Is this the same as other VPN services or is it more of a problem with Mullvad? Has anybody recently used another VPN service and has an anecdotal comparison?

It seems to affected on many sites and with ordinary Google searches

Link: https[://]mullvad[.]net/en/blog/removing-openvpn-15th-january-2026

We are removing support for OpenVPN, it will be completely removed on 15th January 2026.

The process of removing OpenVPN from our app starts today and may be completed much earlier.

Why

We want to focus entirely on the WireGuard protocol, as we explained in detail back in 2017 (https[://]mullvad[.]net/blog/wireguard-future).

By moving to a single protocol, we will be able to focus our resources where they can make a difference.

How does this affect you?

If you make use of our Mullvad VPN app on any platform, it will not impact you at all. Note that OpenVPN support will be removed from both client- and server-side, meaning that even if you have an old app with OpenVPN support, it will not work after 15th January 2026.

If you are using a router or a third-party app that uses OpenVPN, we strongly advise you to start migrating to WireGuard. You have roughly one year to complete your migration. We have guides on how to use WireGuard in the help section of our website (https[://]mullvad[.]net/help?Protocol=wireguard).

The future

WireGuard is the Future (https[://]mullvad[.]net/blog/wireguard-future)

For the universal right to privacy.

Mullvad does not attempt to provide multihop functionality to Android.

Please let me know your thoughts on why they don't provide multi-hop functionality.

thank you.

dig returns no answer section for us-sea-wg-socks5-103.relays.mullvad.net

All other servers are fine though. Please kindly fix. Has been like this at least for months, if not since forever.

It's really frustrating when you can change servers it works sometimes mostly it doesn't beat version installed

So I recently run into an issue, were I am able to fully consume 2.5GB/s Bandwidth with a single WireGuard connection and thus trigger my providers DDoS-Filter. Even throttling it down to under 2GB/s trips it due to the load of UDP packages.

Did anybody else ever run into this issue? Likely this is probably some lag, causing a short spike and overloads the filter.

Hello there

I currently use NordVPN and I am considering migrating to Mullvad since supposedly it's better regarding privacy.

But I found out it has some issues. Mainly the ones related to Streaming videos.

It also doesn't have a Password Manager. So it means I would have to pay for Mullvad and a Password manager apart.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Mullvad when compared to NordVPN?

I'm currently using MullvadVPN with NextDNS based on yokoffing's config suggestions through WireGuard, and I was wondering what people's practices are for using MullvadVPN.

Do you switch between tunnels from time to time, or stick to one tunnel and keep it on-demand? Do you use custom DNS, or Mullvad's built in DNS? Do you use WireGuard, or the native app? And why do you use a VPN/what are your goals?

I used to just use the native app, but I wanted to use NextDNS with Mullvad so I started using WireGuard. I have exactly one (1) tunnel that I keep on-demand. I've also just been sticking to one account the whole time, but I saw a comment on how you should be switching account numbers regularly?

EDIT: Adding some information on my goals for using Mullvad.

I'm not new to using VPNs, but I'm definitely knew to actually knowing anything about them. I don't want my data being sold and want to limit how much my ISP can see of my internet use. I don't think my internet is being monitored by my parents anymore, but I'm not 100% sure on that, so that's also a minor concern.

Overall, my goals are pretty surface-level in terms of privacy concerns, and I'm not looking to completely overhaul how I use the internet. The more secure I can be while still it still being somewhat convenient/not too much of a hassle after initial setup, the better.

I have Mullvad running with "always reconnect" but not "block all non-VPN traffic".

Over night, in the morning, I always see a notification saying that the VPN is disconnected. If I click on "open app" it opens Mullvad and will immediately reconnect.

I also have Mullvad installed in the Android work profile and it works without any problem.

What could cause this?

I just started using Mullvad for vpn while traveling. I’ve been really irritated by the Wi-Fi at the hotel not working well (slow, frequent disconnection) for a few days and just now realized that when I turn the vpn off it works just fine.

I thought Mullvad was supposed to be good, is this a problem that just I am having?

I’ve been able to disconnect from the VPN and browse the web normally for the past year. However, after the recent update, the killswitch option unexpectedly turned on and is now inescapable. Consequently, I can’t access the internet without Mullvad being active and me logging in via Wi-Fi before my Ethernet connection can be established. This implementation is utterly flawed. I’ve attempted resetting network settings, uninstalling Mullvad (which left me completely disconnected from the internet), and various other troubleshooting measures, but nothing seems to work. There’s no way to disable this feature. I’m essentially compelled to use the VPN 24/7 if I want to connect to my Ethernet connection. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Mullvad & UTM (zerobytes.monster)

Hi

I’m currently setting up a Mac Mini M2 (latest macOS) with Mullvad VPN (latest version) and running a Kali Linux VM through UTM (latest version). My goal is to route all traffic from the VM through the Mac host’s Mullvad VPN, ensuring my real IP remains hidden. However, I’m encountering issues:

1.Bridged Mode: This is the only mode where I get internet in the VM, but unfortunately, it bypasses the VPN, exposing my real IP.

2.Other Network Modes: I’ve tried all available network options in UTM, but with Mullvad active, I get no internet at all in the VM.

3.Multiple Linux Distros: I’ve tested this setup with various Linux distributions, but the issue remains the same across all of them.

Network Modes:

•Shared Network (NAT): No internet connection in the VM.

•Bridged Mode: Provides internet but bypasses the VPN, showing my real IP in the VM.

•Host Only: Blocks internet entirely, making it unsuitable for my needs.

•Emulated VLAN: This seems to solve similar issues for others, but unfortunately, it did not work for me.

Additional Configurations:

•Virtio Network Card: Tested both virtio-net-pci and virtio-net-device, but no difference in behavior.

•Mullvad Settings: The “Local Network Sharing” option is enabled to allow traffic from the VM to go through Mullvad, similar to setups on Windows.

•MacOS Firewall: Enabled but with exceptions for UTM and Mullvad VPN, so they shouldn’t be blocked.

•Isolate Guest from Host: Tried toggling this setting to enforce VPN routing, but it didn’t affect the outcome.

•Manual Static Routes: I attempted to route traffic within the VM to the host’s VPN interface (utun0), but received “no such device” errors, as utun0 is only available on the host.

Has anyone successfully routed VM traffic through Mullvad on a Mac host using UTM? I’d really appreciate any insights or alternative solutions. Thanks!

My question is at the end of my message here.

Background: I'm coming from a different VPN provider. With my existing VPN provider, one of my less-than-pleasant experiences is that many web sites do not function well with the VPN. I originally set up my existing VPN provider on my router, and experienced that the desktop machines connected through my router VPN would have trouble accessing web sites. So I shifted the VPN client to the individual desktop machine. After further experiencing a number of web sites that don't play well with the VPN, I use split tunneling, and have two different web browsers - my "VPN-enabled" browser and my "VPN-disabled" web browser.

I have now learned that Tor browser can accomplish a lot of what I'm trying to achieve.

What I'm trying to achieve: I'm looking to improve my privacy & anonymity, and have a pleasant "user experience".

Learning from Mullvad's web site:

For the best privacy, use Tor

For second best privacy, use Mullvad VPN + Mullvad browser.

There is also DNS over HTTPS and TLS.

What I see is that Mullvad provides a number of products and/or cooperates with Tor.

From the experience with my existing VPN provider, I'm expecting that if I were to use Mullvad's offerings, I might still break up my apps and web sites into buckets.

Buckets example:

  1. Sites/apps for which I have registered accounts/identification
  2. Anonymous sites/apps that work with Tor nicely
  3. Anonymous sites/apps that work with Tor poorly
  4. Anonymous sites/apps that work with VPN nicely
  5. Anonymous sites/apps that work with VPN poorly

Q. Does separating my apps/services into buckets such as the above example make sense with Mullvad's offerings? Can Mullvad suggest/describe such buckets, and how to configure Mullvad (and/or third-party) products/services accordingly?

I want to connect my private phone to Wifi at work. There's a guest Wifi that I'd like to use to save mobile data. However, I just can't connect. I know that the Wifi is restricted (e.g. can't access the Mullvad website) but I was hoping that with the new Shadowsocks feature I would be able to connect to the VPN on my phone.

My settings: * Auto-connect "on" * Lockdown mode (block connections without VPN) "off" * Local network sharing "on" (need it for a few apps like Localsend) * DNS content blockers and custom DNS sever both "off", BUT I have base.dns.mullvad.net set as Private DNS in the Android settings. (Reason: if I do it in the app, a bunch of websites stop loading, giving me DNS errors for some reason. Either way, there are no DNS leaks shown and the Private DNS method lets me load all websites.) * DAITA "off" * Wireguard port "automatic" * Wireguard obfuscation "automatic" * Quantum-resistant tunnel "automatic" * Wireguard MTU "default"

When I connect to the Wifi, I first get the error that the Private DNS can't connect. If I turn Private DNS off in the Android settings, I still can't connect in the Mullvad app. It just keeps trying to connect forever (while blocking the Internet).

I also tried setting obfuscation to Shadowsocks with an "automatic" port, but it didn't help either.

Any tips? I can't imagine that the firewall is clever enough to detect Shadowsocks, isn't that quite hard to do?

Hey,

I wanted to watch Netflix and my VPN is most of the time activated, I was connected in the same country. Is there a reason why i can't find shows and movies that i have without VPN? I thought nothing would change since it's still the same country.

Or can i somehow bypass the website netflix? Like you can use Split Tunneling for Apps?

I’ve been a loyal fan of Mullvad VPN for years, it used to be the perfect VPN. Lately, though, I’m really disappointed with the quality. Constant disconnections, trouble connecting to entire regions for minutes at a time, and terrible speed loss (forget watching videos outside of YouTube). Plus, most regions hit you with captchas constantly if you try to Google anything.

This is happening on both my mobile and desktop devices, and over the past year, the quality has dropped a lot. I’m starting to consider switching to a different VPN provider, even though I really don’t want to.

Am I the only one experiencing these issues, or are you having problems too? And if you could suggest a good alternative, that’d be great. I’m not a fan of ProtonVPN and don’t fully trust them after some of the privacy controversies they’ve had with anonymous email accounts. Privacy isn’t my top priority, but it’d be nice as an extra feature.

P.S. This isn’t due to any local regulations—my country hasn’t tried to restrict or ban VPN providers. So, it seems to be an issue directly related to Mullvad

I am trying to setup split tunnelling so the traffic to a specific ip is not routed through the vpn. I have added to following rule to nft:

table inet excludeTraffic {

chain excludeOutgoing {

type route hook output priority -50; policy accept;

ip daddr *IP* ct mark set 0x00000f41 meta mark set 0x6d6f6c65;

}

}

Ran mullvad connect while running iperf3, speeds dropped by almost 10x, while shwoing no use of wg0-mullvad interface

This rule is weird because it works if I run this rule after i connect to mullvad and it is persistent, but if i reconnect mullvad, it stays there as it should, but it doesn't work

I'm trying to ssh into that IP with ssh -B eth0 to force eth0 instead of using wg0-mullvad.

But the main problem is speed. while i hvae mullvad connected, while not being used by any other application and no overlaod or anything like that, the average speed through ssh is around 10-30mbs. if i disconnect mullvad i get around 200-300 mbs. I made sure wg0-mullvad wasnt being used for the connection. Is there something I'm missing here?

Edit:

Added speed screenshot

Can i use the proxy on mullvad? So i have mullvad on as a „second wall“, but my ip is the residential proxy.
