I insist all the mentioned tools available today are absolutely unusable in practice, though some of them do formally work.

For example I personally can use only small centralised exchange services, because DEXes and atomic swaps are too complicated for my understanding.

Currently I use localmonero, however, looking to make larger purchases. I don’t care about KYC, just looking for a good rate!

Thanks

Interesting quote about adoption of Bitcoin in El Salvador:

The authors had expected that people might be skeptical of Bitcoin because of the volatility (and therefore risk) of cryptocurrencies in general. But instead, people shared that they did not trust the app or Bitcoin because they are not anonymous, as cash is. The latter explains why Chivo Wallet was not even used to conduct transactions in dollars.

As you can see, people naturally want private transactions. Cash is private but requires physical transfer. Monero is private digital cash and that is its only focus. What's happening now is that the world doesn't know that Monero exists. We need to educate people about Monero and that you don't need the government's permission to start using it peer to peer.

Even though the price is low, Monero's future is bright. There are many things to look forward to! Full chain membership proofs (FCMP). Seraphis. P2P exchanges like localmonero, Serai, Haveno. Atomic swaps with Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash and Ethereum.

Silent Donor is happy to announce that we now enable anonymous Monero donations to be sent to any charity or nonprofit worldwide. 🎉 With offices in the US and Europe, we operate the largest anonymous donation platform in the world, built from the ground-up to protect the privacy of donors.

Now you don't have to wait for a given charity to accept Monero as a donation option - use our platform to send Monero donations to any nonprofit cause you are passionate about, leveraging our global giving network.

Click here to send your anonymous donation today:

🚀 There are a lot of discussions on this subreddit around how to get Monero more into mainstream discussions, or ways to help increase its visibility and utility. We think this charitable use case can help provide at least a step in the right direction, while still being true to the privacy focus of Monero.

How it works:

  • The Monero you send goes first to our international charitable fund's wallet. Then, our fund sends the donation to the organization you chose, but it comes as a donation from our fund - your information is kept private and is not shared with anyone. We are happy to send you a donation receipt after we have sent your anonymous donation as well, if you would like.
  • We can send donations in Monero if the org you chose accepts it. If not, we will convert the Monero to fiat and send it that way. We send all donations at the conclusion of every month.

As you likely know, privacy matters:

  • In addition to protecting the privacy of donors who simply wish to lead more private lives (for personal or religious reasons, wealthy donors who wish to avoid public attention, etc), we recognize that the stakes are higher for some donors.
  • Just last month, a young woman was jailed in Russia after it was made know that she donated $51 to a pro-Ukraine charity. Bank accounts of protestors in Canada have been frozen, same with bank accounts in Nigeria after the #EndSARs movement, and many more similar instances have taken place across the world, all targeting donors.
  • Monero can help people feel safe as they donate to causes, unbound by traditional banking systems and free from fears they will be persecuted by those in positions of power as a result. We're happy to play a role in bridging the gap between a Monero donor and charitable impact.

We are around to answer questions and listen to input from this community as well!

Please note that the charity/nonprofit organizations chosen by donors on our donation form will need to pass our due diligence (ie you need to choose a registered nonprofit organization). Also note we do not allow donations to be sent to individual people, nor any political donations.

The roadmap on the official website could arguably use an update. Please share your thoughts on what to include for the future as well as past achievements that are missing and should be added.

I'd argue it would be worthwhile to also include minor improvements and releases in past achievements, as it will show more activity.

In my opinion we all should be supporting the network as best we can.

If you aren't running a node, or mining XMR, why not?

I remember mining XMR back in the days with XMRig. What do I have to look for if it’s my goal to find a lost wallet on old HDD?

I bought a SSD external hard-drive specifically so I could run my own Monero node.

The first 140gb downloaded in a single day. Now, when I open the wallet, it says "Daemon is synchronized" for about a minute, before the progress bar drops to zero and the "Daemon blocks remaining" message pops up, currently with 319,000+ blocks remaining. After the initial 140gb over a day or so, it's now inching along at about 10gb per day.

Is this normal? Do I need to fix it, or do something to speed it up, or prune it?

I'm worried I'm going to wait all this time then the blockchain is just going to be corrupt anyway because it took so long to download, which is what happened to me before I got a SSD.

Most ways of buying XMR from P2P Exchanges use some form of a KYC service like a money transfer platform or a CEX. Weather that be Local Monero, Agoradesk or Robosats.

Recommendations of XMR adoption are typically through KYC Money Transfer Service or CEX coin exchanges rather then making a variety of p2p options that don't require KYC at all.

Cash to mail maybe the only real way, within the Moneros philosophy of anonymity, to buy anonymously. And this works yes but isn't ideal for adoption on a larger scale due its large inconvenience.

Money Transfer Services

At any time, your account could be deleted by these MTS for any reason they see as fit, with no reason ever given to you. They'll even ban you, the sender of money, because you sent to a account that exchanges your cash to XMR. To even send on their platforms, one has to give a selfie, Identification, Personal address, Full name, Phone number. Worse of all, on all of these platforms, the recipient can see your full name, voiding the anonymous username you've used to sign up to for these p2p exchanges.

Centralized Crypto-Currency Exchanges

A CEX will ask for the same personal information but its even worse. If they ban you, they could hold your crpyto and lock you out. And they already force a hold on your crypto when you buy. They can track you outside the CEX because the blockchains on CEX all typically transparent. They could know that you've bought XMR and how much. Note the crypto you bought on a CEX would be tied to your identity. This is because the crpyto used to buy xmr goes to transparent block-chain to a known exchange wallet, from whatever crypto to XMR.

Creating more anonymous Fiat to XMR options

One thing that should be a more widely available option, with low fees and cost, is prepaid debits and gift cards.

Prepaid debit cards are perfect as they can be purchase with no ID and multiple can be purchase at a time, all with cash. Gift cards are in effect the same in their anonymity with prepaids as they also don't require ID and once again can be purchase in bulk.

There needs to be more options in general for Fiat to XMR it can't be through a CEX or MTS as you need to use KYC. The needs to be easier options, if you want no one to possibly to know that you hold monero or the amount. That should up to you.

In a world in which monero could one day be prosecuted, users can only be protected with non KYC methods.

If anyone has any more ideas in which one could buy XMR anonymously do not hesitate to mention or create a discussion.

Hello everyone,

As you all know, we have seen a huge increase in the number of transactions during March this year. However, as far as I understand, it has pretty much been confirmed by Monero Research Lab researcher Rucknium that the increase is due to spam:

This is no doubt quite sad. It would have been nice if it had been a real growth of users.

The good news is that Monero still works as well as ever and several improvements are on their way. Furthermore, soon both decentralized exchanges Serai and Haveno will be released.

But I thought that perhaps it would be good to create a thread where we can share ideas on how to grow the number of users. I, like many of you, can't help on the research or development front, but most of us can do something to promote Monero.

I'm going to start a Twitter account and start spreading the word of Monero on there. I know that some of you put up stickers, which is also a good idea. But what else can we do to boost the growth a bit? Do you have any ideas?

Yes, I realize it's not really about Monero, but I think there are those who use Bisq (v1), because it's much easier to buy BTC and then exchange it for XMR.

Well, basically, here it is:

I haven't had time to test everything myself yet, but I think some of the ideas can be taken over to Haveno.

By the way, don't forget about Haveno! Tests, tests and more tests need the project as much as programmers. And also your feedback and ideas:

hi all,

i’m looking for some input here.

i have a fairly large social media presence - 120K on TikTok, 37K on IG - it’s non-crypto related (vegan + fitness content). ive always promoted monero to friends, family and tried to find ways to adopt it in day-to-day life but never on my personal page

my worry would be if i made a video that got 1M+ views i would face serious gov. scrutiny amongst other things…

am i being silly?

p.s im always looking for ways to promote monero, if anyone has any ideas feel free to drop me a dm

Previous versions didn’t work due to the command “set priority” didn’t work properly.

Please update to the latest version and you will definitely feel comfortable regardless mempool size and speed of adaptive block size growing.

Even “refresh” work almost as fast as it were some 1K txs mempool.

If this is an attack (I believe so). Because Monero is currently heavy under attacks from all sides.

The flooding has three potential attack vectors (next to the well known regulatory attacks, price suppression, and defaming in mainstream media)

  1. Targeting usability of Monero
  2. Targeting ring signatures
  3. Targeting community

We know that usability is a problem, because the algo needs time to adapt to the flood. However I haven't seen extensive research on it. Which bothers me. I only see strong opinions. So my advice is to wait for /u/rucknium paper and hopefully others who take the time to look into the actual data sets.

If chainananlysis companies are targeting the rings we should come up with some community recommendations. E.g. if every community member would send at least one or two tx per day (or churn) we would probably counter act all the negative effects, while we can think of a ring upgrade earlier than Seraphis or FMSP.

What is probably the worst attack is social engineers trying to look for cracks in the community to exploit now or further down the road. Be wary of highly opinionated newcomers. Be opinionated yourself but lay down your thought process and argumentation and even better provide reliable data. And be open to other opinions. Take them in. Think before you react.

Maybe nothing has to be done at all. "Obvious" quick fixes have often unintended down sides that might haunt us later.

Monero is heavily sold short by certain players/attackers. The attackers rely on Monero being niche. When Monero hits mainstream awareness it will be much harder to manipulate. If they can fund expensive price suppression they won't bother paying x10 or x100 for a transaction. The digital cash narrative is important. What fees are acceptable for Moneor to be seen as digital cash. (I'd argue not more than around $10 ct). Monero's price is currently an extreme outlier. It "should be" around 5 to 10k if it were not for attacks. And then fees would make more sense as the algo prices fees in XMR and not USD.

So if you want to fight for something. Fight against price suppression. It's the one thing that we all can agree upon, and it has a hge impact on fees, hash rate, public perception (adoption both as private store of wealth and digital cash).

Make CEX like Poloniex, HTX, KuCoin, Gate delist XMR.

Make people aware to not use CEX.

Help people (friends and family) onboard to DEX and P2P markets.

Spend time in other communities on reddit and elsewhere.

This is the real fight. They only can manipulate prices when they have access to CEX.
