Forgive my ignorance, what makes a burger 'smash'?

It's the method for cooking the meat patty. A flat tool is used to press the meat thin, and the result tends to be crispy

There is also a literal restaurant called smash burger

This method is great for making burgers at home. Because the patties are thin, you don't need a high-powered stove, the cooking time is short, and you don't make a lot of smoke.
