Ok, so hear me out....

For years I have cringed my way through this holiday classic. I cannot for the life of me understand how/why Jack Black was cast for this character. He is a notorious over-actor, he is absolutely not going to pull both a hot young actress and the smoke show that is Kate Winslet, and the more appropriate casting WAS ALREADY IN THE FILM with John Krasinski playing Ben (the Jr Editor.)

The only reason I can think JB was put into this role is his musical acumen, but even then the big music scene where he and Kate are listing to Arthur's theme music he's goofing off. Completely manageable by another moderately capable actor.

Am I wrong here???

I've seen several movie adaptations of The Nutcracker, and have always found the story to be quite captivating, first published as the short story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E. T. A. Hoffman in 1816, and later retold in 1844 by Alexandre Dumas, whose version was adapted into a two-act classical ballet in 1892 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the music of which has become iconic and timeless.

I would love to see a great film adaptation of The Nutcracker, preferably one that incorporates Tchaikovsky's music, and stays fairly faithful to the original story.

In your opinion, what is the best movie version of The Nutcracker?

I don't know that I can add a lot to the title, but -- every once in a while, I've seen a movie that changed something in me. Even just something subtle. Pushed a boundary. Changed a long-held belief about what movies are capable of doing. Gave me a new perspective.

I've seen thousands of films in my life. I'm interested in seeing some that changed the way you personally looked at them -- preferably for the better.

I was interested in seeing the new Nosferatu adaptation since I heard of it a couple months ago. Following the film's rollout, including the trailer, and a post from PETA of all places, I've learned that rats play a role in the film, though I'm not sure how prominently...

The thing is, I have a pretty strong phobia of rats, which extends to depictions of them in photos and film. While I really want to see this movie, I know I won't be able to handle it if there are lots of rats throughout. One or two scenes I would likely be able to make do by closing my eyes and covering my ears. However, if they are present throughout the movie, popping up regularly and at unexpected times, it might be best for me to pass on this movie.

What I'm asking here, is for the people who have seen the movie, what are your thoughts on how prominently rats are featured in the film? Obviously, given the question, spoilers may be unavoidable, and I'm fine with that.

For some strange reason Guy Pearce’s career reminds me of 90s Gary Oldman where he just takes on roles that he likes and yet delivers solid performances. Ive been following Pearce’s career ever since The Count of Monte Cristo and Memento and so him being in discussion for Supporting Actor this year is just cool. His collaborations with John Hillcoat are absolutely brilliant. Although I havent watched The Brutalist yet, I’m very intrigued now and will definitely watch out for it.

With this, what is your favorite role of his and favorite film?

Just check out some of his filmography which showcases his range:

  • The Proposition (Him and John Hillcoat are magic)
  • Rover
  • Priscilla Queen of the Desert
  • LA Confidential
  • Memento
  • The Count of Monte Cristo
  • Animal Kingdom
  • The Time Machine
  • A Slipping Down Life
  • The Road
  • King’s Speech

If sequels generally try to recreate the magic of the original, I'm wondering if any go off piste and change the genre of the whole franchise?

I'm thinking less about sequels which ignore the original, or merely borrow the original's title for name recognition.

I'm wondering more about sequels which function as sequels but alter the focus enough to arguably change the genre? Perhaps by hyperfocusing upon one aspect or theme of the original?

I love movies and data, which is I started tracking every movie that I watched as a new years resolution on January 1st, 2019.

I rated each movie based on how entertaining it was in context of the genre(s) it was in. Then, I recorded the IMDB scores of each film after I had given my own score, and calculate a difference between my score and the IMDB score.

Some movies I watched in movie theaters, a lot I watched on Netflix, or Peacock, Hulu, Amazon, Paramount, YouTube (free with ads), and other streaming services. Before the pandemic, I used to go to the movie theater at least once a week. But now, I go about once a month, at most.

In total, I watched 1,113 movies. Looking at the number of movies per year, On average, I watched 185 movies per year. This comes out to about 15 movies per month, or about 1 movies every other day. There is an upward trend during the first two years of the pandemic.

This graph shows movies viewed per year.

The average rating rating that I gave to the movies that I watched was 6.76 / 10 (with a standard deviation of 1.6). The median rating was 7/10, and the mode rating was 7.5. On average, my ratings were 0.26/10 higher rating than IMDB ratings.

A frequency table of my movie ratings is provided below:

| My Rating | Frequency | Percent | |

| | 2 | 6 | 0.54 | | 2.5 | 6 | 0.54 | | 3 | 27 | 2.43 | | 3.5 | 15 | 1.35 | | 4 | 44 | 3.96 | | 4.5 | 34 | 3.06 | | 5 | 83 | 7.47 | | 5.5 | 36 | 3.24 | | 6 | 107 | 9.63 | | 6.5 | 119 | 10.71 | | 7 | 163 | 14.67 | | 7.5 | 167 | 15.03 | | 8 | 116 | 10.44 | | 8.5 | 93 | 8.37 | | 9 | 64 | 5.76 | | 9.5 | 20 | 1.8 | | 10 | 11 | 0.99 |

You can also view a histogram graph showing my ratings of movies over the past six years here:

Below are the movies that I have rated either a 10/10, or a 9.5 /10. Keep in mind that these are from movies that I have seen in the last six years, and there are many great movies that I have watched before 2019 which I have not watched again, which is why they may not be in my top rated list.

Below are my top rated movies per release year. I have seen many more films made per year the closer the year is to the present. So, for most years before 1976, I only watched one film from that year, if not none at all. At first, I thought to only include years in which I have seen at least five films (anything from 1977 or more recent), but I also thought it might be informative to share my ratings for some great older movies that I had discovered for myself. Therefore, I have excluded any movies from earlier years which were rated less than 6/10.

Lane is already losing his girlfriend, but buying her a tiny bear for Christmas doesn't help his case. She wanted one as big as her. And who could forget the reindeer coats? Everyone will be wearing them! Repeat after Ricky's Mother: "Christmas! Christmas!" Although, drinking a little highly flammable moonshine first may help sway you to my opinion.

Lastly, if you don't agree, I want my two dollars!!!

It really is a rare thing in film. At most, movies might have opening or closing narration, but I cant think of many other movies throughout the history of film that is fully narrated for the length of the film. And even more rare is for the narration to be done by the main character, usually its a disembodied storyteller. Deadpool is the last one I could remember but his narration makes sense as he is made to be a fourth-wall breaker. Even at that he didn't narrate his movies the whole way through.

Can you imagine any modern movie today with full narration in the vein of A Christmas Story? The character pretty much narrating what hos thoughts and actions were at the time that he is reciting this story?

What are your favorite movies with narration?

I’m not a huge fan of Christmas movies in general, but when you’re stuck with watching what the family wants I don’t have much say. We watched A Christmas Story, Die Hard, and Fred Clause in that order today.

I forgot how amazing the original Die Hard is, so grounded and claustrophobic. Really like the motif of Ode to Joy reoccurring and thought it was shot amazingly. But Fred Clause really had me laughing for some reason.

I have a very odd sense of humor, the entire movie has Looney Tunes sound effects through out that just made me burst out laughing. I thought there were also some really well written jokes.

The main story also hit my pretty hard, being an older brother with a more successful younger brother. The feeling of spite and love, I thought Vince Vaughn and Paul Giamatti gave great performances. John Michael Higgens always makes me laugh no matter what he’s in. Vaughn straight up calls Kevin Spacey creepy at one point and that also made me laugh pretty good, but then the awkwardness of explaining his situation to me family.

Overall I’d give it a 6.5 out of 10. A lot of the CGI was super noticeable, but for killing time on a holiday I was pretty enjoyed.

I was rather lukewarm on the Brosnan Bond era when I was younger, but over time I've come to view him as the best 007 after Connery. Craig embodies the ruthlessness of Bond, but takes him into territory that's too cold and remorseless. Craig is aided by the fact that the movies he was in were better made and had more relevance to the Bond narrative trajectory—Brosnan's films, released in that amorphous territory between the fall of the Soviet Union and the retreat into sullen, narcissistic reaction, had no compelling plot or arcs, but nevertheless entertain because the lead possessed the chops to make Bond his own...

Frank is only an assoiciate in the mob, a trusted and clealry special associate, but that's all he'd ever be. This is a far more common position than the guys Scorsese has shown in prior mob movies, and Frank's life reflects that. He doesn't have a sugar bowl full of coke in his bedroom, he doesn't own a yacht, his quality of life only marginally improves once he's killing and enforcing for a living.

Instead of Frank's 'protectiveness' for his family being deified in a heroic scene where he beats up the guy who attacked his girlfriend, instead he drags his daughter down to the store so she gets a good look at Frank breaking a guys hand just because he pushed a girl acting up. And of course he can hardly understand why his daughters want nothing to do with him as an old man, it's not just for killing Jimmy Hoffa as they suspect/knew he did, it's because as kids they could never tell him about a teacher who was being unfair or a bully because he'd probably just make them watch as he murdere them. The insane violence that's a part of his career doesn't make him seem strong to his kids, he looks scary and dangerous because he is.

And in the end what does his loyalty get him? Does he get what Vito Corleone got, dying peacefully at a ripe age surrounded by family and friends? No, he dies alone and forgotten because he murdered his friend for his boss, and he won't even tell his friend's kids what he did with the body even though there's nobody left to know he snitched. Frank gets a long lonely death because he was too shortsighted and ignorant to stay away from organized crime for his family's sake.

I got it mainly because it was filmed in my city and I generally like David Harbour. Holy moly did it exceed my expectations. Yknow how so many holiday themed movies don't do enough with the holiday specifics? This is not that.

It's like they made a point to inject christmassy elements everywhere they could. It's funny without being cringe. The violence, gore, and fighting it filmed expertly. The dialogue and acting is great. The score is SUPERB. Cinematography and editing is beautifully handled. Every character has something to do. I can't recommend it enough and it's now in the yearly Xmas rotation for sure.

If you like dark comedy action Xmas movies, do yourself a favour!

The way the movie brings you in from the first scene withh the Jeep chase and keeps you hooked the whole time. I must have seen The Goonies 50 times in my life....maybe more because as a kid i damn wore out that VHS.

But just even watching it today, it has so much movie magic that truly makes it special.

I know its a movie a lot of people connect with because we all watched it as kids but it truly is just an objectively good movie.

I respect the vibe of special agents Johnson & Johnson. Not a scene where they aren’t swinging dick badasses.

Just not giving any sort of fuck, shitting on cops, and yeehawing around in helicopter gunships to smoke terrorists and hostages because who wants to get bogged down in details?

Really sucked how it turned out for them.

Die Hard: Bruce Willis was 33 years old in 1988. This was way tougher than I expected, but I'd recast him with Daniel Kaluuya, who's the same age, has the same everyman quality, and has the same capacity for anger and intensity and "I don't want to be here"-ness. He's also one of the few actors I can see pulling off "yippee ki-yay, motherf****r."

Elf: I don't know if it's possible to recast Will Ferrell.

Hey all! I’m finally making time for a movie night (it’s been way too long!) and decided on diving into Playtime (Jacques Tati, 1967) then something else from the Criterion Channel.

I’m really into media analysis and love picking apart the subtleties of a film. If you’re a fan of deep film discussions, subtext, or just enjoy the magic of cinema, send me a msg! Would love to hear your thoughts or recommendations on either of these or any other classic films.
