I am looking to utilize an old computer as a Plex server and putting in 18 HDD at the max in a Fractal Meshify 2. Will have an old NVME or SSD for the OS boot drive. My motherboard has 6 slots I believe so I need a PCIE for additional 12 SATA connections.

Which PCIE should I look at. I was reading the LSI SAS 9300 utilized more power than others.

I was importing a folder that contained all of the files that I want inside it (let's call that folder that contained all of these files "Import All") that had roughly 137GB of files from one HDD (~900GB) to another (~1.86TB) because that folder is still missing a lot of files that I want to download in it and the former HDD just wasn't that big to continue downloading to it.

I was importing from the first HDD to the other until I clicked on cancel because importing from one external HDD directly to another external HDD was just extremely slow for me, I then imported that folder to my desktop and then continued importing to the other HDD (now there are 2 "Import All" folders). Most of the files aren't that big, the import size is so big because that's how they collectively amount in their sizes because there are just so many files in it.

Is there a way to identify the files that were potentially damaged (like probably scanning all of the files that are inside the "Import All" folder after I merged the two "Import All" folders into one folder)? And how do I fix the damaged files in case there are?

in my new-to-me Chenbro case (quite old; from 775-era) and my SATA drives do not spin up. The backplane gets it power over 2x 4-pin molex. So, will covering the first three pins of my drives solve the problem?

Hi everyone. I make some dwld using radarr and SABnzb using my NAS. Wondering if that could be any security issue. Might be silly but for example if there are virus files … ? In that case, what about recycling one of my old HD with Pi4 to do this ? Sounds like a smart idea or is it completely useless ? Thank you.

I currently own several external HDDs totalling 16 TB of storage (8 TB of content, 8 TB of backups). I’m running out of space, so I’m considering purchasing a NAS setup. Is it worth getting one as a photographer whose content grows at about 2 TB per year (+2 TB of backups)?

One option is to buy new storage for the NAS and convert the external HDDs to backup drives. The (much) cheaper alternative would be buying a new 2 TB or 4 TB external drive, but it’s getting unwieldy.

I could also go for an HDD bay setup, but I would be missing out on the backup functionality. What do you think?

Looking into the ORICO NS500U3 at the moment. The NAS setups from Synology seem 2-3 times the price for the same number of bays.

Hi everyone! I am a filmmaker and thus need lots of data, ideally all in the same storage unit. Im looking for an 8 or 12 bay RAID, ideally to make RAID 6 or 10. I dont need it to be NAS, just DAS. I was looking at Synology because I like that you could swap different types of drives and sizes, but they changed that and now you have to use their drives.

Hi,

I have a QNAP NAS with 3x WD100EZAZ 10TB drives shucked from their WD MyBook enclosure (WDBBGB0100HBK-NA).

I've just purchased a 14TB WD140EDGZ-11B2DA2 drive from eBay to use in the empty MyBook enclosure as a backup disk.

I connected the drive to the enclosure's USB-SATA board, formatted it ok on my Mac. SMART didn't work though (smartctl says "Operation not supported"), so I moved the drive into my QNAP NAS.

Recognized ok in the NAS, happy with SMART results, ran a SMART quick test. I was curious about the SED erase feature, so I went to try that but cancelled when I didn't know where to find the PSID.

Moved the drive back to the MyBook enclosure, started putting everything back together and .... the drive is no longer seen by the computer. It powers up fine, makes a few startup noises and then ... one click every 5 seconds, until it goes to sleep after a few minutes.

Moved it back again into the NAS, everything looks fine. SED says "Uninitialized", which apparently means it's disabled. I tried SED erase again, this time having figured out that the PSID is the 4 rows of 8 characters near the QR code : incorrect ! Tried 3 times, stopped there as I wouldn't want to lock the drive.

I'm stumped. Should the MyBook SATA/USB board that came with a 10TB drive also support the 14TB model or are they locked somehow ?

I don't have another HDD to try the enclosure with. I'm trying a SATA SSD right now and it doesn't see it either. The SSD works with an old USB-SATA adapter I have lying around + an ATX PSU. With the same setup, the 14TB HDD still doesn't show up though and still click every 5 seconds.

Any ideas ?

Seller mentioned he did have to replace the power connector on the PCB but says it isn't a full PCB swap. He offered a return it but this was a very low hours drive and I'd like to make it work if possible and save us the hassle.

Why/problem: I'm now looking for a main external drive to edit off of and to have access to see all of my files. I ended up at a DAS because the speeds for NAS's were not good enough to do this.

Who: I'm mainly a photographer and sometimes video editor - speed needed.

Where: I have back ups of my files to a few offsite hard drives - so no worries on thinking that I think this is a back up solution. What I'm asking for is a DAS recommendation.

As a side question - does anyone know what happens when a DAS is set in RAID1 and one drive fails? Unlike a NAS that can rebuild itself, what actually happens with a DAS? I've heard horror stories of a drive failing and it taking out the whole system because you can't get another DAS to read the remaining drive (as it would need to be formatted). Maybe I'm mis informed. This seems to be a problem with the Sandisk model.

I'm stuck between these RAID options - does anyone have any recommendations?

Hey peeps! I hope yall doing just fine!

I'm about to buy my first ever HDD and I've been eyeing this 1tb LasCie Portable HDD. Is it a very reliable HDD? Do you guys have any issues with it or bad experience? If so, what other portable HDD's you recommend? If you would want to recommend anything I am looking in particular of preserving and storing my files.

FYI, I have 3 choices that I think is a solid choice and I've also done a research and I concluded to go for LasCie.

My options are:

1. LasCie HDD
2. T7 Samsung Shield SSD
3. Sandisk (V2) SSD

But I've been having a second thoughts lately because I've read other redditors non-so good comments about their experience on LasCie.

Hello guys, this is my first post on this forum. I'm seeking 2024 hands-on accounts of working with M-Discs and such. If the personal-context stuff in curly brackets seems irrelevant, please skip it.

{I'm downsizing and attempting to reorganize my personal archive, which extends over 40 years of IT involvement and comprises many different formats. My objective is to transfer the contents of all my old media to easily-accessible long-term storage. I *may* add to the archive in the coming years but this is basically a one-shot exercise. I need a solution that I can deploy now that will enable access for the next few decades.}

After a lot of reading, some of it on this Reddit, I settled on the M-Disc format. This promises desktop recording and long-term integrity.

I bought a Verbatim 43888 drive, the one with Pioneer internals, which seems to offer reasonable performance and M-Disc compatibility at a reasonable price.

Having heard of problems with Verbatim M-Discs, I tried to source Ritek M-Discs from overseas. No luck, and the difficulty I had obtaining the other brand prompted me to go back to my research.

I turned up some letters which said that, while M-Disc DVDs offer particular advantages over the standard ones, M-Disc Blu-rays are not substantially different from their non-M-Disc counterparts.

I'm pretty happy with the Verbatim 43888, and I'd like to use Blu-ray rather than DVD. Should I try to source the Ritek Blu-ray M-Discs, or would I get multi-decade performance with standard BD-Rs? Any and all perspectives gratefully recd.

Hi all, I’m looking for a new HDD to basically store all of my photos and videos that I’ve taken over the past year (I started last year). Currently, I have a T7 shield 1TB but is currently filled to the brim with ~250gb of games and the rest being photos and videos. I use a Macbook Pro so I’m not sure if that will affect anything. I just started looking for a new HDD a few days ago, and have gotten that I should be targeting for a CMR drive. However, I can’t find any external CMR drives that are within my budget (~200SGD). I have found quite a few CMR drives but they are internal and I really don’t know if I should be getting internal or external. I will not be moving my hdd around that much, probably just on my table that I can just connect to my Mac and disconnect when I want to move my Mac around, so its fine if its in the form factor of 3.5” or as big as an 8tb Seagate expansion (I didn’t want to consider that as I heard its SMR). Also I’m not sure what drive to be looking at, but ideally 4-8TB and within my budget. I will move my photos and videos to the hdd, and edit with the T7. Please give any recommendations for external drives, or an internal drive and enclosure 🙏. Thanks all and sorry for the long and rookie question 🙏

Does anyone know why archive.is doesn't work on tweets sometimes and if there's a fix to it? I've been archiving a lot lately and it works seamlessly with most sites but sometimes when I try to archive a tweet I get a blank screen that says "Not found (yet?)"

Recently I needed to buy new storage for my PC, mostly for film storing and watching, and maybe some school materials ( I study Mechanical Engineering ). After some research, my options were narrowed to Seagate Barracuda, WD Blue, and WD Red Plus. All of them have a 256MB cache, 5400PRM, prices are almost the same, except the Red one is about 20$ more.

My only concern is durability, as I want to keep my files as long as possible, I need reviews from those who used these.

I’m upgrading my NAS from 4TB drives to 16TB, and I could use some advice. After researching, it seems ServerPartDeals is the community favorite for reliable used HDDs, but I noticed that Recertified Seagate drives on Amazon are similarly priced. Here’s where things get tricky.

I have a large Amazon gift card balance that could cover about 1.5 drives, so I’m considering buying two from Amazon and the last one from ServerPartDeals. However, I’ve read mixed reviews about Amazon's recertified drives, with some reporting a slightly higher rate of issues. On the other hand, ServerPartDeals seems to have a stronger reputation for reliability, though at a higher cost to me personally.
