I installed Linux mint on my Lenovo X131e and installing updates has been problematic. Initially I thought only Firefox was not “getting internet” but looking at the apt-get messages it appears even that is having issues.

I have never been much a Linux user since the mid90s. But have used it off and on.

I am going to be using this in my game shop to display stuff on my monitors around the shop, mostly event codes and event standings for Magic the gathering (this uses a webpage from wizards). And to play music.

I have OpenVPN setup with Proton servers. They work just fine, but I have to manually connect via the Network Manager every time I log in, which means I forget to use them nearly every time. Is there a way to make the computer automatically connect to the VPN on login?

Edit: Solved!

I was using Gnome Online Accounts without any problems for my Google Drive and Calendar. All of a sudden, the drive wasn't working, something about invalid credentials. This has happened in the past. What would remedy it was deleting the info and resigning in. This time, when I did that, I couldn't complete the sign in.

I go to System Settings > Online Accounts > Google. When I enter my user name, it gets stuck and doesn't load the password screen 9 times out of 10. I will retry by closing the window. On the odd occasion it gets to the password screen, it gets stuck there. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this?

Is there any way to pull in the workspace switcher for the panel from Xfce when using Cinnamon? That's basically the one thing that makes me want to switch back to Xfce. I like Cinnamon better in general, but being able to see and move applications via the workspace switcher in Xfce is a strong sell.

Is there any way to get the Xfce workspace switcher on Cinnamon? I've got hot corners enabled right now to try to replace it, but it's definitely not as nice as being able to just drag applications across workspaces right in the switcher. Plus, having the application icons in the switcher makes it much easier to see at a glance what's going on in each workspace.

Interesting stuff in here. New EDGE ISO, the team studying the pros and cons of Wayland and the comment about Ubuntu's "increased focus on Snap, the quality of their 24.04 package base and what this means for us going forward" really caught my eye. Thoughts?

I've always liked Linux Mint. It's been one of my go-to distros for a long time.

Lately though my interest in using it has waned due to the fact it's based on Ubuntu. I'm not a fan of what Canonical is doing with Ubuntu, snap focused, and some of the tracking they've added.

I realize the Linux Mint team does their best to remove this from their fork, but as Ubuntu bakes it in more and more with each release, I'm wondering if it makes sense to drop Ubuntu and focus on LMDE solely instead.

It would also put them closer to the upstream source instead of being a fork of a fork. And at this point I trust distros based on Debian a lot more than distros based on Ubuntu.

What do you think?

I was impressed by how light the RAM usage is on Linux Mint 21.2. I made a live usb and at cold boot was around 745MB which was only slightly higher than MX Linux. Very impressive considering how much more modern Cinnamon is and how much better it looks.

I was on Ubuntu which was using 1.6GB at idle and since my machine has fixed RAM of 4GB, I thought it best to switch to something lighter.

So I installed it and couldn't be happier. It's very snappy, looks incredible and works intuitively.

Great job Linux Mint team 💪

Is there a way to change the behavior of a middle click on an application in the panel away from Close and instead to New Window/Instance? I keep trying to say open a new Firefox window and instead close my existing window.

Recently I installed Linux Mint 21.2, I already updated it and installed some programs.

Any tip about configurations or programs?

Skyve is an useful utility for Cities:skylines that help troubleshooting mods, In the Skyve's steam page it say to use wine to make it work, sadly I haven't been able to do so as I'm new to Linux.

Hello !

As Mint is based on Ubuntu, I'm wondering if it will follow the missteps (to me at least) Ubuntu is doing to demote *.deb packages in favor of snaps?

Well that based on Ubuntu 23.10’s New Software App Will Demote DEBs (Apparently) post, and its lemmy.ml discussion.

Thanks !

Edit: Responses indicate, at least so far, Mint is not following Ubuntu's decisions regarding snap. Thanks to all who responded !

Linux Mint 21.2 released (mirrors.edge.kernel.org)

Linux Mint 21.2 is out on the servers, but hasn't been announced yet.

Enjoy updating!

I noticed the updater was incredibly slow today. security.ubuntu.com seems to be down. Is that the reason the updater isn't working so well right now? Why is that the case? It makes it somewhat difficult to apply other updates. Even changing mirrors is incredibly slow and hardly works.

Also, how long does this usually go of for if so?

Update: Seems to be working fine now. Anyone know what happened?

Switched to an AMD graphics card recently and ran "sudo apt remove --purge" on all ^nvidia* and ^libnvidia* packages. Unfortunately, one package (libnvidia-compute-470) seems to not get the message and won't remove itself. Quick search around the internet on solutions have not resolved the issue yet. Wondering if anyone had any ideas how to manually remove this package? Cheers!

I realized today - after using my laptop to give a presentation at work - I have nearly completed transitioned from Windows as an operating system for work and school for the past year in favor of Linux Mint (specifically XFCE) on my laptop. Super interesting to step back and analyze this and recognize just how easily this transition has come to be as opposed to a potentially painful process of circumventing what would be natural processes on Windows.

Thank you to the devs of Mint and the entire Linux community as well! Here's to many more years to come using the Linux kernel!

Hi folks, I occasionally search out new themes and icons for Cinnamon but today, after a day of not using my laptop, the Themes GUI doesn't open. It doesn't show any process on System Monitor. Not sure why this would suddenly happen and I restored a snapshot from 2 days ago using Timeshift but it didn't work. Any ideas on what it could be? I will most likely do a clean install of the new ISO (Victoria) when it releases so if I can't fix before then, so be it. Thanks.
