A 13-Year-Old With #Autism Got Arrested After His Backpack Sparked Fear. Only His Stuffed Bunny Was Inside.

#Disability rights advocates said #kids like Ty should not be getting arrested under Tennessee’s #school threats law. And they tried to push for a broader exception for kids with other kinds of disabilities. It didn’t work.

Not the smartest choice of words, but come on, he's 13, don't expect him to choose his words carefully - autism or not.

And don't arrest people over a misunderstanding, "blow up" IS used in a figurative sense, so there was never a threat in the first place.

@[email protected] I liked the article, however I would like to suggest against using person-first language, especially towards autistic people. It is widely thought to be stigmatizing in the neurodiversity movement. Same goes with the narration that disability limits an individual per se, and not that it is a complex interaction between an individual and their environment. I provide some thoughtful texts to digest:

@[email protected] That's a rather a misleading headline. He told a teacher "the whole school will blow up" if anyone looked in his backpack. His words sparked fear, not his bag.

The charges against him were dismissed and he ended up with a few days of suspension.
