General community for news/discussion in the UK.

Less serious posts should go in [email protected] or [email protected]
More serious politics should go in [email protected].

Try not to spam the same link to multiple feddit.uk communities.
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric news, and should be either a link to a reputable source, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread.

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.

A different bias did a video on this also a few days back. He was blaming excessive cost on a massive increase shortages. There is always a shortage on some medical supplies due to the flow and ebb of use. With the UK we had between 10-20 before Brexit. This was in line with other countries int he EU. Now, because we are at the back of the queue, we have 150+ regularly on the shortages list. This has increased procurement costs massively.

Five adverts for the Chinese shopping app Temu have been banned in the UK for their sexualised nature, with one found to have been irresponsible in how it depicted a young girl to sell bikinis.

The company has been warned against presenting under-18s in a sexual way in future or portraying adults as “stereotypical sexual objects” after several ads featured “disembodied images of the women wearing tight and revealing clothing”.

The fast-growing tech business was reprimanded by the UK’s advertising watchdog after one of its ads used a model who appeared to be aged between eight and 11 posed with her hand on her hip, which was found to be “quite adult for a girl of her age”.

The picture appeared alongside ads for household products including a facial roller, balloon ties and a jockstrap which, as they lacked labels, “appeared to be items sexual in nature”, according to the Advertising Standards Authority.

...

The ads were shown alongside those for household objects that “could have been interpreted as sexual in nature”, according to the ASA. The facial roller and balloon ties were “phallic” and the foot massager “could also have been understood in the same way”

A jockstrap was “augmented in the crotch, emphasising the outline of genitalia” while some cycling underwear had pink padding at the back and “appeared as underwear with the bottom cut out”. A further ad, shown in a puzzle app, featured images of leopard-print underwear with the back removed and a woman wearing a short black skirt and tights.

The ASA found that the ads were “likely to cause widespread offence” as they appeared in media where adult-themed or sexual products were “unlikely to be anticipated”.

All this and potentially sinister practices on the app.

Dr Ahmed Sabra and other UK nationals make "a desperate appeal to the public that hold British values to help us."

Palestinian officials in Gaza had permitted him to cross with his family even though, unlike his family, he was not the approved list, and after three days on the Egyptian side waiting for the process to be complete, he was ordered back.

“The staff from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office that are supposed to help us at the Rafah crossing have vanished," Dr Sabra says.

Campaigners call Graham Stuart’s comments ‘laughable’ and say Conservatives are weaponising climate action

Oil and gas are “not the problem” for the climate, but the carbon emissions arising from them are, the UK’s net zero minister has told MPs.

In words that suggested the UK could place yet more emphasis on technologies to capture and store carbon, Graham Stuart said fossil fuel production was not driving climate change, but demand for fossil fuels, in a bullish defence of the government’s much-criticised stance.

Litter is blighting the UK’s footpaths, with an average 41 pieces found a kilometre, according to a major study. Particularly frequently found brands included Lucozade, Coca-Cola, Red Bull, Monster and Walkers.

The State of Our Trails report, conducted by Trash Free Trails, is the first UK study that aims to establish a scientific understanding of the environmental consequences of the tonnes of litter in our landscapes. It drew together more than 1,600 submissions by 4,500 volunteers and with the data the authors have estimated as many as 9.1m individual pieces of litter could be found across the UK’s 220,000km of public rights of way. The surveys took place between July 2020 and August 2023.

Lucozade was the most frequently found brand of litter, according to the report. The authors said they thought this might be “because of its identity as a ‘sports energy drink’. Many recreational trail users will view their activity as a ‘sport’, requiring challenge and exertion, and therefore additional energy. This may be particularly prevalent among those who are relatively new and/or novice trail users, and/or beginners in the activities that they are participating in.”

After Lucozade, the most commonly found brands were Coca-Cola, Red Bull, Monster, Cadbury and Walkers.

The Metropolitan police commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, has defied calls for a ban on a pro-Palestinian march through London on Armistice Day as he insisted on the independence of his force amid intense government pressure to act.

In a statement in which he acknowledged the demands for him to stop Saturday’s procession, Rowley insisted there was currently insufficient intelligence that there would be a risk of serious public disorder.

He stressed the importance of an “independent police service … focused simply on the law and the facts in front of us”, despite a chorus of cabinet ministers – including the home secretary and the justice secretary – insisting that the march should not go ahead.

When staff from Five Sisters Zoo in West Lothian travelled to Belgium in September to visit a bear that they plan to rehome later this month, they were not sure what to expect.

Less than a year earlier, Yampil had been only a few days from death when he was found by Ukrainian troops in the ruins of an abandoned zoo in the town near Donetsk that gave him his name.

But following his traumatic ordeal, the asiatic black bear appeared to show no scars of the shelling that destroyed his habitat or the Russian occupation that killed almost all of the 200 other zoo animals.

The Five Sisters zookeepers were pleased to find a healthy bear chomping merrily on a cucumber when they arrived at his temporary home at the Natuurhulpcentrum rescue centre in eastern Belgium – a world away from the videos they had seen of Yampil, dirty and concussed after a shell landed near his enclosure, being carried through the rubble on a tarpaulin by soldiers.
