Piracy started as the practice of stealing cargo from others to self-benefit and re-selling, particularly at sea. They didn't copy stuff and tried to pass it like original. Pirates didn't for example make a replica of a sarcophagus and pass it by real, they stealed the real thing, and whoever buy from them was getting the real deal, albeit from a different seller (there was no counterfit on og piracy).

Original Title: These people are relating piracy to "real-life monsters" and "many of whom engage in . . . Prostitution, drug trafficking..." Etc. This sounds like the type of rhetoric back in the Salem witch trials by making out your enemy as a devilike character.

I used to pirate a lot of games until a few years back when I started having the means to afford them. Now there are some games that I loved so much back then that I would like to actually buy again to support the devs and for the sake of owning them on my Steam account and getting achievements.

My problem is, as I've already experienced with Remnant: From the Ashes (which I had played the CODEX version of), once i bought and booted up the game through Steam, every single achievement in the game popped up at once and I received all my unlocks from the pirated version. This would probably be ideal for most people but I was revelling in the challenge of starting over and unlocking every milestone and achievement from scratch. I could still delete my character and start over but the Steam achievements couldn't lock themselves back and the game's rewards are account-wide.

I know the answer will probably vary from game to game/ pirated version, but is there a geneal way for me to, in the future, prevent my progress from automatically carrying over from pirated to legit whenever I decide to buy any other game I've already played?

I live in a country where piracy (only downloading) is legal (Switzerland) and altough this sounds like smooth sailing, I feel like there could still be issues.

I read that we are on a watchlist by the USA so that is the main reason for my concern.

Like, should I still use a VPN to a diffrent legal country?

Could I be flagged and have problems traveling to countries like the US?

(Non-computer person friendly)

Tried to open a picture I took off my iPhone (obviously I have it set to .heic for higher quality recording), and wouldn't you know, Windows wants me to install a plugin for $0.99. Wtf?

So, here's how I got past Microsoft's debauchery:

  • First, I went to store.rg-adguard.net
  • Second, I found the ProductID online to input into the link template (the link you would need to copy into the search bar on the aforementioned website is ) (with 9n4wgh0z6vhq being the ProductID)
  • I'm just a normal person, so I have no idea what the first listed file is (the 10KB " Microsoft.HEVCVideoExtension_2.1.861.0_neutral_~_8wekyb3d8bbwe.BlockMap" file)
  • So, I downloaded the ".appxbundle" file as I've done before with this website
  • And, after opening my .heic file again, voila! it worked perfectly fine, opens as any other image would

This is a one-time process.

If you for some reason hate convenience, there are plenty of free online converters, or you can just rename the .heic to .jpg (though I'm not sure if this is has any negative side effects for the picture).

Hope this helps anyone trying to solve (what should, in a perfect world) be a non-issue. :)

Will a Pi-hole block the ads that Disney+ is showing?

There are six 1:30 minute ads in a single hour long episode.

This is bullshit. Fucking cable all over again.

I am doing a bit of spring cleaning on my hard drives. As it turns out, I have accumulated terabytes of downloaded movies, TV series, etc throughout the years. Some are treasured rarities, and some are not. Anyway.

I initially planned to organize it in just two folders: "Film" and "TV Series". But then I also created a subfolder in the Film folder for "Documentaries". And another for "Art film". And another for "Animated". Etc. And once again, it's all over the place. I do prefer systematics. Relative simplicity.

I could use some inspiration for folder structure. So, how do you organize your collection of pirated treasures?
