was produced by the now-defunct DiC Entertainment and then Cloverway for later seasons, was heavily censored and edited objectionable content to be more suitable for children back when it aired on Cartoon Network’s original Toonami after-school programming block between 1998 to 2002.

Sailor Moon’s original English dub altered character names, removed cultural Japanese references, and cut entire episodes. The 90’s dub also altered LGBTQ+ storylines with Sailor Neptune and Uranus, originally written as lovers, to be depicted as cousins.

Adult Swim is "going back in time" as it is set to launch a new Toonami Rewind block on May 31, 2024, that will feature such classic anime as Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z Kai, and Naruto.

Toonami shared the news on Facebook with a video and the schedule of when fans can expect to enjoy this new programming.

"We are happy to announce that every Friday, starting May 31st, Toonami is going back in time," Toonami wrote. "Say hello to Toonami Rewind, Friday 5-7p on Adult Swim."

The VIZ English Dub version of Sailor Moon will kick off Toonami Rewind at 5pm and it will be followed by two episodes of Dragon Ball Z Kai from 5:30pm - 6:30pm. Naruto will then close things out at 6:30pm.

While the tweet has since been deleted, Anime News Network reported that Toonami co-creator Jason DeMarco confirmed that Rewind is really leaning into the nostalgic vibes as it will also feature "classic older Toonami music and some older packaging."

Ninja Kamui is a new weekly anime on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim programming block. As per MyAnimeList, Ninja Kamui has already surpassed the ratings of Demon Slayer. And seeing its speed, it would be safe to assume that the coming weeks might show the series at the top position on the chart, surpassing the other popular titles, including Attack on Titan and Jujutsu Kaisen.

It’s already jumped ahead of Attack on Titan on IMDb’s list of the most popular TV shows right now, placed at 81st ahead of the former at 85th.

Ninja Kamui premiered on February 11, 2024. The anime will run for 12 episodes, but fans are already curious to know if the series will return with a second season. Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1’s director Sunghoo Park is involved in the project, and it’s set to be one of the biggest animes of 2024.

Ninja Kamui doesn’t waste any time getting from zero to 100. Within five minutes of its first episode, a bespectacled salaryman is ambushed by a flurry of projectile needles and attacks thrown by a dozen or so armored assailants, bobbing and weaving with uncanny precision as he counters each of their strikes before being viciously beheaded by a sneering brute with dreadlocks. It’s a strong first impression for the first original series from director Sunghoo Park following his work on Jujutsu Kaisen, one that boldly spells out Ninja Kamui’s declaration of intent with bloody and balletic finesse. In an anime season packed with strong premieres, Ninja Kamui positions itself as an action anime worth keeping an eye on.

Adult Swim's official adaptation of Junji Ito's Uzumaki has arguably been their most promising project to date, yet fans have been left wondering what happened to it after numerous delays. Uzumaki is widely regarded by fans as Junji Ito's magnum opus for its hauntingly beautiful artwork and ambitiously creepy storytelling. Adult Swim announced an official animated adaptation of the story that would be faithful to Ito's story and artistic style. However, years have passed with no word on when it will finally be released.

As of 2024, Uzumaki has been indefinitely delayed with no official release date. This disappointing, yet understandable, news officially broke in 2022 when the official social media for the anime announced that Uzumaki was being delayed again for a good reason: to mirror the quality of the manga it's based on. There have been occasional glimpses at the process of creating the show made over the past two years, with the most recent update coming in the form of completed animation on Adult Swim's YouTube channel to tide fans over.

Ninja Kamui premieres February 10th @ midnight on Toonami on Adult Swim.

Adult Swim shared a new trailer for Ninja Kamui, the new anime series from Jujutsu Kaisen director Sunghoo Park, on Saturday. The original series follows Joe Higan, a former ninja who is nearly killed by his clan after fleeing to rural America with his family. Surviving the attempt on his life, Joe re-dons his identity as “Ninja Kamui” to embark on a campaign to avenge his family. Basically, it looks like John Wick but with ninjas instead of hitmen, and it looks killer.

The trailer is impressive, with fast-paced sword fighting juxtaposed with explosive action and generous geysers of gushing blood. Ninja Kamui is the first original production from E&H production, the anime studio Park founded in 2021 during the production of Jujutsu Kaisen season 1 and Jujutsu Kaisen 0. The series features original character designs by Takashi Okazaki, the artist and writer behind Afro Samurai.

In 2022 Park left MAPPA, the anime studio behind Jujutsu Kaisen, to work at E&H production full-time. Following Park’s departure, Jujutsu Kaisen’s second season was directed by Shōta Goshozono, who previously worked as an episode director on Ranking of Kings and Chainsaw Man.

Ninja Kamui will premiere Feb. 10 on Adult Swim’s Toonami programming block, who will air both the English dubbed and subbed version of the first episode at 12 a.m. and 3 a.m EST respectively. The series will stream on Max the following day, with new episodes scheduled to release there following their debut on Adult Swim.
