Hello,

I've been looking about houses around luxembourg recently and I found nice houses in Belgium for 220 000 - 350 000 eur, 30 kilometers away from Luxembourg's border. Same houses costs like 4x (1 million+) in Luxembourg.

I know it is known that Luxembourg is expensive but it still astonished me to see how cheap housing is around Luxembourg. You don't even need to go far. You can get some great deal.

For example someone working in Steinfort (west of Luxembourg, on the Belgium-Luxembourg's border) and living on a small village 15 minutes away from Luxembourg you can get house for 280 000 - 350 000. So great house without the traffic jam and spending time !

I pretty sure lot of people living in Belgium earning 45-55k have better living condition that most Luxembourg resident earning 80k.

This said I heard that Luxembourg native are buying in Belgium and making prices going up ! City around Messancy/Arlon/Athus seems crazy expensive.

I would be glad to hear about experience from this sub from people living in Belgium and working in Luxembourg. Are you happy about your situation? Do you feel well-off? How is the traffic?

Thank you and have a nice day.

Do you think that the number of cross*-border workers will keep increasing due to the housing crisis?

I go grocery shopping regularly in Aldi, Edeka, and Cactus Remich (as they all have products that the other doesn't). I live in Germany.

Somehow, the Cactus Remich is the only one where products often get moldy/expire way before the expiration date. It's always products that are packed, not fresh fruit. For instance a vacuum-sealed ham I bought turned green long before the due date which was 30 April! Or other products like cheeses or flammkuchen dough that gets moldy way before the date. All these products were immediately brought home and stored in the fridge.

If I had this problem with all my food I'd say that there is probably an issue with my fridge. But there isn't! Products from any other grocery store are doing fine, and in some cases are even edible after the due date.

Considering the staggering price difference compared to Cactus, it is a shame.

I grew up in Luxembourg, am Luxembourgish myself. But my parents don't come wealth since they were immigrants. I did well in school, became an engineer and can just barely afford something modest by carefully managing my finances. I understand that a large proportion of the population does not have the opportunities I had.

Friends around me are only affording stuff by being dual income in government or moved across the border. And this is just my friend circle of mostly smart guys from classique B/C section. I really wonder how everyone else is doing who did not even make it that far in school? Ofc education is not everything, but its generally correlated to finances.

If I am just getting by with my achievements by luck and hard work, what are the other Luxembourgers doing, who are not lucky or with the government? Don't you feel sca_mmed by our politicians and land owners?(who got rich in the process)

I am honeslty kind of sad and angry. Not for myself since i got lucky and am doing fine, but for my country and my fellow luxembourgers.

I do not believe in working for the government or the overbloated welfare company CFL just to earn more money than private. I believe in creating value to improve the world by hard work rather than disproportionally sucking out value from the economy just because of my passport.

I think the way our economy works by funneling money from less paid immigrants in the private sector to well paid luxembourgers in the public sector is actively discouraging any talented aspiring Luxembourger to really contribute to the private economy to their full potential. And I thinks thats not ok. Especially in the current housing market that disproportionally benefits luxembourgish owners who vote for the government that pays them in their gov job and also makes the rules for property ownership. Isn't this perverse?

Planning to apply to this renowned program in the next cohort, last I heard the below subjects were included, but I’m looking for the updated syllabus:

Profiling 101, Imaginary Laws and Regulations, Deposit’s Deductions Basics, Deposit’s Deductions Advanced, Impossible Clauses and Fine Print, Indexation (blink, blink), Ghosting.

🥲🤡 Any other worthwhile classes?
