I’ve noticed a need in the market, and I’d like to develop an app to fill it.

Essentially an app that functions as a crypto wallet/marketplace for other legal items, as well as a payment system for purchasing crypto with cash by using barcodes generated in the app using an already existing payment processor. No kyc, no id, no fiat stored in the app, zero chargebacks. Basically an easy way to buy/spend crypto legally without kyc.

All this functionality already exists, just needs to be put together. Cakewallet+vanilladirect barcodes+craigslist

Say i want to buy 3 xmr to purchase something listed on the marketplace. I would generate an xmr wallet in the app, then press a buy button. I’d select 3 xmr, the app would show me a price, I’d press “accept and generate barcode”. Then i could take that barcode to a partner of the payment processor (walmart/Walgreens/7-11 etc), take it to customer service, they scan it and accept the cash, the payment is verified by our processor, and 3 xmr is released to the customers wallet (minus fees).

Then the customer can use that 3 xmr to buy the item they want, also in the app.

Supporting additional cryptocurrencies would be ideal.

People are already doing things like this with other methods, but this would streamline the process and add functionality.

Anyone interested in working on this?

The Future of Zano and the CryptoNote Protocol w/ Andrey Sabelnikov aka Zoidberg PT1 (MT 306)

TODAY'S 🎙SHOW: In part one of this two part episode, Douglas Tuman interviews Andrey Sabelnikov (aka Zoidberg) who worked alongside cryptonote inventor Nicolas Van Saberhagen as the lead developer of the first implementation of the Cryptonote protocol and who went on to create Zano —which can most simply be categorized as a privacy coin version of Ethereum.

Andrey discusses the recent breakthrough enhancements Zano has implemented with its most recent hardfork, Zarcanum. They discuss many new concepts related to Monero and Zano including the concept of confidential assets and private proof-of-stake consensus, and the bold claim that Monero will one day become proof of stake. Andrey even mentions recent conversations with Nicolas Van Saberhagen regarding his take on proof of stake and Monero in general.

  • Write a tweet, post, blog, comment ... about Monero, how it's doing great and still avoiding Chainalysis or ASICs.
  • Turn on your computer and start mining.
  • Buy something from a store that accept XMR.
  • Ask your favorite store if they would like to accept XMR.
  • Stick a sticker on a pole, or tell a random person about XMR.

I just got a Keystone 3 Pro wallet to replace my Ledger Nano X, and it's so much nicer to use with a big colour touchscreen rather than a single line of text and two buttons. This will surely help to persuade people that securely holding crypto in a hardware wallet isn't too complicated for them.

However, it doesn't currently support Monero 😱 so I was wondering if anyone's working on that?

The firmware is open source but I guess they still have the final decision about whether to add Monero. I can't see any reason why they'd refuse though, when their competitors support it.

Supporting the network (lemmit.online)

When discussions come up here about supporting the network, people always say one or two things: run a node, and mine. This has always irked me a bit and I’ll explain why.

I believe that there are three main ways to support the network:

  1. Host a node
  2. Mine
  3. Use monero for everyday transactions

One and two are mentioned constantly in our community, but three, which I argue is the most important, is not talked about nearly enough.

Some points supporting why using monero for your purchases whenever you can is the best way to support the network:

  • monero is supposed to be a private CURRENCY. No amount of mining or hosting nodes will drive adoption of monero. Privacy is very important, but what is the point of a private currency if we aren’t actually using it? We should be focussing on increasing the flow of monero in the economy such that it becomes more like a currency and less like a speculative investment. This is already our greatest strong suit compared to other cryptos, but we are still nowhere close to fiat levels of currency flow
  • using monero secures the network from potential spam attacks. Some people here theorized that the spam attack might have been an attempt to break ring signatures. More natural transactions makes it such that less transactions are known to potential bad-actors.

So how do we go about increasing usage? -If you run a business of any kind, start accepting monero as a form of payment. -utilize some of the multiple services that allow purchasing items on amazon using monero. -selling something on craigslist? Accept monero as payment! -taking donations for a project/charity? Accept monero as payment! -get creative! I would love to hear all of your ideas about how we could use monero more an a daily basis.

If you disagree with me I would also love to hear why. Im always open to learning more.

I've just read the report of Rucknium on the recent suspected attack.

(*TLDR)

I can't avoid wondering

  1. who would do such a thing? Financial hackers? Western security agencies? Authoritarian regimes agencies? Private security contractors? Security researchers?

  2. which legal framework would various actors find themselves in for doing such a thing? While financial hackers and security contractors would probably be committing a crime if caught, would government agencies be allowed by their own laws to perform such an attack?

  3. which means/infrastructure are needed for such a thing (apart the few XMR fees). I guess some nodes, IP obfuscation tech, researchers and data analysis tools, what else?

  4. depending on the infrastructure used, what kind of fingerprinting analysis can be attempted to identify them?

(*TLDR):

  • XMR transactions at the start of March have largely increased.
  • An actor controlling this set of transactions could track most of what happens on Monero chain in the period.
  • This could have impacted the ring-signatures mechanisms effectively reducing ring-size and improving the probability of de-anonymization.

Hi guys, i personally love and use Monero for a long time, i'm a fan of privacy. Lately i see so many people having a tough time trying to cash out their profits due to concerns raised by banks and exchanges about the provenance of the funds. I just don't get it, it seems like banks are targeting crypto transactions nowadays. At the same time you're gonna buy some crypto through the biggest exchanges and then get flagged and lose access to your funds?! Stuff been crazy lol..

If people would start appreciating Monero as it should maybe it will also shoot in price lol. Peace

Why is this relevant to monero? Because time and time again, we (or at least I) hear that monero is not needed because "nobody cares that much about privacy". If NPR is reporting on it, and if google is facing legal consequences over it, I think it's safe to say that people actually do care about their privacy.

Background of this rating

This extensive list is a Monero community effort over the last 3 years.

Some of the insights may apply to other coins, others may not. Usually the top CEX have 1:1 backing of BTC, ETH and USDT* (other risks may apply) . Everything else may be bought as needed if requested for a withdrawal.

Be aware that some data points change over time. Also be aware that CEX that had never listed Monero like Coinbase (low risk), Bitstamp (low risk) or FTX (extremely high risk) didn't make the list.

USE CUSTODIAL CEX AKA "CRYPTOBANKS" WITH EXTREME CAUTION

Only day traders should use these third parties for their trading stack and ideally withdraw after closing a position. Newcomers should make themselves comfortable with hardware wallets before buying on a CEX and always and immediately withdraw, what they bought.

| Fractional reserve risk | Custodial CEX | XMR status (may apply to other coins) | |

USE NON-CUSTODIAL CEX AKA "INSTANT SWAP EXCHANGES" WITH CAUTION

Centralized instant swap exchanges which come with their own set of problems and risks can be a good way for many to route around CEX/CRYPTOBANKS.

Often those come with higher fees, shotgun KYC or are selective scams like "Changelly".

Most of them depend on external liquidity (or are fronts for CEX), which means they will halt or freeze the exchange process just as often as CEX (main culprits are ChangeNow and FixedFloat). In times of bigger market movements many of those sites will abandon trades that are not favorable for them.

You can use an aggregator like Trocador.app that has a security bond for transactions of up to $1000 and gives you a clear indication about competitive pricing and KYC risk.

| Instant exchange risk | Non-custodial CEX | status | |

|

|

| | Extremely high ⚠️ + Scam alert ❌ | Change**lly | selective scamming | | Extremely high ⚠️ + KYC risk ⚠️ | ChangeNow | liquidity problems with long holds on funds | | High ⚠️ + KYC risk ⚠️ | FixedFloat | liquidity problems | | High ⚠️ + KYC risk ⚠️ | Godex | liquidity problems | | High ⚠️ + KYC risk ⚠️ | StealthEx | | | High ⚠️ + KYC risk ⚠️ | Simpleswap | | | High ⚠️ | Swapuz | | | High ⚠️ | Swater | | | High ⚠️ | alfacash | | | High ⚠️ | Letsexchange | | | Medium | BitcoinVN | no known incidents, own liquidity pool | | Medium | Exch.cx | no known incidents, proof of reserves, own liquidity pool |

Satoshi taught us not to entrust our money with third parties.

Not your key, not your coins

Crypto is all about control over your own money. If you don't self-custody, it means you entrust your stack, in some cases your life savings, with a third party that may or may not have ulterior motives, may or may not be a scam or may or may not be controlled or extorted by a rogue government.

The process of learning to become self-sovereign might include some pain. But as crypto history shows us, keeping "your" coins in the hands of a custodian is a 100% guarantee to set yourself and the community up for failure.

If you are in it for the gain, be smart and do it on-chain.

What exchanges to use then?

There are plenty of better (more secure, private, trustless) however still more inconvenient solutions that are preferable over using KYC/CEX. Those often come at a higher price as security and privacy have a price, but not necessarily at a lower speed. Indeed starting from zero, signing-up for a cumbersome and intimidating KYC process will often take days or weeks sometimes placing holds on funds while a P2P market like LocalMonero will give you access to coins <1 hour and coming at the benefit of not giving up your right to privacy.

| Exchange method | Exchanges | Trust level | |

|

|

| | DEX | bisq, Haveno | ✅ escrow | | P2P | LocalMonero. AgoraDesk, Robosats, Zapit, Peach Bitcoin | ✅ escrow | | Atomic swaps | Samourai Wallet, UnstoppableSwap.net, AtomicMonero, BasciSwapDEX | ✅ trustless | | AMM (automatic market makers) | SeraiDEX, Maya, Thorchain, Uniswap | low for users / medium for liquidity providers (hacks) | | Mining (buy via electricity) | XMRrig, Monero GUI, Grupax | ✅ trustless | | Earning (buy via services and products) | any products or services | low - ⚠️ high (scams) |

What can you do?

If you are into cryptocurrencies for more than just some side gamble you really want to learn how to use the right tools to manage your money in a self-sovereign and self-custodial way. The more people learn about the risks involved and how to mitigate them the better for you and the health of the whole ecosystem.

Given the success of the previous MAAMs (see here), let's keep this rolling.

The principle is simple: ask anything you'd like to know about Monero, especially the dumb questions that you've been keeping for you every other days, may the community clarify it all!

Finally, credits to binaryFate for starting the concept!
