In the past few years I've noticed a marked increase of pop songs and dance songs taking a melody of a famous song and using that same melody to make a new song. New lyrics, etc.

Recent examples include "All In" by YouNotUs & Laurel, which uses the same melody as "All That She Wants" by Ace of Base, and Bebe Rexha's "I'm Good (Blue)", which uses the same melody as "I'm Blue" by Eiffel 65.

My question is, what are these? Is there a term for them? Wikipedia simply calls "I'm Good (Blue)" as a "reworking" of the Eiffel 65 track. Is that what you'd say they are, a reworking?

Like if you say "Have you heard Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt?" you could also say "Have you heard Bebe Rexha's reworking of I'm Blue?"

I feel like this is a very new phenomenon in pop music. I would say they were the exception before the 2020s whereas now they seem to be becoming the norm and not that rare.

Is there an explanation for this trend? Lack of imagination or cashing in on retro nostalgia?

Edit: Interpolation! Thank you reddit. One user says it goes way back, and I'm sure it does, but I still feel in terms of pop music and chart music, we're hearing a lot more of it than we did a few years ago.

It was a remake of Journey- Don’t stop believing but remade and the guy was rapping. Something about giggling in bed they smoked marijuana and something about naming their baby’s. I heard this song back in 2006-07 and thought about it the other day and can’t for the life of me find.

There are way too many songs that bring me a sense of "pain." It's not bad pain because I usually associated good memories to these songs. But it kind of "hurts" to listen to them and i often shut them off after a few moments. They bring back too many memories: riding the bus in the early dark of the morning on my way to school, hanging out with friends from high school or uni I no longer speak with, long drives, past romantic partners, get togethers with friends or family members no long in my life, etc etc etc...

Hey there, i just wanted to get someone’s advice on something regarding Record Labels. Recently I started posting on tik tok about my singing covers. I’ve built a fan base with about 22.3k followers, 1.6M likes overall, and recently I had a viral video of 10M views and shouted out on YouTube by the recording artist himself.

I recently received an email the other day with the subject: “(my name) x Atlantic Records”. Immediately I thought it must be someone pulling my leg but it turns out it wasn’t. It was an A&R director reaching out to me asking for a meeting with me and my parents (as I’m 15) and wanting to discuss my plans with music as a whole. The meeting is arranged for this coming Saturday.

What should I expect from this interview? Should I mention how I want to record originals and realse an EP?? Is this a big thing as this is my first email from my business account?
