Trump 2026 trial date in election case should be rejected, prosecutors argue

Special counsel prosecutors urged the US district court judge Tanya Chutkan to ignore Trump’s ‘skewed’ statistics

Special counsel prosecutors sharply objected on Monday to Donald Trump’s request for an April 2026 trial date in the case involving his efforts to subvert the 2020 election results, arguing his lawyers’ reasons were disingenuous and denied the American public’s right to a speedy trial.

The six-page court filing took particular issue with how the former US president’s legal team used flawed statistics to apparently settle on having a trial take place three years after he was charged with four felony counts in August for conspiring to return himself to office.

It looks like the Pixel Watch 2 may not be the only wearable that Google launches this fall. A new FCC filing for what appears to be a Fitbit tracker also surfaced today. The question is which one, and what does that say about where Fitbit stands?

In the FCC filing, the product is listed as a “Google LLC Wireless Device G3MP5” but doesn’t appear to have anything but Bluetooth connectivity. And while there are no pictures, 9to5Google points outthat the device’s e-label will be located in an app via “Settings > Device > Info > Regulatory Info.” That lines up with Fitbit’s previous trackers.

While there have been a ton of Pixel Watch 2 leaks and rumors recently, it’s been quiet on the Fitbit front, so it’s unclear as to which Fitbit...

The biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, a contender for the Republican presidential nomination, was condemned for conspiracy-tinged remarks about the events of 9/11 and the January 6 attack on the Capitol.

“I think it is legitimate to say how many police, how many federal agents, were on the planes that hit the Twin Towers,” Ramaswamy said, in a profile published by the Atlantic on Monday.

Australia news live: economic growth to slow; China says Aukus revives a ‘cold war mentality’

The intergenerational report will this week predict more sluggish times ahead, while Beijing renews its attack over the submarine deal. Follow live

Good morning and welcome to our rolling news coverage. I’m Martin Farrer and here are some of our top stories this morning before my colleague Emily Wind settles in to take you through the rest of the day.

Our latest snapshot of public opinion will keep the cost of living at the top of the national agenda today with the survey showing more than three-quarters of voters think tenants should be helped out with a freeze or cap on rents. Three in four Australians believe rents should either be capped to inflation or frozen until economic conditions improve, according to our new Essential poll. The housing tussle between Labor and the Greens has not impacted Anthony Albanese’s popularity, with 37% still feeling positive about the prime minister.

Controversial country song Rich Men North of Richmond makes US chart history

Oliver Anthony has becomes the first to top the Billboard Hot 100 with no prior chart history, for a song which has drawn backlash for its stereotypes of welfare recipients

Oliver Anthony’s Rich Men North of Richmond, the out-of-nowhere country song that went viral earlier this month, has debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making him the first artist to ever notch a top single with no prior chart history in any form.

The song, which Anthony says is the first he ever recorded with a professional microphone, was widely shared online along with a video of bearded, Virginia-based singer playing an acoustic guitar in the woods. The song was streamed 17.5m times during the week ending 17 August, and a video of Anthony’s performance posted by the channel RadioWV has racked up 30 million views in 12 days.

3D eye scans at opticians could identify those at risk of Parkinson’s, study finds

People with high chance of developing disease could be warned up to seven years before symptoms appear, research indicates

3D eye scans widely used in high street opticians could help to identify people at high risk of developing Parkinson’s disease up to seven years before they have symptoms, data has suggested.

The finding added to growing evidence that the use of eye scan data could help to detect neurodegenerative diseases and followed recent studies suggesting that the technique could help to identify early signs of Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis and schizophrenia. This emerging field of research, known as “occulomics”, is also being investigated as a means of identifying individuals with a propensity for cardiovascular disease or diabetes.

‘Holy crap’: Ted Cruz duped by fake image of shark on flooded LA highway

Texas senator falls for one of the oldest internet hoaxes after sharing image online that has ‘been circulated several times over’

The Texas US senator Ted Cruz, a former candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, appeared Monday to fall for one of the oldest internet hoaxes, sharing a supposed picture of a shark on a flooded highway in Los Angeles with the remark: “Holy crap.”

California does indeed face potentially catastrophic flooding thanks to Storm Hilary but users of X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, were swift to point out that the image Cruz reposted is in fact wholly crap.

Inquiry into King’s charity ‘would have offended important people’

MP who first called for inquiry says he is not surprised the Metropolitan police have decided to take no further action

Asked about the Metropolitan police decision to take no further action in the cash-for-honours allegation involving King Charles’s Prince’s Foundation, the author and former Liberal Democrat MP Norman Baker said wearily: “I’m not actually surprised. To have taken action would have offended important people in society.”

Baker, the author of the 2019 critique of the royal family, And What Do You Do?, wrote to the Met in 2021 calling for an investigation after press reports emerged that a long-time senior aide of the then-Prince Charles had offered a Saudi billionaire (and donor to causes close to the King’s heart) help to secure a knighthood and UK citizenship in return for donations.

Samsung’s latest pitch for the Z Fold 5: two iPhones at the same time

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 unfolded on a table showing two apps running side by side.

Imagine if this were two iPhones in a trench coat. | Photo by Allison Johnson / The Verge

Hey, wait a minute, that Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is actually just two iPhones in a trench coat!

That’s the idea behind the latest update to the Try Galaxy web app, which, when running on two iPhones, offers a Samsung One UI demonstration spread across both screens. Samsung says it lets iOS users try out the foldable’s benefits, like watching content on an “immersive” screen, or sample productivity features like dragging and dropping across both screens thanks to its multitasking abilities — something the iPhone could use work on.

To make it happen, you just have to visit the website or scan a QR code on two iPhones, add the web app to your homescreen, and then tape them together (the tape is my own recommendation) to start folding to...
