Telltale pioneered this genre of games (itself the newest incarnation of the old adventure games) with their huge hit the Walking Dead Season 1. Dontnod copied the format and produced the highly successful Life is Strange Season 1. But all the sequels for both games were nowhere near as good or as successful, and now Telltale is dead and Life is Strange is probably on life support.

Is anyone still making, or trying to make, this style of games? I think it has a lot of potential and is a unique type of storytelling that I'd like to see more of. And I think the successful games show that it's possible to make a great game this way which makes money.

I think the downside to this genre is that if your writing and storytelling aren't great, you have nothing else to fall back on. Most people don't find that Bethesda is great at storytelling, but they create large open world games where people can have fun anyway. Making a character and leveling up and shooting raiders and ghouls is still fun even if the story is weak.

But with this Telltale style of game, there really is nothing else but writing and storytelling and characters. If those are weak, you have nothing else, and your game won't sell well. Which is, of course, just the same as most movies and tv series. But those industries know this and are used to focusing on nothing else. Videogame companies aren't used to the concept that storytelling is everything and if you don't get the best possible writing then you fail.

Disclaimer: Long post ahead, skip if you don't feel like reading haha

As we approach the end of the year, I want to reflect on my experience diving into PC gaming—it’s been an exciting, sometimes nerve-wracking adventure!

Big thanks to my bf for pushing me into this and encouraging me to explore so many incredible games. This year, I’ve discovered some fantastic PC games (and one VR game!) that I’d love to share with you all bunch of stranger gamers.

1️⃣ Enshrouded – My first survival game on PC, and I couldn’t stop playing! I got hooked, and I spent hours and hours exploring, crafting, and battling. If you enjoyed Valheim or Grounded, this game is a must-try. It’s beautiful, immersive, and perfect for survival fans.

2️⃣ Dungeonborne – This was my intro to extractor games, and it was thrilling at first! I also tried Dark and Darker, but Dungeonborne felt smoother. Sadly, OP classes ruined it, and with the devs abandoning the game, we had to quit. A fun but short-lived experience.

3️⃣ V Rising – A vampire-themed survival game with exciting progression. Each boss fight and quest kept me hooked (stayed in PvE server but still had fun). The combination of survival mechanics and supernatural elements makes this game a standout for fans of the genre.

4️⃣ No Rest for the Wicked – A stunning roguelike still in early access but already one of my favorites. The art style, narrative, and gameplay are top-notch, and I’m eagerly waiting for multiplayer and full release. It’s challenging but rewarding—perfect for roguelike enthusiasts. Highly recommended 10/10.

5️⃣ Return to Moria – A LOTR-themed survival game that’s relaxing and fun, though not as addictive as Enshrouded. It’s a great option for those who enjoy base-building and singing while mining lol. We also tried Dawn of Defiance, another survival game with a unique Greek mythology theme.

6️⃣ Mini Motorways – A cozy and strategic game where you build road networks to keep traffic moving. It’s simple, fun, and perfect for quick gaming sessions. It’s one of my go-to games when I want to unwind without committing too much time. (I watch Lirik on Twitch a lot so I discovered this game from one of his Sub Sundays)

7️⃣ Valiant Hearts – A heartfelt, story-driven game inspired by true WWI events. Its charming art style and emotional narrative make it incredibly memorable. If you liked This War of Mine (played this on Xbox), this game will hit you in all the right emotional spots.

VR Game: (gotta discover more) 1️⃣ Beat Saber – This VR rhythm game is so much fun! It’s an excellent mix of music, movement, and satisfaction. Plus, it’s a sneaky way to burn calories while enjoying yourself. (Playing this on Meta Quest)

Recent additions: 1️⃣ Deadlock – This MOBA shooter is so addicting! I’ve already spent 300+ hours playing / learning its mechanics and sweating through matches. It’s challenging but kinda rewarding, and I highly recommend it if you love competitive games. Let me know if you need an invite to try it! (Abrams main ;p)

2️⃣ Marvel Rivals – Fast-paced, action-packed matches featuring Marvel heroes! It’s been compared to Overwatch, and I can see why. I’m still learning the heroes, but so far, I’m loving Hulk, Black Panther, Jeff the Land Shark, and Doctor Strange. Perfect for quick, satisfying games. (Idk why but I see ppl hating on this game, why?)

3️⃣ Path of Exile 2 – Even in early access, this game is phenomenal. The art, immersion, and gameplay are leagues ahead of Diablo IV (which I loved during its beta and release but had to move on from as it became less satisfying). It’s clear the devs poured their heart into this, and it’s a must-play for A-RPG fans. (Ranger lvl 30+ atm)

TL;DR: I started PC gaming this year and I've loved it! From survival games to roguelikes and competitive shooters, these are some of my favorites. Glad that my partner has introduced the world of gaming to me! <3

My brother and I love gaming and it’s honestly the only hobby that either of us have so we play A LOT of games. There were a lot we were super hyped for but def got disappointed by. The favorites I played with him this year are:

  1. Helldivers 2- it’s fun shooting things with other people in an open world without worrying about hackers.
  2. MechWarrior 5 - we love playing mechs and honestly this game is really well done.
  3. MechWarrior Online- an oldie but a goodie. Not that many hackers, and mech shooting is so. much. fun.
  4. Satisfactory 1.0- honestly the best managed game with great mechanics that I’ve ever played.
  5. POE 2- this one I’m on the fence about because there’s a lot of mechanics I really don’t think the devs thought through really well and the game’s early release was overhyped. But still, my lightning deadeye kicked serious ass.

Curious to hear everyone else’s!

I’m not a computer guy but I own a computer. If anything goes wrong with it I have no idea what to do. I don’t do any maintenance on it or any updates that aren’t automatic.

But I love pc games. The kinda of games that are less flashy and more strategic. And I love the ability to have access to older games that only pcs have.

Still, I’d like to have 1 gaming source that’s low maintenance like a console but has the deep dive gaming library of the pc. Is this possible?

I read a comment about someone willing their account to someone and it made me wonder. Do you think gaming networks will just lock accounts that are x of numbers of years old cause they know the original owner has passed away?

So I bought this game plus a copy for my wife and we were super excited to play through it together. We started playing but the more we played the weirder it seemed that nothing was happening, no story was going on and no interesting quests were showing up.

Turns out that multiplayer in this game is a storyless sandbox mode, which completely ruins the entire reason for even playing it. You are just building for the sake of it.

The game also doesn't TELL you any of this up front, before buying or when starting to play, happily pretending that you are going to play some version of the actual game. You are left to figure this out yourself off the back of your own wasted money and time.

I basically bought two copies of a bait-and-switch. I would gladly refund it if I still could, it was nothing but a big disappointment and a total waste of time and money.

Sorry if this seems elementary, but I'm new to PC gaming. I'm handicapped and trying to find a set up that I can use. I am trying to use an azeron cyborg 2 for my functional hand, and a full joystick for my nerve damaged side since its easier to hold than a mouse. Is this something you can set up on steam? Do I need to purchase some kind of adaptor? Thanks in advance!

I'm curious about the contrast between gamers. My easy answers are Good: Commander Shepard (Mass Effect) Evil: Sephiroth (FF7)
