I don't trust any of these players, especially Adobe, who has always been king of the proprietary shitlords. If they are forming this "committee" or "alliance," why aren't there any open source players appointed?

"The Linux Foundation’s JDF was chosen to house the project, as it will enable open, efficient, and effective development of OpenUSD specifications, while providing a path to recognition through the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)."
But ya, where's Blender?
This is what I was thinking, where’s Blender? Nowadays is the most known 3D modelling Software. Of course it’s Adobe’s fault again, they have Substance suite
If there's one thing Nvidia is known for, it's embracing open standards.
Or Disney. Or Adobe. Or Autodesk. Or even Apple.
This is like a gang of thieves letting the public know they're planning to open a bank.
I think the only credit these companies deserve when it comes to creating open standards is that their business models were predatory enough to inspire many developers to create FOSS alternatives to their highly proprietary offerings.
None of those companies are very known for being "open" about anything.
I thought they were trying to start a new fiat crypto called OpenUSD lol i was like what a weird combo of companies of monetary policy
The only thing that’s supposed the be open about this shit is my wallet probably. Fuck that.
as someone who works in that area, USD will be pretty awesome once it is well integrated in the respective 3D applications. Through MaterialX it'll even be possible to export complex shaders through different applications. It'll be much easier to use different programs on a single project.
Nvidia already pushes USD with their Omniverse thing. Whoever doesn't join the new standards shoots themself in the foot. I believe Autodesk is seriously threatened by Blender (Adobe, Nvidia and Apple have invested in Blender already), and if they don't implement the standards that studios demand they'll just remain on the losing side.
To be fair, Maya’s support for USD blows Blender’s out of the water. It’s natural that Autodesk is in this, they’ve been supporting USD greatly for years. It is Blender that is a bit behind on USD/Hydra/Material X (but there is hope for the future).
yeah, sadly. There is a lot of interest, and I guess the Blender Devs have a hard time managing it all of the contributions. they are actually hiring someone who can help out with all of that stuff
AOUSD is a terrible acronym. Why not AFOUSD or OUSDA? No matter what, though, it’s an acronym that includes another acronym, which is gross.
Open... What? Open wallets?
