Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must begin with TIL. Linking to a source of info is optional, but highly recommended as it helps to spark discussion.

** Posts must be about an actual fact that you have learned, but it doesn't matter if you learned it today. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.**

Rule 2- Your post subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your post subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding non-TIL posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-TIL posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

For further explanation, clarification and feedback about this rule, you may follow this link.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

I was feeling an itch to quantify this list and look at the impact of recent elections as well. Here’s the tallies as I found them from the source-

USA- 58 interventions, 3 since 2000

Soviet Union/Russia- 38 interventions, 9 since 2000

China- 20 interventions, 18 since 2000

Saudi Arabia- 4 interventions, 3 since 2000

Iran- 4 interventions, 3 since 2000

Israel- 3 interventions, all post-2000

India- 3 interventions, 2 since 2000

France- 3 interventions, 2 since 2000

There’s a smattering of others with 1-3 interventions but these were the main ones.

The US' glory days are clearly in the past 😔

the US switched to sanctions and is now sanctioning like 30% of the world. For instance, afaik, the trump sanctions on venezuela started the current uptick of venezuelan refugees

The refugees as you call them have been steady since 2013, way before the sanctions to 7 specific individuals, but just in time for socialism to fail due to lack of money

Saudi Arabia- 4 interventions, 3 since 2000

This feels like an undercount.

Israel- 3 interventions, all post-2000

This feels like an enormous undercount.

I think it's unfair to the hard working people of the Kremlin to exclude any election featuring Geert Wilders, Nigel Farage, or Marine Le Pen from this list.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

Feel free to add it to the list. It's Wikipedia.

This list is very incomplete. I'm noticing American coups in at least Pakistan with Imran Khan and 2020 Venezuela are missing. Also Afghanistan doesn't exist on that list?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

Cool, you should add those in and find some sources. It's Wikipedia

There was no coup in Venezuela in 2020.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Gideon_(2020)

Operation Gideon (Spanish: Operación Gedeón) was an unsuccessful attempt by the Active Coalition of the Venezuelan International Reserve, Venezuelan dissidents, and a private security firm, Jordan Goudreau's Silvercorp USA, to infiltrate Venezuela by sea and remove Nicolás Maduro from power.

The US administration of Donald Trump pressured for the exit of Maduro,[18] charged him with narcoterrorism, and put a US$15 million reward for information leading to his capture and arrest. [19][20] Yet throughout 2019, the Maduro administration maintained control of Venezuela's military agencies and key governmental institutions.[21] Maduro enjoyed the support of the higher ranks of the military, but less so among the middle and lower ranks.[14][15]

Right because that's how you stage a coup, with like, 3 people against a full country. Yep , checks out

Moving my goalpost from

  • The coup attempt didn't happen

to

  • The coup attempt doesn't count because it was so badly executed

It should be noted that the US attempted to indict Maduro on nacro-trafficking charges that same year, offering a $15M reward for his arrest and extradition. This was the underlying motivation for the Silver Corps bungled mission.

This was also two years after a drone attack was launched against a site hosting Maduro during a speech.

But please, lets all pretend the US doesn't have an explicit policy of regime change aimed at the current President of Venezuela. Or, for that matter, the national leadership of Bolivia, Cuba, and Nicaragua.
