Hey everyone! As we wind down the new year I just thought I’d share the movies I saw this year, in the hopes a fun discussion could come up/other people could share their rankings. Also any recommendations for good films I missed are always welcome! 2024 was a brilliant year for movies and I’m really thankful to have seen a lot in theatres. Not all of these I saw in theaters, but I’d say about 75% I did. Go to the theater!!!

Please note that these rankings are my own, and while disagreeing with my order is fine, being a douchebag about why you disagree is not

It was so awful. Basically a 2 hour trailer to set up the TV show. I bought tickets mainly because I was interested in the sweepstakes, and the trailer looked like something right up my alley (I love anything post apocalypse) but what a waste of 2 hours.

The setup didn't make any sense (two random dudes in a fishing boat can set off a nuke inside of random barrels? Then Russia takes out our entire electric grid?)

The only conflict was: oh our food might run out in months, what will we ever do? And a swat team that randomly showed up because of a corrupt government official that needs his taxes! (Who, after all brief shootout, decides to just leave?)

I actually do like the message that them letting in the """refugees""" in (basically just their neighbors outside their gate) was ultimately beneficial to them, but that's going to piss their target off so much that actually might be kinda funny.

Then it wraps up with basically a trailer for a show that is streaming now and a QR code to "pay it forward" (buy more tickets for other people)

I can't be the first to bring this up. Dwayne Johnson is killer at kids movies. Jason Momoa is amazing at kids movies. Jack Black is amazing at kids movies.

The new Minecraft movie with Black and Momoa got me to think what an amazing cast it would be for all 3! Where do I post to try to make this happen!? Long shot for sure, but any chance I have I want to take!

In Terminator 2, after saving Sarah they decide they can stop Skynet from ever being built. The T-800 obviously has very detailed files on the original creator Miles Dyson. After hiding out in Mexico, and getting some Weapons Sarah had hidden. Sarah after having her reoccurring nightmare sets off to Kill Miles Dyson. While she does come close, the T-800 and John arrive and show Mile's why he cannot keep working on Skynet. He helps Sarah, John, T-800 destroy Skynet and all his work. We finally see the T-1000 again and he's at Miles Dyson home but he's a little late. My question is why did the T-1000 go To Mile's Dyson's home so late or at all? Did he figure Sarah/John may head there to Kill Miles? Was he trying to protect him? Why not go there right after he lost The trio at the Hospital? After the hospital he just kind of gives up for awhile, which isn't something a Terminator is supposed to do.

It doesn’t make any sense. He was nice to her and interested in her research. None of it made sense and she was probably just confused but how did she come to the conclusion that he was mocking her.

People said she was insecure and assumed she got made fun of it in the past. But why would people make fun of her for that???

That part just never made sense to me

In Terminator 2, A good T-800 is sent back and a T-1000 is sent back to Kill John. Now dark fate kind of answered this. But I like to pretend that doesn't exist. So here's my question, if the T-1000 had Killed John what would the T-800, T-1000 have done then? Would they keep fighting each other? Would the T-1000 ignore the T-800? I've always assumed they T-1000 had other targets that weren't it's primary objective. Skynet likely would've wanted to be sure no resistance leaders survived.

Hey all! I saw the trailer for a forbidden romance type of movie a few months ago, and just today remembered that I wanted to watch it. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of it. The two kids are teenagers and their parents don't want them to date. It had sort of an indie / A24 vibe? Hoping someone knows what I'm talking about. Thanks!

I know this is not the best sub to make vent posts, and this'll seem pretty stupid and pointless to write about, but I just want to get this off my chest. Now we all know how we feel about advertisements. Yes, it has a purpose in generating revenue for the theaters themselves, and I know it's not a new things to show pre-show ads on the big screen (i.e. "Let's all go to the lobby!") but it's just feels so immersion-breaking to see ads before a movie. Thankfully, at least they don't include them in-between like those free streaming services do and just let the whole movie play out uninterrupted from start to finish, but still.

I remember recently seeing an IMAX 70mm screening of Interstellar for its 10th anniversary, and was relieved to see no ads or trailers play beforehand. The auditorium was dim, music was playing from the background, and then it goes dark. Only the IMAX logo is shown and the movie immediately starts, beginning on its intended showtime. That's it. Same thing happened when I saw Oppenheimer on the format as well. No actors in front of a green screen thanking you for watching the movie they're in. No trailers spoiling everything. Nothing. Again, I know most people won't care about this. Just something I wanted to write on here out of boredom lol.

EDIT: Uh-oh looks like I've started shit. I don't know what I expected. But then again, what else could you expect from this sub?

In War of the Worlds staring Tom Curise, the main characters steal a mini van that a mechanic has recently fixed. The Aliens shutdown down all power and modern Vehicles just before invading. As such working Cars are rare, the characters find themselves driving through a large crowd of survivors. The survivors quickly take note of the working car, and want to get inside. As it becomes obvious the main characters aren't going to stop, they try and take the car by any means necessary. After being Pulled out, The characters are forced to give up the car. We see people literally killing each other for the car. The crowd is unfazed by the killing, and continue to fight over the car as an unseen person drives it away. I actually have two questions. What do you think happened to the car, after it was driven off screen? Was it destroyed by aliens, or did people keep fighting over it until it just stopped working all together? Also why is Tom Cruises character crying over the loss of the vehicle? Does he feel like he's failed his family, or was it because they came super close to dying? 🤔

I love Ceylan's movies and I liked this one too. But it's driving me crazy!! Why did he break the fourth wall? I'm mystified. I've read everything I can find on the film and no one seems to have a good theory. Ideas?

All I can think is that it happens at the absolute peak of dramatic tension, when the character is about to go past the point of no return into evilness. But I still don't know what it means or why the director would make that choice.

Context, Carriers is a 2009 post apocalyptic Horror thriller. The flim takes place after a deadly virus has wiped out most of the population worldwide. 4 young Adults, one of them being played by Chris Pine are looking for a safe haven to wait for the vrius to burn out. The post apocalyptic road trip proves to be more dangerous then expected. The movie was flimed in 2006, but got released following Pine's role in Star Trek 2009. It had a limited theater release, i saw the movie on DVD in late 2009. And watched it again following the 2020 pandemic. My friend said he saw the movie in theaters back in 2009, and remembers the following scene. Chris Pines character talks about people dying on a mass scale in the first couple weeks of the pandemic. My friend says the movie had a flashback of bodies being dumped into a football stadium. The stadium was already full, but more body bags were being Dropped into this mass grave. Chris Pines character is seen in a Hasmazt suit, Pulling body bags off the truck. We apparently see more trucks bringing more bodies to the stadium in the background. Chris Pine says, he did this until the people paying him succumbed to the vrius as well. And there was simply not enough living people left to keep picking up bodies. I looked online and did find a few alternate scenes not in the normal movie. But I cannot find this scene, or any proof it exists anywhere. But my friend went into extraordinary detail about the scene. Is it possible the theater played a longer version, then the DVD cut?

First time writer, long time loiterer (LMAO)

Does anyone else keep a list of movies they've watched, when they''ve watched them or even rank them in a spreadsheet? I do that, and I have autism, so I don't know if that's why I do it, but I definitely do. I have all of the movies I've seen ranked in a spreadsheet and I track how many movies of each actor/actress, writer, director just to see how many movies of each person that I've seen. I also sort them out by year and genre. I currently have a Google Spreadsheet where I have ranked all 1500+ movies and 250+ TV shows that Ive seen and they are ranked from best to worst. It's something that I've been doing for years and I don't know why it started, but it's been a thing of mine for like 5-6 years. I also have separate sheets for production companies, documentaries, tv show writers, networks, etc.

What this has done for me is let me know essentially whether a movie will be good or not depending on the cast/crew/production companies. Now this isn't a fool proof system or anything like that, however, I like to have an answer to "what is your favorite movie" or "who is your favorite actor".

So, all this to say that I am just wondering if anyone else does this or if I'm just a loser haha. It used to be embarassing to have someone see it or even know about it but at this point, I don't care lol. If you judge me for it, whatever, I'm autistic, I have ADHD and I'm on anti-depressants, not much you can say that I haven't already heard. I do my ratings on IMDB but I"m considering heading to Rotten Tomatoes because I've heard that's a better rating site but not too sure. Can't wait to see what everyone has to say!

Thanks for reading!

It's very hard to root for Daniel in these three movies, especially the original and the 3rd movie. Part 2, I thought he was okay, he was helping Miyagi (though he could have paid for his own ticket. Just saying!), he was cool and friendly and I thought Chozen was being a dick for no reason. I even liked Daniel and Kumiko together and I was disappointed he and Kumiko weren't married on Cobra Kai. Daniel left Kumiko on good terms.

I still think Daniel wasn't bullied on the first movie. The Cobra Kai boys only attacked Daniel when Daniel did something to them, it wasn't as if he was being beat up for no reason. When Daniel kept his distance from Ali or wasn't trying to be a tough guy, Johnny left him alone. Johnny did go too far with the beating at the alley, even if Daniel provoked them.

In Part III, is where Daniel lost me. He was always bitchy and whiny but in Part III, I couldn't stand him. Always complaining, he treated Miyagi like crap because Miyagi wouldn't train him into knowing more deadlier movies, being fooled by Terry Silver and then getting his ass beat up by Mike Barnes. At that stage, Daniel shouldn't be a scaredy cat but he was still acting like one. Not to mention, not going to college and being a parasite in Miyagi's home where he was living.

It's an amazing, accidental work of art. A mindblowingly stupid, entertaining total blunder of a movie. The choices in the dialogue and plot are epically dumb in the best possible way, and it's all dead serious. There's not a single attempt at comedy or comic relief. All purely unintentional. It's up there with stuff like Anaconda or Ewe Boll movies, but somehow even better. The whole movie, you're just like: Wait.. noooo, they're not seriously. Yep! Wow. How could they have decided to go with that line?! We were blown away with entertainment from start to finish, but it IS a bad movie at the end of the day. The only downside is it leaves you wishing you could watch it for the first time again. Not much re-watching value.

It made us think a lot about what constitutes a so-bad-it's-good movie. I think the only rule is: You can't try to make one on purpose, like these corporate, faux-meta wink-wink, fake it's-so-bad-it's-good movies of today. The 80's and 90's are peppered with great ones, but I think the early 2000's were the apex. It's so embarrassing and hilarious what audiences thought was cool back then

There has been some talk about Dwayne Johnson's movie career and his acting ability, with a lot of people saying that plays the same character. A meme went viral about how if he is in a movie that people will skip it. What do you think about all this? Would it be better if Dwayne Johnson stops acting altogether?

i have seen sasquatch and the legend of boggy creek (i still dont understand if its a documentary with reenactments or a fictional found footage film)

Just rewatched Becky and have been appreciating an Amanda Brugel moment since. When she tells the nazis that there's no point in her asking Becky to do something because she's "as strong-willed and vindictive as they come".

It's just one part of a sentence of dialogue but her line-read really helps sell the entire movie imo. The way she hits "vindictive" about a 13 year old girl who's dad was just tortured and murdered is absolutely venomous and injects some gravity to Becky we may have been hedging before due to her being a little girl.

I already liked the movie and already had big love for Amanda Brugel (Pastor Nina anyone?) but just wanted to shout out this little detail that made a big tonal difference. Skilled acting choice and execution!

Directed by the Taviani brothers, this is the story of a Sardinian peasant boy who manages to escape a moral and intellectual death by joining the Army. A beautifully structured Bildungsroman (Bildungskino?), i found it so satisfying. My favorite sequence is where SPOILERS!

You hear him pronouncing new words as he learns them, with the words beginning as material nouns (tools and other objects) and ending as abstract, philosophical and moral categories.
