I have an HP all-in-one running Ubuntu. My problem is that the audio from the speakers doesn't work unless I connect headphones, which means the speakers work normally and you can hear through the headphones at the same time. It should be noted that this didn't happen to me with Windows

I am currently interviewing with them. The first stage was writing a very long essay answering to their questions. I found that part very clarifying and had no issue answering everything. I understand that they do not want to invest their time interviewing someone if he or she does not seem to be a good fit at this stage. They ask questions that may seem weird, like high school and university grades, but as a senior manager I understand that your behavior during those years can definitely be an indication of your actual behavior.

Then you get to the IQ test. This part I also understand because they want to make sure they are hiring smart people. The key to pass this test is to practice. It is important to answer fast and accurately, and the only way to do it is practicing. Google "Thomas GIA practice" and you will get tons of practice tests. Some are free, some are paid. I took my time (and money) to make sure I was well prepared for this test.

Then you get to the "early stage" interviews. Here is when I got very disappointed. Two out of three interviewers were very aggressive, trying to find "lies" in my cv, with zero empathy (one of the key skills to join Canonical is supposed to be empathy)... horrible. And these 2 individuals are supposed to be my peers. Both have a very different cultural background. So I guess it is Canonical's culture. I really don't see myself working with these types of colleagues.

Apparently I passed this stage and am scheduled to move forward with the late stage interviews (hiring manager, leadership and senior managers), but at this point, I have my doubts. The salary range is great, but I really need time to assess if this is the place where I want to be in the next 5 - 10 years.

I wrote this review to help anyone that thinks that a long recruitment process is negative. No no no. It is VERY positive for both sides because you get to know them better. At least this is my opinion. Not sure if I am going to continue, but so far, I am very disappointed with the people I met. Hope this helps.

Hi,

I am quite new to running a home server and have just set it up in the last couple months. I am a uni student who is just experimenting and noticed an issue with the power draw of the GPU in the system.

System Specs:

  • CPU: 3600x
  • GPU: RTX 2070
  • RAM: 32gb 3600mhz
  • Storage: 1tb NVME SSD, 250gb Sata SSD
  • OS: Ubuntu Server 24.04

When idling, the GPU is using 22W constantly. It is in P8 power state and has no processes running on it. I have tried multiple different things but cannot find a fix. See nvidia-smi output below

Hello, I have an HP ProBook 460 G11, 16-inch, with an i5 Ultra 125U processor. I’ve seen that it’s listed as a certified laptop on the official Ubuntu website, but I’ve tried installing it, and it just won’t work—it keeps failing. If I try the latest version of Ubuntu, the screen goes black before reaching the login screen. Has anyone managed to get Ubuntu working on this type of laptop?

I’ve seen on the Ubuntu website that in some regions it usually comes with a custom Ubuntu image. Is there any way to get it?

Thanks!

I didn't like the new look of the Ubuntu 24.04 todo app, which is called Endeavour now, so I wanted to delete it and install the version of Ubuntu 22.04, but I couldn't find it in the Ubuntu repo.

I downloaded the deb package from https://ubuntu.pkgs.org/22.04/ubuntu-main-arm64/gnome-todo_3.28.1-6ubuntu1_arm64.deb.html and tried to install it on Ubuntu 24.04. Every time, I got an error.

How can I do it in the right way?

Hello,

I’m trying to make an image from a buildroot repo on GitHub. I’m using Ubuntu 24.04.01 LTS on a pi5 with 8gb and a 128gb sd. There are a couple forks in the repo which offer different ways to make the image. Each way I’ve tried produces a different error. When I make using the buildroot clone I get a m4 error:

C-stack.c:55:26: error: missing binary operator before token “(“ 55 | #elif HAVE_LIBSIGSEGV && SIGSTKSZ < 16384

I’ve checked the version on desktop via terminal and I have 1.4.19 which I’ve read was supposed to patch this issue..

This is the repo

https://github.com/BastianGschrey/PowerTune.git

Does anyone know why I’m still getting the error? Is there something I need to change in the repo files? Sorry if this is an easy fix. I’m fairly new to Linux/Ubuntu.

I’ve also tried cloning this fork of the repo…

https://github.com/Arthris/PowerTune-Buildroot.git

I follow the instructions with the make file. When I do it this way I get this error:

qendian.h:331:54: error: incomplete type ‘std::numeric_limits’ used in nested name specifier

It also produces another error saying it’s not a template.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I made a persistent live boot USB of Ubuntu Server 24.04.01 using mkusb and I want to see all of the boot parameters that are available to me, but the documentation for the casper image doesn't seem to include everything. Even things like autoinstall, which does work for me when I include it as a boot parameter in grub, don't appear here. I'm not sure how to find other options.

I'd also like to find the installer options, but I can't find those either? Do these docs exists? Maybe I'm looking for the wrong thing. Any help/suggestions welcome.

I have a small form-factor computer system and I used an old mSATA SSD drive I pulled from a laptop with a case and USB wire for it that adapts/converts it to USB 3.0 drive. It's been a pain to move this thing around with the drive attached to it all the time, so I want to move the Ubuntu 22 installation running from it to a micro SD card I can leave in it (I have a SanDisk microSDXC UHS-I card) I can leave in it. The built in drive is small and I'm dual booting it with LibreElec. How do I clone the whole OS to the SD card (and make it bootable) without having to reinstall everything?

UPDATE: I used 'dd' to do this and it seemed to work since I'm using the card only now. However, the card is 64GB whereas the USB drive was 32GB, so there is about 32GB of unallocated free space on the card that I need to merge with the filesystem partition that's currently using about 14GB. I have time before it fills up but I'd like to extend this. GParted won't let me since it's the current OS mounted disk.

"The file system can not be resized while it is mounted read-only. Either unmount the file system or remount it read-write."

Any advice?

The command I used was:

sudo dd if=/dev/sdb of=/dev/sdc bs=4M

UPDATE2: I was able to extend the partition when I connected it to another machine I have and used GParted there. Moved the card back to the small computer and it has the rest of the space now.

I have ubuntu running smoothly on my internal NVME drive. I want to install ubuntu on ny external SSD also.

So I went ahead and installed it on the drive using manual partitioning (efi, swap, and root)

After the installation the first issue I faced is my internal drive's grub is messing with my external drive's grub. There are multiple grub entries. When I loaded the system in the grub menu there are two options run ubuntu or run ubuntu on nvme partition. When I click on first ubuntu it says load the kernel module first. I went to the boot sequence deleted all the grub entries. Created a new entry. Somehow after some random tries external drive's ubuntu booted successful.

But there are issues terminal is not opening so I went ahead and did reinstallation. Again I somehow booted into external drive's ubuntu while starting I saw some decompression errors and then GUI popped up with system encountered some errors and it is not loading. But cli mode (alt + f3) is working fine.

I am not able to understand what's the issue here. I also checked the ISO's checksum as I thought the iso might have been corrupt but its correct.

  1. I want to understand how grub will work in this case. There are many articles for windows + linux but none for linux + linux installation
  2. I want to make it work seamlessly in GUI mode

Hi all,

Since a few days i'm running some VMs on 6.8.0-1017. Some NFS issues seem to appear at random moments throughout the day. Mountpoints on NFS client are "Hanging" for a few seconds. NFS server does not show any disconnects or errors as far as i'm concerned.

Kernel was upgraded as shown in the title. Afterwards a reboot was executed. Any suggestions to further pinpoint this or any logging i can inspect?

I recently started managing a fleet of GPU servers. Several of them are Gigabyte G493-ZB3-AAP1s with 2x EPYC 9124s and 8x nvidia GPUs. I'm having some issues with PCI enumeration and nvme devices on these machines that I'm hoping maybe somebody has some ideas about. We're currently stuck on ubuntu 22.04 due to software requirements.

I went to reimage one of these servers recently, and learned that it had more nvme drives connected to it than I had seen before. It turns out there are a total of 7 nvme drives in this machine, but I only knew of six.

I learned of the seventh because I based my imaging environment on SystemRescue, which is derived from Arch. When I boot from SystemRescue, it sees and enumerates all 7 nvme devices without issue.

Booting from the ubuntu-server 22.04.5 live ISO, sometimes 5 are detected, other times 6 are detected, but never all 7. I have a similar issue with another server of the same make and model, where one nvme device randomly appears and disappears. I don't seem to have (obvious) issues on servers with 4 or fewer nvme devices.

My imaging scripts attempt to use all available storage with LVM, so when I try to reboot back to ubuntu after deploying the image from the SystemRescue environment, the system fails to boot due to "missing" nvme devices.

The root cause appears to be related to PCI enumeration:

  • PCI resource allocation shows many failures in Ubuntu that don't appear in SystemRescue.
    • failing to assign memory windows
    • failing to assign BAR spaces
    • many prefetchable memory regions mapped in the high address ranges (0x9000000000 and above) and quite a few "[disabled]" regions
    • regions apparently trying to allocate in overlapping spaces
    • possibly trying to allocate across multiple PCI segments simultaneously
  • SystemRescue successfully enumerates all devices with minimal parameters and no errors.
  • Device ordering/enumeration differs between SystemRescue and Ubuntu.
  • The issue appears during PCI resource allocation, not NVMe driver initialization

I'm currently using the HWE kernel (6.8.0-48-generic) but had the same issues with earlier kernel versions. SystemRescue uses Arch's linux-lts-6.6.47-1 kernel.

I've tried a number of different kernel parameters but so far I haven't found any that seem to help:

  • iomem=relaxed
  • pci=realloc,assign-buses
  • pci=nommconf
  • memmap=64G$256G
  • pci_mmcfg=relaxed
  • pci_reserve_host_bridge_window=4G
  • pci_hotplug.acpi_force=1
  • rootdelay=N (with various values of N)
  • amd_iommu=interrupted
  • systemd.debug-shell=1 systemd.unit=multi-user.target systemd.log_level=debug fastboot=0 nosplash systemd.show_status=true systemd.log_target=kmsg

Notably, SystemRescue doesn't use any of these special kernel parameters, and it seems to do just fine.

I'm not an expert on complex NUMA architectures, PCI initialization, etc, but I'm beginning to think that the issue is deep in the bowels of ubuntu's init process. If anybody has any ideas please let me know!

Hi all. I use Ubuntu 22.04 live Gnome cd (not installed) on my computer. I have a script that sets a few things the way I like. I also have four monitors. Here is my issue:

I use xfreerdp to connect to a windows machine and it usually is showing on two screens. If I get up and leave the computer the screen blank times out at 5 minutes. When I touch a key my xfreerdp windows have moved to another screen in single monitor mode. I have to either close it and reconnect or use ctrl-alt-enter to get it back..no big deal...just annoying.

Also, I use gsettings to rearrange the monitors and this is usually undone. I've got a script that sets them back.

Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Ok so here's the thing. I am an it student in greece and it seems tha ubuntu has become a requirement for the programming courses we will have. I didn't want to change my pc OS so i decided to buy the cheapest laptop i can find near me.

Its a cheap Lenovo laptop with like 4Gb of ram and 128 ssd amd other stuff. (Lenovo IdeaPad 1 15IGL7 15.6" FHD (Celeron Quad Core-N4120)) I thought it wouldn't be a problem if i would change from windows 11 to ubuntu in this laptop but when i went to see it form up close the personnel there told me they didn't know if it would bring any problem to the drivers if i did that or if the laptop was compatible with ubuntu. Them saying this made me slightly concerned.

So my question is can I install ubuntu in this laptop or should i look for something else?

I am about to manage a new Dell server, R450, using Ubuntu OS. To maximize our investment, we will require multiple virtual machines to be set up. My dilemma is in choosing the right platform. I prefer to use KVM but will need a GUI for ease of setup and management, especially for setting up the network part. How can I choose the best one out there? Do you have any recommendations?

I’m connecting to my Ubuntu 24.04 server using Termius from macOS. This is the first command I'm running on the server as it is a brand new install. It has happened multiple times and causes my script to fail so I have to reinstall the OS and start over. ChatGPT suggested doing "export TERM=xterm-256color" or typing “bash”before running the script but it didn't fix it.

I have the same problem if I connect via VNC.

Any help is greatly appreciated - thanks in advance!

When I was on Windows 11 I was able to have youtube videos on firefox outputting audio through the headphone jack and VLC or whatsapp (notifications) through the line-out (or vice versa, w/e it's just an example).. but i was able to choose the audio output per application.

Do I have this option in ubuntu 24.04 LTS? I asked chatgpt this question and I've spent hours trying and ended up messing up my system because it told me it's ok to remove pipewire, so i'll have to reinstall or try to recover the OS. Thank you if you reply.

Good morning all.

I have my subnet: aaa.bbb.24.xxx, where aaa.bbb.24.1 is the gateway, connected to the internet.

I have my laptop (windows 10) at aaa.bbb.24.2, and my server at aaa.bbb.24.5. My laptop and my server can both ping each other.

My laptop can also ping the gateway, which my server cannot.

I have tried creating a new netplan config yaml file:

network:
  version: 2
  renderer: networkd
  ethernets:
    eno1:
      dhcp4: no
      addresses:
        - aaa.bbb.24.5/24
      routes:
        - to: default
          via: aaa.bbb.24.1
      nameservers:
        addresses: [8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4]

But when I try to apply this netplan I get errors about conflicting IPv4 route declarations.

Does anyone have any advice? When I installed ubuntu for the first time on this box I set it up without any network connection at all, but then after that I set the IP using the ip commands

Right now this is my output from ip a:

2: eno1: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state UP group default qlen 1000
    link/ether aa:aa:aa:aa:aa:aa brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
    altname enp1s0
    inet aaa.bbb.24.5/24 brd aaa.bbb.24.255 scope global eno1
       valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
    inet6 aaaa::bbbb:cccc:dddd:eeee/64 scope link
       valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever

I am using a ThinkPad T480. When I installed Ubuntu, everything appeared very small at 100% scaling. Therefore, I activated fractional scaling at 1.5x. This made things readable but had an annoying side effect: apps like Spotify or VS Code were blurry after that. It's better than being way too small but still annoying as hell.

I researched a bit. I tried going back to 100% and decreasing the resolution, which just made everything blurry. I tried switching from Wayland to X11, which fixed the blurriness but resulted in screen tearing and frame drops. I tried increasing the font size at 100% scaling with GNOME Tweaks, which only made stuff look weird because icons stayed the same size, and only the fonts were readable. In the end, I tried updating the system, which also did not work.

These were all the tips and tricks I found online. I am out of options and very frustrated because there doesn’t seem to be a fix for my specific case. So, as a last, hopeless resort, I’m trying to see if anyone has an answer here.

Did anyone experience anything like this and has found a fix that just works without issues?
