Camping out along the way, meeting natives from wherever you bike to, just enjoying nature. I think this year I'm going to save up money and then just get on my bike and ride to somewhere I've never been. I don't care for society anymore. Jobs make me feel apathetic and I don't really give a single shit about money. I just want to experience life, on a bicycle. That's all.

Hi Everyone - I host and produce Seek Travel Ride - a podcast which shares the stories and experiences of people undertaking amazing adventures on a bicycle. I've had the pleasure of being able to interview some amazing guests for the show and hear them talk about their travels. I recently interviewed Kari Loia who in 2015 cycled the TransAmerica Trail with his 75 year old father Merv.

This trip was one which Kari and Merv had dreamt of taking for decades. In fact it was in early 2001 when Kari first purchased the adventure cycling association maps to look into making it a reality. But as with many things, life got in the way and it wasn't until 2015 that they set off. By then Merv was 75 and also suffering from Alzheimers. As you can imagine, this added quite a layer of complexity to their journey. But Kari knew he had a limited time window to make this dream a reality for his father, before his state of decline with Alzheimers took over.

They left from Virginia and made their way to Oregon. They chose to travel East as they wanted to look forward to the spectacular scenery which lays west of the Rocky Mountains. This meant starting out in Apalachia country which was very testing - as were the dogs in Kentucky!

It took 73 days for them to make the complete journey - over 4400miles/7000+kms. Kari mentions that for each day of their tour his father couldn't recall which town they started from, or which town they finished in, but regardless of that - this journey was so enriching for Merv. He was totally in the moment and a particularly moving experience for Kari was seeing his father cycle up Hoosier Pass, with a grin from ear to ear, as he climbed up the road with snow banked up on either side of it.

The full interview with Kari is available now on Seek Travel Ride - which you can find on Apple and Spotify and all podcast players - or directly via

Original Title: Put together this YouTube tutorial on (IMHO) the safest & simplest way to fly with a touring bike, showing all the steps, tools and supplies involved. I've tried every method over the years and this is now my go-to for getting my bike on any airline with a compatible baggage policy. Hope it helps!

I hope this isn't as bad as it looks but the 2024 touring season thru Big Sur may have just crumbled with this section of roadway:

There's no easy fix here in that narrow ledge of land that remains. Very unclear how stable that one remaining lane is for even alternating traffic to use. Any sort of construction in this spot would demand full closure.

It is entirely possible to ride up or down the coast inland along Interstate 101 for that section (have done it south to north three times) but it's much less memorable and exhilerating... and comfortable.

Ride on brothers & sisters! This sad reality of our most glorious coast will never change. We must embrace the chaos once again.

Three months ago I wrote this post about this being such an inclusive community. I am still grateful for all the encouragement we received, and we just came back from our 240 km, 5-day pilot test of whether we like bicycle touring. We loved it! It was a great adventure. We found rain, mud, wind, and also sunshine. We slept in two different old olive mills turned into hostels. We went through different landscapes. We saw an old aqueduct, many long abandoned train stations, some old train stations now turned into hostels or restaurants, we crossed tunnels (the longest of which is 2.3 km) and bridges, and we met some fellow cyclists along the way. We are now thinking about what our next bicycle adventure could be. Thank you again!

Europe seems to have endless posiblities and when I'm on a longer tour I prioritise paved over gravel, so I was wondering if there's a site that has a selection of cool paved routes on offer? I was thinking Eurovelo but I feel like a lot of the routes don't go through areas I want to see or just follow rivers the whole way etc.

Thanks!

In 2022 my dad and I biked across America 4,216 miles in just under 3 months. Our plan was to not have much of a plan. I've thru hiked the Appalachian Trail and the Te Araroa in New Zealand and there is no feeling like the solitude and day to day life of waking up and not knowing where you will end up or what you will see that day. Neither of us had any experience bike touring before but my dad had double knee replacement a few years back and still has a difficult time walking. This ruled out his dream of thru hiking the Appalachian Trail so the next best solution was to hop on some bikes and make up a route as we go. We didn't plan much of a route before we left, we would just look at Google maps at the end of the night and roughly come up with a plan on the fly. We don't have much experience with filming and video editing but I think we captured the essence of a beautiful journey and amazing memories. My family laughs that my dad still watches these videos regularly after almost 2 years. I gotta admit I also watch them quit frequently as well reliving the wonderful memories we shared together. I hope you enjoy riding along with us on our journey.
