Gushing over Magical Girls sold 8.114 BD's in it's first week. That makes it the highest-selling anime of Winter 2024, surpassing even Frieren's BD sales.

A second season is guaranteed at this point.

I don't think I've seen one of these threads in a minute, so why not? shrug-outta-hecks

Here's what I've had going on -

Completed:

Good:

Giant Robo: the Day the Earth Stood Still - Great OVA! I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys G Gundam since the first few episodes of this essentially helped Imagawa get the job as the first non-Tomino TV Gundam showrunner. From what I know, they didn't license the actual stories from the manga, so Imagawa and crew made shit up whole cloth and use characters from miscellaneous Yokoyama manga. It gives it this really manic energy when guys with random super powers and Romance of the Three Kingdoms characters are all fighting each other like a kid playing with a box of their parents old toys. Very light on actual robot fights, but the animation is gorgeous.

Getter Robo: Armageddon - More 90s super robots. I didn't like it as much as Giant Robo, but this goes pretty hard and was enjoyably edgy as fuck.

Rose of Versailles - Delightful 70s classic. It has me wanting to watch more Dezaki stuff - maybe Space Adventure Cobra will work its way in soon.

OK:

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Season 2 - Wasn't bad, but it just didn't have enough to interest me.

.hack//Sign - This was a favorite of mine back in the old days. It's good for an advertisement/prelude for the PS2 games, but I don't think I would recommend it otherwise. I also watched the Intermezzo and Unison OVAs - they're eh.

Kill La Kill - I watched this on a whim after watching Cutie Honey (1973). It's not bad, it's just not really my thing.

Musha Knight Commando: SD Gundam Scramble - Probably cool if you were like 10 in Japan in the early 90s. vivian-shrug

Bad:

Cross Ange - Please check CWs before considering this, but wow is this an interesting train wreck of a show.

Ongoing:

Legend of the Galactic Heroes - 30/110 so far. Still liking it a lot, but I'm just slowly working my way through this one. I couldn't imagine binging through it.

Like as of the latest book to be translated to english Akari and Menou's relationship has basically been (spoilers)Akari: *actively declares undying love and attraction towards Menou, constantly*

Menou: blob-no-thoughts

Akari: *actively conspires to die in the hopes of saving Menou's life, while burning her literal soul as fuel to keep a three month timeloop going for an unknown number of years in the hopes of finding an iteration where Menou lives* (corny as that sounds, the gradual reveal that that's what was happening was great)

Menou: blob-no-thoughts

Akari and Menou: *merge their literal souls together, becoming one singular being split between two bodies, in language that's explicitly romantic and euphemistic*

Menou: blob-no-thoughts "I made a friend."

Akari: *gets mind-wiped by the original Menou, Hakua, who is both the literal god of the world's main religion and so madly infatuated with Akari that she betrayed and murdered every other friend she ever had, waited a thousand years, and plotted to kill an entire world just in the hopes of being reunited with Akari*

Menou: blob-no-thoughts "I must kill god, alter the basic mechanical rules of this world, and save my friend. Then I will spend my life with her and hold her hand, as is normal for friends."

I want to scream. meow-knife-trans

Still a shame the anime never got picked up for another season.

Tfw you get into an anime with only one or maybe two seasons

The story is incomplete.

The last season was a decade ago or more, a new season has become a running joke among people who like it too.

The manga is there, but it's unfinished and progresses at a glacial pace.

I'm talking of course about Kaiji, but the show from the picture is also a victim (Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-Kun). Something like Interviews with Monster Girls at least has the manga be complete, even if you can read the last volume only in Spanish if you don't speak Japanese.

Alas, big booba waifu shows with the level 99 elves, a wish fulfillment loser to gigachad main character will be more profitable, helping self-reinforce the unsavory parts of weeb culture. :)

It used to be common for foreign TV shows and movies to get localized titles, and dammit, I think that those titles had a lot of charm. So I'm bringing them back myself!

Some of these are "full" titles, some of these are more meant to be subtitles that come after the original title; some of these are more literal translations while others are more evocative and often groansome localizations; some of these are popular anime, some are less popular. Regardless, I hope I have at least achieved the aesthetic of an eyeroll-worthy second-hand video cassette box from Norway in the 1990s.

How many of these my favorite concoctions can you recognize? Maybe you can see a familiar name here or there, maybe a cognate, maybe that's not enough and you need to ask me to provide a translation/explanation/cognates. It'll be interesting to see how it goes.

So without further ado, break a leg:

  • Av to planeter og ett hjerte
  • Bestilte du en hare?
  • Celler i arbeid!
  • Drømmer ninjajenter om ninjamenn?
  • En brud i fem deler
  • Fandens nabojente
  • Forlovet til den ukjente
  • Hverdagsliv
  • Kjærlighet, direktesendt!
  • Kjærlighet, fjortis-syndrom og andre vrangforestillinger
  • Komis kommunikasjonsvansker
  • Min haleløs mester
  • Min "lutesøster" Umaru
  • MoRo-byrået
  • Pupper eller ei, kan jeg slå deg!
  • På lørdagsgodt og søndagsvondt
  • Retts-Saks-Papir
  • Senko med reverompa
  • Solskinn-skisse
  • Spøkelsesfortellinger
  • Stridsvogner kjørt i skjørt
  • Søtt uansett, eller, "Jeg elsker deg til månen og tilbake!"

I guess I'll reveal all the correct answers at the end of the day if they haven't all been guessed by then...

Edit:

Correct answers in order

  • Stardust Telepath
  • Is The Order a Rabbit?
  • Cells at Work!
  • In The Heart of Kunoichi Tsubaki
  • The Quintessential Quintuplets
  • The Demon Girl Next Door
  • Engaged to the Unidentified

This comes with some sad news, though. Apparently this is from a fireworks/drone show for the last day of the life-sized gundam robot in Yokohama, which is being taken down.

One can find a few things on Archive.org and Netflix, and one can find a few very short fan-made dubs (fandubs) on YouTube, but as a whole there isn't a lot that's easy to find. The Norwegian Dubs Wikia (Norske Dubber Wiki) has many anime that I can't find on any of the three aforementioned services.

But as said, even Norwegian subs is good enough for me. I just want to reduce my reliance on the English language, so that I can improve my Norwegian and improve my Japanese simultaneously. Of course, I could make the subtitles myself and share them, if nobody else has done this work already — I'm just scared that I'd make a lot of grammatical mistakes (according to other people, at least). If I had a proofreader this maybe wouldn't be a problem...

Like as far as writing quality in general, art, characters, etc it's all quite good, but the whole "dungeon ecology" stuff being retconned away with "actually it's all eldritch horror wish magic so all that monster ecology stuff is fake bullshit that doesn't matter" kind of sucked as a core plot point, as was downgrading the dungeon lord from "scary ancient mage who knew how to make such a big and complex dungeon" to "just some dumbass who didn't understand the most basic things, and it was all just eldritch horror wish magic doing the heavy lifting." Making a core point of the wish magic "greed and cruelty are harmless and normal, but wanting to improve the material conditions of others? That's a serious moral hazard that feeds a world eating demon!" is some peak liberal bullshit, too.

Also I hate the narrative device of "this arc has reached it's climax and finished and we've wound it all down now, time to move on to the next-PSYCH lmao I take it back it's not done I'm undoing it now it's still on we're still doing the thing that just finished lol" because it's lazy and ruins tension and pacing compared to just finding some better way to segue into a new arc. Especially since it doesn't even really do much of anything with the retcon, and it was practically just an excuse to get rid of the timer they had and replace it with a different one they didn't know about.

Apart from those things it was all good enough, though.

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, the people demanded more Sailor Moon, and so, we’re continuing on, with episodes 73 through 78 of the 1992 series, the definitive magical-girl anime. This is the completely unabridged, unexpurgated, uncensored, Japanese version of the show, including everything that the English dub butchered, altered, and/or cut, which is quite a bit. Tonight’s episodes see the continuation of the Black Moon Clan arc, including a two-part showdown with clan ringleader Rubeus, and the debut of Sailor Pluto.

After that is Alice (1988), a Czech stop-motion fairy tale that asks, “What if Alice in Wonderland was a little…twisted?” It reimagines the tale into a creepy dark fantasy full of unsettling imagery (though nothing R-rated) and spooky situations. It is generally considered the magnum opus of animator Jan Svankmajer, and is his best-known work, as well as one of the most famous animated films from the Eastern Bloc.

We’ll start 8PM EST on Hextube, right here: https://live.hexbear.net/c/movies

Be there, comrades!
