If I understood the joke (not familiar with the acronyms), it's about gas-based equipment breaking down more easily?

Gas based equipment won't break if you turn it off but liquid (HPLC) based equipment doesn't take kindly to drying out or salting up. It really depends on what mobile phases you're using.

Perhaps, though in IT servers often only break/die finally when you turn them off or restart them
