Hello, I need some help from the kind people of reddit on our Colombia itinerary, specifically on whether to do a trip to Salento over Tayrona/Minca (or Cartagena). We are a couple on a holiday so value not travelling too extensively (without missing out on key experiences this part of the world). Budget is flexible, don't want to spend too much but don't need to do cheapest options...

Current thinking is:

Day 1: Arrive Medellin

Day 2: Medellin

Day 3: Medellin (Maybe day trip to Guatape, back for NYE)

Day 4: Medellin (Will be hungover!)

Day 5: Medellin

Day 6: Travel to Jardin

Day 7: Jardin

Day 8: Jardin

Day 9: Travel to Medellin

Day 10: Fly to Santa Marta, bus to Los Naranjos

Day 11: Tayrona NP

Day 12: Minca

Day 13: Minca

Day 14: Travel to Cartagena

Day 15: Cartagena

Day 16: Island (e.g., Isla Grande)

Day 17: Island

Day 18: Cartagena

Day 19: Flight

Do you think Salento is a must? I am balancing the effort of travelling and whether Jardin is comparable enough to miss it, given it's in the coffee region and has good hikes. Read mixed things about Tayrona/Minca so not sure if would be worth switching this up a bit but may also be unmissable (also from a part of the world without nice beaches and could be a nice break from inland activities!).

When I was a solo traveller in my 20s it was easy to make friends. You would stay at a Hostel and literally just talk to anyone at a table and within minutes you're all off to go do the same thing and party later on that night.

Now that I'm older, Hostels arent something I can do, as I value sleep more and drinking much less. Plus I have about 10 years on these kids so it gets a little weird at a certain point.

So far I have tried making friends on a free walking tour, which is hit or miss, and tried cooking classes which while incredibly fun, seem to be filled with couples, mostly in their 50s & 60s.

Going to bars is also hit or miss, as most bars in Europe dont seem to have an actual bar with barstools where you can sit and make friends. Tables with people who come with groups seems to be much more common.

What's been your way of meeting other solo travelers or otherwise making friends while traveling in your 30s?

Are they a legit company? They have a decent instagram page but there’s not that many reviews or other information I can find about them online.

Their trips sound amazing though, so I was hoping someone here could give me some insight.

Have you or anyone you known traveled with them?

If you traveled with them, was it worth it/ would you travel with them again?

Or do you know how else I can determine how legit they are?

Thanks in advance!

I'm from the US and had applied for the E-visa in August. I got approved for 30 days but ended up changing my itinerary. The status for the original visa is now expired.

I want to visit Vietnam before the end of the year, can I simply just apply for another e-visa again? Especially in such a short time since my original application? Is is there anything I should be aware of?

Also if I request for 60 days stay, I can arrive anytime within that period right? There's no saying I need to be in the country within the first week of my stated arrival date?

Thank you!

**edit

Thanks everyone for your insights!

My wife and I are travelling for 6.5 months next year and would appreciate some feedback on our itinerary for India. This is the first country we'll be visiting and we've allocated 4 weeks to it, starting in early January.

This is our current plan. What are we missing? Do we have too much time in a particular location?

| Day | Location | Notes | |

|

|

| | 1 | Delhi | Arrive early morning | | 2 | Delhi | | | 3 | Delhi | | | 4 | Delhi/Jaisalmer | Flight to Jaisalmer (1.5 hours) | | 5 | Jaisalmer | | | 6 | Jaisalmer | | | 7 | Jaisalmer | | | 8 | Jaisalmer/Jodhpur | Train to Jodhpur (5-6 hours) | | 9 | Jodhpur | | | 10 | Jodhpur | | | 11 | Jodhpur | | | 12 | Jodhpur | | | 13 | Jodhpur/Jaipur | Flight to Jaipur (1 hour) | | 14 | Jaipur | | | 15 | Jaipur | Day trip to Pushkar | | 16 | Jaipur | | | 17 | Jaipur | | | 18 | Jaipur/Agra | Train to Agra (5 hours) | | 19 | Agra | | | 20 | Agra | | | 21 | Agra/Lucknow | Flight to Lucknow (1 hour) | | 22 | Lucknow | | | 23 | Lucknow | | | 24 | Lucknow | | | 25 | Lucknow/Varanasi | Flight to Varanasi (1 hour) | | 26 | Varanasi | | | 27 | Varanasi | | | 28 | Varanasi/Delhi | Flight to Delhi (1 hour) for onward travel |

We are quite conscious of not burning out on this trip, especially as we'll still have 5 months travel ahead of us! We originally included Udaipur as a stop between Jodhpur and Jaipur but it meant moving to a new place every 3 days. By removing Udaipur, we are able to take a flight between Jodhpur and Jaipur instead of a 5-6 hour train between Jodhpur and Udaipur, then the same from Udaipur to Jaipur. The itinerary feels much more manageable.

Would really appreciate your thoughts 🙏

Edit: we visited Mumbai, Goa, and Kerala on a previous trip.

As a South Asian from South Africa, it is sad to say that my experience in Japan has been negative due to interactions that have left me feeling racially profiled. Including rudeness, unwillingness to assist in general in stores (even when English speaking), as well as a local going as far as to not use the booth in the public restroom after me, but rather waiting for another booth to become available. My interactions compared to those experienced by my Caucasian partner in general have been distinctly different.

An interesting observation, is that my Interaction with the older generation has been more pleasant. The country, experiences, culture in terms of general respect and consideration is something to be appreciated and admired. My experience has unfortunately been marred by the apparent difference in treatment due to my appearance.

I'm planning a trip with around 3-4 nights each in Barcelona, Madrid, and Lisbon. We prefer to avoid flying 'within' a trip and try to travel by train where possible. But now that the overnight train from Madrid to Lisbon is no longer running (rip) getting to Portugal in this way feels quite difficult.

I'm looking at options for what could be a roadtrip to take us from Madrid to Lisbon and tick off some good destinations on the way. It could be just a couple days or as long as four or five days if the stops are good enough. I'd like to do this as a way of seeing some beautiful things outside of the big cities, like maybe some more natural or rural sites or some little day hikes and tours, but struggling to choose between the north and the south of Spain, and also a bit intimidated by driving narrow streets in villages to get to our sights etc. I'm also not that interested in beaches (coming from Australia lol)

Where should we consider going to stitch together into this part of a trip?

Hi everyone,

I am looking for some tips from people who have visited the Amazon Rainforest. I live in the UK and I have always had a love for the rainforest, and I'd love the opportunity to visit someday. I am thinking about beginning to plan a trip for sometime in the next few years. However, I have really bad emetophobia (fear of vomit/vomiting) that I hope would be more under control by then but still, I have questions.

Obviously all of the trips seem to have some kind of speedboat or canoe through the river whether it be to get to lodges or for excursions - is it common to get seasick on these? Also, food/drink - is it common to get food or water poisoning there?

I would also love to hear about how you got there, what company you went with, if you have any recommendations, etc.! I haven't looked into it too much yet but I want to start saving and it would be great to know what options are out there. I would like to go as ethically as possible!

I'm a 24 year old female and would likely be going with my partner! Thank you.

I'm planning a trip for December and I have several questions about it. First, we are flying to Amsterdam, and after that we're considering purchasing the Off-peak Group Ticket to go to Valkenburg. The main question about this is if it's allowed to travel directly from the airport with this kind of ticket, as where I come from, the airport is always excluded from promotions or cheaper tickets. Another question related is about the transfer stops. We'll be staying in Heerlen for one night (in order to enjoy properly the Christmas atmosphere), so I would like to know if we can leave our luggage at the hotel in the transfer time and after that continue our route to Valkenburg, or whether we have to pay again for the ticket between Heerlen and Valkenburg. Also, I saw that it's possible to come again to Heerlen at night without any inconvenience for 3.8€, is it correct?

Second topic is about accomodation. I've been looking for different options in the Valkenburg area and Maastricht, but all the offers were quite expensive, so that's why I'm planning to stay at Heerlen. Is it a good option?

Finally I have questions regarding Christmas markets in Valkenburg. I saw there are different tickets for each market and activity, but is there any ticket which includes all of them together? Because I don't know how much time I will spend in each of them and maybe if I buy them separately, I'm late for the next one (and also I'm looking for any discount related to grouping tickets). Also, I want to visit all of them on one afternoon/evening. Is it viable? We're planning about starting this Christmas visit around 16:00. We'll be in Valkenburg for one day as we'll be going to Amsterdam the next day.

Thank you so much for your help!

Hi, me and my friends (7 people in total) have decided to go to Vienna for the new year (December 30, 2024-January 3, 2025). We planned to visit some of the famous places like the zoo, Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien or Museum of Natural History Vienna, one of the palaces, explore the city etc... I am interested in your advice on what else to visit, where to eat, some good clubs etc. I would like to know if the museums are open on 31.12. or 1.1., since I assume that the shops are not working or am I wrong? Where to spend New Year's Eve (club or square?), can alcohol be consumed on the streets during that night? Any good restaurants, Austrian home cooking? I read that you can buy a 3-day public transport ticket, it includes all types of transport like trams, buses, metro...? Is it worth spending almost the whole day at the zoo and is it open during New Year's days? We plan to go by car and leave it in one of the Park+Ride garages, is it true that parking there costs approx. 5e/day and is it safe to leave the car there?

I know this is a lot of questions and I will be grateful if I get an answer to at least some of them, also I will gladly accept and consider any advice :D

Edit: We are a group of young people between 23-27 years old, some of us are students :D

I'm a US citizen and I'm planning on visiting Langkawi Island in Malaysia this upcoming January for a vacation. I've looked into the rules for driving but, I'm a little confused. I know I need a valid driver license (which I have) and an IDP (which I do not have). I've been living in China for a quite some years and am unable to make it back to the USA to get the IDP. Is there a way for me to still acquire one before my trip? Or alternatively is there a way to acquire a temporary Malaysian license?

Looking for a pice of advice from someone experienced with the culture in vietnam.

Today when visiting Ho Chi Minh city as a tourist, I went to a bigger street market (one of those indoor markets that mostly sell brand copies). I was trying to sharpen my bartering skills and asked a lady for the price of a basic white shirt. She wanted 250k for it, but I suggested 50k (not what I had envision as last offer). She got mad, snatched the shirt out of my hands and told me angrily to go away. My guess is that my offer might have been insultingly low, but from what I understood bartering is a big part of the street markets here.

Did I do something offensive? And if that is the case, please enlighten me how I should interact in markets in the future to not make people angry. This has made me slightly offputt, and I found myself avoiding other markets. Please give me your advice and opinions. It is important to me not to make people around me sad or angry.

I want to share my experience with China Eastern Airlines.

I was flying from Seoul to Singapore with a layover in Shanghai.

Seoul to Shanghai: Departure at 8:45pm, scheduled arrival at 10:25pm Shanghai to Singapore: Departure at 11:50pm The layover was supposed to be 85 minutes.

However, the first flight from Seoul to Shanghai had a slight delay, and we ended up arriving in Shanghai at 10:50pm, leaving only 60 minutes for the layover.

I rushed towards the transit area, but unfortunately, it was too late.

The staff explained that while I might be able to make it to the boarding gate in time, my luggage would not.

As a result, we had to reschedule for another flight the next day.

They rebooked us on an SQ flight at 8am and arranged a hotel for the night, fully paid for by China Eastern.

We gathered at the hotel at 5am and took the airport transfer provided by the hotel staff back to the airport.

In the future, I'll ensure to schedule a minimum 2-hour layover for smoother connections.

Hi! Me and our group of 6 friends were wanting to spend the week of thanksgiving in a small town in the Appalachians. We were looking to hike, walk around a Main Street or two, and engage in water activities (lake or river). Walkability is definitely something we’d like for our staying in the town. The only restriction we have is a friend who does not want to drive more than roughly 5 hours from Northern Virginia. The cheaper the better but we are going to split no matter what which should help reduce costs.

I've used agencies like booking.com, Expedia, Agoda & FlightCentre in the past without issues but I see a lot of hate for booking through them and not directly though the airline.

That said, currently looking at flights with AirAsia and their website is an absolute nightmare.

What's been your experience booking flights through any of these third party apps?

I may attract some hate for this, but having just completed a day trip there, Machu Picchu isn't all it's cracked up to be. Yes, it's stunning. And yes, the setting is lovely. But the cost and effort involved and the throngs of visitors greatly detracted from my experience. I'm glad I did it, but twelve days into my Peru trip I'm not sure it's even in my top five experiences. Obviously YMMV, especially if you do the Inca Trail, or you have a high tolerance for hordes of people. If you go, here are some thoughts and tips:

Base: We stayed in Ollantaytambo and loved it. There's a significant tourist footprint, but it still has some charm, with a cute little plaza and cobblestone streets.

Train: We took the Perurail Vistadome from Ollantaytambo. The view was beautiful, but nothing you wouldn't see on a day drive through the Sacred Valley. The alpaca fashion show and traditional dance were a bit cheesy, but fun nonetheless.

Bus: I read a lot online, but had no idea I would have to wait in line for an hour just to get on the bus to the site. There was a similar wait coming back. Time your visit and trains accordingly. Also, buy your tickets online in advance at https://comprar.consettur.com/

Guide: Is a guide required? I read a lot of conflicting information online. Answer: guides are recommended but NOT required (source: my guide and official signage at the site). I found a guide helpful, however, especially as the bus system was organized chaos.
