I read Dune and Dune Messiah but couldn't force myself past the first couple of chapters of the third book. Dune is a masterpiece and Dune Messiah is pretty good. I just couldn't get into Children of Dune.

I understand Children is not the strongest. That said I think of God Emperor as the best book in the series as it is a great counter point to Dune and finalises the deconstruction of the lone saviour mythology.
I don’t mind the way that Brian went too much. Do I think it’s a little too simple? Yes, since it ignores the deeper reasoning behind the Butlerian Jihad but overall the inkling of the ending fits with some hints in God Emperor.
I don’t begrudge those who hate it either since the writers just aren’t Herbert.
Of course sometimes you get an author who can do a great job finishing a series like Sanderson did with the Wheel of Time but in that case Jordan’s widow was also there to shepherd along the process.
For all we know what they wrote is what Herbert was thinking and overall I don’t think it would be a waste of time reading it.
Thanks for the reply. How would you rank the two Brian Herbert books with the original six?
Hmm…. About a 7/10. It’s been years since I read it and I did read a lot of the prequel books so their writing style got much better by the time they tackled it.
Thanks for the reply. I’ll strongly consider reading the two books that finish the series.
I think…. Yeah just the first 4 .. after that, meh.
I have a personal problem with KJA. So I’m just not going to read any of the new ones.
The first 4 are brilliant and I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve read them.
