So i have been pulling my hair out trying to figure out why my grub theme wasn't changing and i figured out i would leave instructions for future generations

  1. install grub customizer( sudo apt install grub-customizer)
  2. I noticed when i was in Grub customizer i went into File>Change environment i had a warning triangle for this "/boot/grub/device.map" so i did "sudo nano mkdir /boot/grub/device.map" to make the file
  3. Download your theme from your favorite place and put it somewhere you wont delete it
  4. Extract the compressed file
  5. go into the grub theme file you just extracted, now its a folder in a folder what you need to do is copy all the files where the images and theme.text file is and put it in the main directory I.E the first folder you go into and delete the old folder so you are left with everything in the single main file
  6. Close the new folder and compress to a tar.gz file
  7. go into grub customizer and go to appearance settings and click the blue plus to add a theme, find the tar.gz folder (you may need to select the "all files" option in the bottom left to see it
  8. Click save
  9. Go to the terminal and type "sudo update-grub"
  10. Reboot and enjoy!

To mention im on Deb 12.8 with an encrypted drive

Is anyone else having the same problem? Fresh netinstall with Gnome.

I'm not even sure how to begin troubleshooting this.

I have a custom developed jar and a custom shell script that I have written to wrap around the jar.

If I run the script as the "application account" at the command line, it works fine.

That said, I am having issues "plugging" the shell script into systemd.

If I try to reference the script in a systemd service file and then try to start it with the service hooks, the script fires, but it appears the jar file is either starting and getting killed or never starting. I have the java command to run the jar file creating a log file for redirecting standard out. The log file is getting created but the java file is not logging anything to the log file.

Any suggestions on what to look at?

Hello everyone,

I have some questions regarding the FDE autodecryption with TPM.

I used systemd-cryptenroll to succesfully enter it into the TPM at slot 2!

However whenever I press enter on the Debian entry in Grub it still asks for my password to decrypt.

Can people point me in a direction in which I can make this working?

I know it’s been a while since it was voted but it makes life so much easier at install now. It’s not forced open users but at least it’s available. I run on pretty recents hardware and it saved my bacon a lot.

I was never able to use the usb stick with the proprietary drivers before. It never works for me even with the tutorials. Now it’s just flawless.

My second monitor no longer gets signal and is not showing in display settings after nvidia driver installation. It was working with nouveau so why it is not receiving signal now? I am on debian bookworm

Original Title: I installed debian stable with the dvd offline image, and also set a root password, is this a security risk? i have my actual user "arkboi" in the sudoers file, meaning i can do sudo apt update, but is this root thing dangerous?

Heyo I got myself a new Laptop and everything works like a charm - besides Network card. I also have the RTL8852BE and was stupid enough not to look that one up when I selected it (referring to this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/debian/comments/1hazfx2/cannot_get_rtl8852be_wifi_card_to_work_with/ ).

So anyway the problem is I can connect to wifi but it is a strange behavior. If I ping a server I get long "pong" every second or third "ping". In a 5G wifi this is hardly a problem, but in normal 2.4 I hardly can use the internet at all.

Now to my question.. do you think waiting for an updated version is a good idea or shall I also break my new case (T-T *sad noises*) and change to an intel card? If so do you know a good one that I can get?

My specs: https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=70bf652ec8

Thank you so much for everyone that takes the time to answer <3

I'm trying to set my keyboard layout. Command "setxkbmap -query" returns layout as "us". "sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration" to "br" makes no effect. I can't figure what is the effective mode to change that, due to GNOME settings also is configured to "br" layout.

Hi everyone !

After I resized and moved partitions with GParted, my Debian 11 (aarch64) takes 2min to boot. When I fire up the OS, the bootloader menu is displayed. Then it starts to boot but I have to wait 2min with a black screen with a blinking cursor before I can get to the login manager.

I noticed I got this since I used GParted to increase the size of the main partition. I also had to delete and create again the swap partition to do so.

Anyone has an idea about what's going on ?

PS : I dont know if it's important but I'm using a Debian VM with UTM on a Mac with an ARM chip.

Hi!

I have a VPS server running nextcloud on debian. For some reason, it becomes really slow and unresponsive every 3-4 days and I have to (hard) reboot it from my provider's webinterface.

Last time that happened I managed to log in before it died completely and found a lot of processes that should not be there.

Here is the heavily edited and commented output of ps aux on the server just before I had to reboot it:

USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND
# main suspect: the cron job

I really don't know what's going on.

Both the mariadb database and nextcloud data partition are on LUKS encrypted LVM containers, formatted with ext4. Maybe some interference here?

Hello people, I am one of the maintainers of Amber-lang and with the latest release now there is also the debian package.

For who doesn't know Amber is a Bash transpiler with a custom scripting language, it is still in alpha but in the last 8 months the project improved a lot and we are working a lot.

I am here not just for promotion but for suggestions to put online a Amber (semi-)official repository that I will maintain on my personal server.

I was thinking that at every new release I will download the deb generated by the GitHub CI we have but I was thinking about how to put a Debian repository online, maybe there is some tool that based on a package automatically generate one and that is easy to update.

I was messing around with apt 2.9.17 to see what they're up to, that was fine, but I removed the version that comes with Bookworm 12 (apt.2.6.1).

When I wanted to reinstall, which I did by downloading it from the Debian FPT server and installed it with dpkg now when I update or try to, instead of pointing to /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/ it points to /usr/local/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/

Why did that happen?

Is that normal?

Hi all, I have an eGPU that I want to use with my laptop. My laptop has an integrated Intel graphics card. Everything works perfectly fine with the Intel card and my desktop without the use of the eGPU.

However, after I installed the Nvidia driver via "nvidia-driver firmware-misc-nonfree", my applications lag and delay in loading. I do not have the eGPU plugged in when this happens, and I rebooted with the eGPU unplugged to be sure that it wasn't accessible either. Though, even with it plugged in this still happens. When I install the Nvidia drivers the nouveau driver is removed.

In the first video, you can see the graphical distortion and the time it takes to load Chrome (over 10 seconds). And the second video shows how quickly Chrome loads when I uninstall the Nvidia drivers and use nouveau again without the eGPU:

I am on Debian 12.

I have been trying to get debian on my hp proliant dl380 gen7, but this error code "failure trying to run: chroot "/target" dpkg --force-depends --install /var/cache/apt/archives/libc6_2.36-9+deb12u9_amd64.deb" keeps showing up when I try to install base system.

On debian trixie, arrow keys puts ABCandD on vim when in insert mode.

This is an error I should look for solutions on debian or vim forums?

Figured I'd start off the new year with a new distro; been a long time since I've been on Debian and it's nice to be back and check it out.

Hi Team

I decided to reinstall Debian today as i wanted a minimal KDE setup on my T14 gen 1. I fixed my usual dummy audio by doing this:

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/inteldsp.conf

Copy into file: options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=1

Save & Reboot

However the Mic whilst being detected and im able to turn on/off is not working and doesn't pic up any sound.
