My strap checklist...

  1. infinitely adjustable
  2. keyboard friendly hardware
  3. quick change
  4. fray free
  5. durable/long lasting

Usual NATO strap hardware ends up under wrist, no good for an all day keyboard warrior.

Zulu hardware can be moved away from under wrist, but it's a hit or miss on sizing between holes. Annnd sooner or later, said holes fray.

Closest that meet above is Vario Cordura strap, rivets prevent fraying, Zulu Style is keyboard friendly. Those same rivets though are thick enough that one needs to undo springbar to change straps.

Another is RSM Herringbone Twill. all but fraying bit. As it's has adjustment holes that aren't reinforced.

Yet another is Marine National/French Navy style elastic straps like WatchSteward, covers all but the last bit. It unfortunately stretches to a noodly mess after a year of use? Granted said straps gets seawater donked around twice a week. Reserving this on Garmin Instinct Solar.

After using springmade for ~3 weeks, I can now check all my nitpicky requirements. From reviews on it's website there was feedback it heavier watches might cause slippage after a while. I can see smooth seatbelt style band eventually doing that. Ridges on the Ribbed and classic should(?) mitigate that.

Hopefully, this helps someone in same predicament?

I love reading Perezcope articles; the detail is fascinating to me.

Sharing here in case folks here haven’t come across him yet.

I wonder if anyone can tell me the brand and model of this kids (I believe automatic) watch I saw the other day? It was brightly colored with a fabric velcro strap, and featured a very unique dial and bezel.

The hours and minutes were both labeled with the numbers centered within the spaces between where the indices normally are, making it very easy to learn how to read analog time. The divisions around the watch look a bit like the Cupola windows on the international space station shown in the uploaded image.

I haven't had much luck googling for it. Ring a bell for anyone?

I have an Omega Dynamic Geneve from the 70s. The watch sits in a circular hole on the bracelet and screws in with a ring on the back, but the clasp is broken. It's says 1153/138 on the bracelet.

I tried buying a custom leather strap so I could wear it but the leather stretches unattractively over the edges of the fastening so I think I need to deal with the original braclet. I've been monitoring eBay for years at this point but the replacements are outrageously expensive.

Any advice for what to do with a sensible budget? Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place?

So I do have my own watch collection of swatches and various brands, but I noticed no one really posts anything about wooden watches. I've been pretty big on them the past couple of years and have 5, but I usually see more classic/staple watch posts on Reddit and now Lemmy (Reddit is dead to me).

What's your opinion; are you for or against wood Timepieces and why?

Can't wait for a strapcode bracelet to become available, since this colorway only is available with a leather nato, and I don't like to wear leather or nato's. I have some sailcloth and perlon for in the meantime though!

Are there any "affordable" (under $500€) Japanese watches that have actually good, or even great bracelets? It seems (online) that most Japanese watches at that price point are praised for their dials and movements but almost always the bracelets supposedly suck.

When I want a sensor watch I generally wear my newer Casio Pro Trek 3500, but I wore the Pathfinder 1300 for a long time and I'm still fond of it. I had screwed up the band a while back and finally got it fixed. It feels good to have the my old standby functional again.

Picked this up a week ago and loving it so far. Wears well for my larger wrist, about 8” and comfortable for all day. Dressed up or down.

I thought I'd share a picture of my Hamilton Kahaki Pilot Pioneer for my first post here on Lemmy.

Not sure how much I was going to like it but I decided to take a chance when I found a great deal on a used one at watchexchange a few months ago.

The watch wears very well on my smallish 6.75in wrist with the short lug-to-lug and the very thin 9mm thickness. Because of this, It has become my go to for most days.

One of my favorite features is the textured matte dial.it really stands out and gives it an interesting look when the light hits it.

I plan to hang on to this one for a while.

Cheers!

Just got it in the mail today. Feels nice on the wrist; soft and so far not sweaty.

There's something I've always wondered about mechanical watches with a date. Does advancing the date start you of in the "AM" or does it stay in whichever half of the day AM/PM you were already in? I've been advancing the date by turning the hands to ensure I know which half of the day it's set to, but maybe this isn't necessary? Sorry if my question isn't worded very well.

I am working on my PhD mainly doing lab work. When I first started, I bought a Tissot LeLocle Powermatic 80, which I absolutely love. However, in the lab, there's a lot of hazards for an automatic and I started taking it out fairly often. Is there an automatic that's not too expensive (ideally under 500 but sub 1000€ at most), somewhat magnetic and shock resistant? Been thinking that I'd like to get a Diver, but not a prerequisite

Thanks for your help, cheers!

I bought this Christopher Ward C60 #tide earlier this year, and I'm loving it! I purchased it on the bracelet, and also ordered the matching #tide strap.

Fit and finish is fantastic. I absolutely love their quick release bracelet! It's amazing! I really wish more watch bracelets had something like this. My other daily driver is a Speedy, and I would actually wear it on a bracelet more often instead of sticking to NATOs and other quick release straps if it wasn't such a pain to switch. This watch feels great on the wrist. At 42mm, it's arguably just a tiny bit too big for my 6.75" wrist, but it feels perfect to me. At least it's not one of those ridiculous giant Invictas, right?

The highlight of this watch is the wave pattern on the transparent blue dial. The waves are a little bit lumed, so even in the dark, it's got character. I'll be honest, though, I'm a bit underwhelmed by it. Compare my photo to the one on their website. When I took my photo, I'd been out in my backyard for an hour or two "watching the smoker," (read: laying in a hammock, scrolling Lemmy, occasionally glancing at temps) and then went straight to the completely black garage. So it would have been plenty charged up. You can see the waves, for sure, and I still think it's a cool effect. But it's not anywhere near as bright as their marketing photo suggests. But the wave pattern and the semi-transparent dial still look great even in daylight, so it's not a super big disappointment.

I'm not a scuba diver, but I've taken it swimming in the ocean and a lake or two, and it keeps on ticking. It's got 600m water resistance, which is more than enough for anything I ever plan on doing with it. But there's an awful lot of watches that cost many multiples of this one with only 150, 200, 300 meter ratings, and everyone knows how "accurate" those are anyway. So this one having double the usual depth rating was still nice. I don't need it, I don't really care, but the big number makes me feel better. I bought this to be my GADA watch, so having double the usual depth rating was reassuring, even if the "DA" in "GADA" won't ever mean diving to anywhere near 600 meters for me. It means I don't have to care. That's what I'm going for.

I can't really comment on it's accuracy, because i don't wear it every single day and I don't keep it wound, but when it's on for a few days in a row I don't have to change anything. It's absolutely good enough for me, but I'm not you. It's a Sellita SW200 movement, I imagine if you're subscribed here, you probably don't really need me to elaborate.

This was my first experience dealing with international shipping, and it went smoothly. I got an email from DHL when the watch arrived in the States, paid something like $90 for customs, and the watch was at my door maybe 4-5 days later.

Christopher Ward's customer service is great, too. A couple months after I bought it, I somehow managed to lose one of the keepers from the strap, slipped off somehow I guess, lost to the fifth dimension. I sent them an email asking if it was possible to get a replacement keeper without buying a whole new strap, and they sent me one. Totally my fault but they fixed it anyway. Go them!

All in all, I'm totally happy with the purchase. It's one of my two dailies (for now...), and it will be in the rotation for a good long while. It's great looking, great feeling, keeps good time, goes swimming, and it also glows in the dark a tiny bit more than most other watches. I'm just a rando on Lemmy, but if you're coming here for opinions, you can't go wrong with this one!

Awesome little watch! Got it for $109 after coupons. Great value for a 28,800bph, 72 hour power reserve and a sapphire crystal.

I need more activity here because I like looking at watches so I figured I'd do my part and post my new watch box. Left to right top to bottom: Speedmaster 3520.50, Breitling A13340, SARB, Seiko KS with a rad grey brushed linen dial, Breitling Aerospace, Bulova Sea King, NTH Nacken sub homage. I should have bought the Aerospace first because it's the only watch anybody needs.
