Let me start off with this stating that I do not have any religious beliefs, and no answer to this post should contain any hate or propaganda for a religion.

You’ve probably all seen this situation in Sweden with someone burning the Koran. I’ve seen that this was allowed by the authorities. Would something like this be allowed in Switzerland? With some cantons still being kinda attached to church (like the one I live in, Vaud). Or would burning the Bible for example also be allowed? This is also more generally a question regarding the importance of religion in these cantons, as I don’t know a lot about this.

Feel free to discuss, but please remember no hate or something like that. Also, I’m fine with answers in German and/or French.

Thanks!

Salut!

Hi there!

My name is Lydia. I have been working in Geneva for 4 months now. I have found it difficult to make friends since here, so thought I could take my chance on reddit!

I'm 24 years old, I speak Spanish, French & English, and I'm currently learning German. I enjoy reading, fitness, cooking good food, nature and travelling.

Let me know if any of you are in the area and looking to make some friends. 😊

hey! my fiancé and i are planning to go to Switzerland (Luzern) for our honeymoon and we thought of visiting Hotel Vitznau for one night. the BIGGEST thing though - we are doing this in Jan (04th Jan, 2024) and we were wondering if the pool they have (which is breathtaking) is operational & heated during that time. would you have any idea? 😅

I'm wondering if it'll manage to go up Zürichberg, so I can explore some of the hiking trails there.

I have access to a small Xiaomi e-scooter but the thing really struggled to the point that I had to push it along, so it's no good for exploring that area.

I'm 98 kilos.

I was surprised to see that toppreise.ch doesn't seem to include stuff on amazon.de, amazon.it and amazon.fr. It would be super helpful to see the stuff that is shipped to Switzerland compared in one place, since I often find myself checking each website.

Does anyone know if there's a reason they're not included?

Hi All,

I have just arrived in Switzerland today and planning on going to my local gemeinde tomorrow to register. However I’m not sure what the correct gemeinde is for the area I am in. Is there a resource online where I can put in my address and see where my gemeinde is? I tried looking online but couldn’t find anything

Hi everyone. As you may know, students who reside in Lausanne for study purposes have to pay a residence tax of CHF 37.- per month. And the website of EPFL states that a request for exemption from the tax is possible for those with a Swiss or foreign scholarship.

I have a scholarship from my country (non-EU). With this circumstance, could you please provide information on whether there is a specific form required for students in Lausanne to request an exemption from the residence tax? If so, where can this form be obtained and submitted? Additionally, what documents or information would be needed to accompany the form to support the request for exemption? As a note, I will stay at FMEL throughout the year.

Thank you.

Kiddo lives with me in London, attends a French school (autistic but top of his class in French & maths), will go on to French Lycée after this year. But (he’s an amateur geographer) wants to live in Bulle (FR) eventually, never mind his commune d’origine is Bremgarten (AG) which he visited a few weeks ago with me, and Bulle too (he knew all the streets and where to find McDo). French is his mother tongue, English bilingual, German nada.

So: should he aspire to going to uni in Fribourg and if so does he need to be fluent in German beforehand? I keep telling him to look to engineering for study & career.

I'm a former gymnasium student who graduated a few years ago, and I would like to share my thoughts on the Swiss public school. (I recently had a conversation with other foreign students)

The things I liked :

  • The infrastructure of public school is great in Switzerland, it's a good environment for learning.

  • The students are united and respect each other. (No discrimination or bullying)

  • Some teachers are very motivated and helpful.

The things I didn't like :

  • Too many subjects.

  • The examen are a bit unfair. A friend, who was in another class but in the same year, had a teacher who made harder examen than the teacher of our class. We should have the exam per canton.

  • Lack of multiples choice questions in the examen.

  • Some teachers allow us to use a computer in class but some don't. It's complicated for the student to have half of the note on the paper and half in OneNote.

  • Some teachers don't give written support. I had to write everything the teacher had said orally. If you're sick or didn't finish to summarize, it's your problem.

  • Some teachers aren't organized, they will give a bit of this paper and then another one...

  • The teachers have a lot of freedom. I didn't learn the same thing as my friend and vice-versa.

  • Some teachers don't give the answer sheet, you have to listen carefully the answer verbally said by the teacher.

  • Some teachers teach quickly and don't understand why some students don't understand the material (which seems obvious to the teacher) and get upset. The student ends up being afraid to ask questions.

  • The curriculum is a bit old : I don't know why we should learn the name of every country, recognize which types of stone is it, analyze a poem...we could just google it these days. I would have preferred to learn about the conflict between China and the United States or what roles Switzerland must play to keep its wealth.

  • To conclude, it would be better to have the same textbook for every student and have an online support(video, training paper and answer), we could draw inspiration from the international baccalaureate.

I've been living here for almost 1 year. I've had a few Bumble dates (let's say 10 or fewer) and didn't really meet anyone that interested me enough. I feel i don't get any good matches here. I wonder if I should just ditch Bumble (and other dating apps as well) and just focus on trying to meet women IRL. I've used dating apps in other countries and was able to get great matches and dates, but it seems like here online dating doesn't work so well.

Hi, so got the contract for an appartment and the rent is a fixed price but the Nebenkosten are "akonto' and can vary...

So there is a fixed "akonto" price that I am supposed to pay every month but it can be more, i guess?

Is this normal or is this something I should avoid in the appatment search?

Thank you so much!

Hey guys, I want to port my prepaid number to another company but I have more than 30chf as credit. Do you know of any way to use them (apart from calling or data). I believe that you can use your credit to buy stamps or pay at some selecta machines. Is that right? Do you know any other use?

Hi there

In my searches for a car I can see that most of the used have 4x4/AWD and the new market present tons of options with it as well.

Is this a must have, nice to have or not necessary? Take in consideration Lausanne or other cities with steep climbs and descents...

ps. Yeah, I know, public transportation works, but it's beside the point here

Cheers

Hallo zusammen.

Twice I have been hiking the jurat or other mountains and come across people having fires outside of any designated camp fire areas but rather just in the trees. Yesterday I was near Le Chalet-À-Gobet and came across a still smoldering/smoking campfire that had clearly been left smoking overnight, and doused it in water as it was starting to light up again.

Does anybody know if there are federal or cantonal rules around fires in nature preserves or hiking areas, and where do I find them? I like our forests and want to keep them whole.

Hi, does anyone know how I can use a SBB Railcheck I got as a benefit from my employer? I don't want to use it for GA or any kind of monthly/yearly pass. I was thinking if it's possible to swap it for a SBB voucher I can use for several normal tickets.

Going to Switzerland next week for the first time. Should I expect there to be places that only provide Type C outlets? or am I safe to assume every hotel should have a Type J outlet? Would like to get the grounded outlet but dont want to do that if we show up in a hotel with only Type C outlets. Thanks!!
