If you've never seen the 'Baltimore' trilogy, here are the movie titles.

Baltimore Trilogy in Release Order:

  1. Diner (1982)
  2. Tin Men (1987)
  3. Avalon (1990)
  4. Liberty Heights (1999)

Now, here's a list of how to watch the movies in chronological order and the year each movie takes place in. I recently watched these movies in the latter order for the first time ever and it was actually more fun this way.

Baltimore Trilogy in Chronological Order:

  1. Avalon - 1910, 1948, and 1950
  2. Liberty Heights - 1954 and 1955
  3. Diner - 1959
  4. Tin Men - 1963

I wish Barry Levinson would make more movies in his 'Baltimore' trilogy set in the '70s and/or '80s. What do y'all think?

I just finished watching The Shawshank Redemption for what feels like the zillionth time, and yet, it still overwhelms me with emotions. I’m sitting here in tears, completely moved by its brilliance.

Brooks’ story always breaks me. His struggle to adjust to the outside world after a lifetime in prison, and that devastating letter before he takes his life, hits so hard. It’s a painful reminder of how freedom can feel like a prison when the world has moved on without you.

But then there’s Andy and Red’s friendship—a beacon of hope amidst all the despair. The bond they share is so pure and life-affirming. Andy’s unshakable optimism and Red’s journey from cynicism to hope is the heart of the movie. That scene where Red finds Andy’s letter by the stone wall? It gets me every single time.

This film is such a masterpiece, balancing the crushing weight of despair with the uplifting power of hope and connection. What do you guys feel when you watch this movie? Do their stories hit you as hard as they do me, especially Brook’s?

I mean, that's how she's coming across. I saw "Babygirl" and I don't know what movie the critics saw and raved but this wasn't it.

Not sexy in any way, there's barely any sex or nudity (which wouldn't be a problem if the film had any heat) and I genuinely couldn't understand how Nicole Kidman is being seen as an Oscar contender for this movie when she can barely follow through with a expression when her face is botched and frozen. She looked like the Joker.

I don't like to talk about someone's appearance in a movie unless it is distracting and I'm sorry, actors need to stop freezing their face due to vanity because it limits their expression. Actors need those facial muscles.

And Nicole Kidman is giving a Joan Crawford vibe lately. The older she gets, the younger her male romantic interests get and the whole movie star diva in her twilight years. Kidman is a decent actress but she's no Isabelle Huppert.

Julianne Moore is the ideal for me. I saw her in The Room Next Door with Tilda Swinton. Now, that's acting for me.

Where do you see all the different endings? I don’t get it.. I watched it with my cousin (she had watched it already) and we got a different ending than what she had got before We searched about them and stuff but like where do you see the alternatives? Like, are the endings just randomly sorted? I don’t get it.

as many of you probably know, the tv version of my cousin vinny had alternate lines recorded, instead of just bleeping out curse words. the dvd version has over 100 fbombs, and i much prefer the tv version.

i cannot seem to find the tv version on demand on any service, nor for download or purchase/rental. legally or otherwise.

is there a way to watch this without signing up for cable and catching it on fox when it happens to run?

i have tried search terms like 'tv edit' 'fox' 'edited' etc etc

Back around 1978-1981ish, my little local cinema very unsuccessfully attempted to do some Sunday afternoon double features.

Not many people came, but I was there and I loved it.

I want to recreate that vibe, but sadly I only remember three of the movies I saw.

I do remember that I saw Escape From New York and Alligator on the same day. I'm so excited that I've found both as 4K bluray!

I also remember them showing The Warriors, which I'm getting soon.

I cannot for the life of me remember which other movie was at that showing.

But...

I would love to hear suggestions to match up with The Warriors as the 2nd feature.

And I would love to hear your suggestions for "cult double features" that go well together. Approx same time of release and vibe.

What do you recommend?

What are your favorite five movies that debuted anytime from January 1 2015 to December 31 2024?

My personal top 5, in no particular order:

  • 1917 (overall favorite)
  • Mission Impossible 6: Fallout
  • Infinity War
  • Lion
  • Parasite

My only movie regret from the past decade is I didn’t see 1917 in IMAX. In fact, I didn’t see it until it came out on streaming, but was totally blown away by it, and it’s my overall favorite movie from the past decade.

EDIT: Ten years ago actually starts Jan 1 2015, not 2014. So am replacing Interstellar on my list with Infinity War

Without question one of the best films I saw this year. An absolute masterpiece from Clint. It has the essence of some of the great thrillers of the 90’s and keeps you sucked in right until the end. I think it is a shame and a downright crime that Warner Bros. decided to release it in such a poor way. The performances are outstanding. JK Simmons’ screen time is brief but powerful, and Hoult deserves an Oscar for this one no question. What did everyone think?

Ever since I saw her in Batman Forever as a kid, I have been a fan of hers. Recently, I have been on a Kidman Kick and have been watching movies she has done. I watched To Die For, Eyes Wide Shut, and The Others and she was fantastic in all three of them. I’m planning on watching Moulin Rouge and Rabbit Hole eventually. Any other Nicole recommendations?

I saw Nosferatu last night and it had me thinking, what original movies that have been made recently - let’s say since 2010 - do you think will be remade decades from now? For me, I think something like Terrifier where there’s an iconic villain feels like it will be remade and reimagined far into the future.

Here are several of these genre continuity roles I've noticed for some actors:

  • Adrien Brody playing a Nazi-surviving urbane Ashkenazi Jew in The Pianist (2002) and The Brutalist (2024);
  • Russell Crowe starring in 2 recent pulpy religious horror films: The Pope's Exorcist (2023) and The Exorcism (2024); and
  • Nicholas Hoult moving up the social ladder in Dracula media universe from Renfield (2023) to Nosferatu (2024).

Don Johnson was, maybe, the biggest TV star of the 1980s and 1990s. He led a few Action flicks in the 90s. But soon fell off the radar and returned to Television in Network TV in lacklustre efforts.

Then I saw him in Django Unchained in 2008

And Eastbound and Down in 2010. And Cold in July in 2014. And Brawl in Cell Block 99 in 2017. And then The Watchmen in 2019. And recently in Rebel Ridge this year 2024

I'm proud of his comeback. He's an underrated yet reliable actor.

He maybe cast as the villain mostly, but let's not forget - he's not only good at it, but I can only wonder what other 80s actors could be having the success he's having now !

I haven't seen Tom Selleck in ages. I've seen David Hasselhoff here and there, but not to the extent that I've seen Don Johnson. I'm glad Lee Majors is still with us, but also not to the extent Don Johnson is killing it right now.

Anyway, that's all I wanted to say. Thanks for reading.

I will say nothing about the films style, structure, tone. I went in blind and it was very rewarding. It was expertly made and I'm so glad the Miramax hacks' plans to take over the film failed. This movie rocks.

Onto Willa. I only know her from Reacher. She was fantastic. So many moments where I thought, I've never seen that before! One scene in particular, where she's fighting exhaustion, she was doing so much with her face and body, conveying so many whirling feels and sensations...I'm in awe.

I hope the director makes more shit. This film is a 10/10 for me.

From the death of the video rental stores (especially with Blockbuster), to the Sony Pictures hack, to the rise of streaming and the misguided push from the major studios by creating their own or rebranding one, to the Harvey Weinstein scandal which leads to the #Metoo movement, and the big blow of it all was the Disney/Fox merger resulting one less major studio to make movies and less variety now.

And honestly those factors feel like the reasons why this decade so far as far as mainstream movies goes has been less than stellar.

It's sad too because there was a time a studio would greenlight a quirky comedy like Zombieland or Hot Tub Time Machine or the Oscar bait but crowd pleasing drama like Argo or The Martian. Now those kinds of movies are so far in between and mostly become Netflix filler even if the film is good it's buried by a cluttered algorithm.

What are the best foreign and indie films of 2024? I usually make a list of my favorite movies each year and am wanting to watch more foreign and independent films this year. My favorite movies the last few years have been foreign and indie films (RRR, Godzilla minus one, etc) so Im worried that I’m missing out on great movies. Im open to hearing about movies from all genres and countries. As long as there are subtitles available for the movie where it is listed.

I posted a similar post at the beginning of this year and am interested to see to what recommendations people have.

I've only watched a handful of movies this year that I think will be contenders come award season. I'm not specifically looking for films with Oscar buzz, but I want recommendations of films of that caliber.

What were your favorites this year? What are the must-see movies? Tell me what to watch., including foreign films.

My faves this year were Challengers, Civil War, and Flow. I've seen Wicked and Dune 2, Emilia Pérez, Small Things Like These. Anora, A Complete Unknown, and Nightbitch are on my list.

When I was younger, my favorite movie on earth was The Parent Trap with Lindsey Lohan. Of course, watching it as a 7 year old I would wonder if I had a secret twin I’d meet at summer camp. As a kid, I would think about how cool it’d be to have a twin, what if I switched places with her, I wish I went to that summer camp, etc etc. Well, I’m aware we should re-read things & re-watch things years later to see how our perspective has changed & it was so wild to watch as an adult in my 30’s. I was curious about the Mom’s point of view. What if my ex husband was engaged, but my daughters wanted me to work things out? Would I have gone on the camping trip? Was that a plan to break them up? Would I have kissed him in the wine cellar? Also, the ending when he did come after her when that’s what she wanted before when younger, honestly made me cry because I was so happy for her. Just makes you think, thanks for reading!

The Item 9 opening in Pineapple Express is one of the best comedic movie openings of the 2000s. I'm not a huge Seth Rogan and James Franco buddy film guy but the opening of this movie is forever etched in my mind. Bill Hader deserves all the credit for this, he was the perfect balance of wacky and whimsical that most stones can relate to. We sit around in the basements and back patios of the world smoking and joking, this scene optimized this feeling for me. Just an opinion but I'm willing to hear others thoughts

Just saw a pretty interesting theory in another thread about The Blair Witch Project that was pretty compelling. Do you have any crazy (and by that I think 🤔 I mean unique, uncommon and/or otherwise significantly change the more traditional interpretation of the movie) theories that you think are very compelling or outright subscribe to?

Sudden Death is a ridiculous movie. At no point can you take it even remotely seriously.

Early on, Van Damme has his probably toughest fight in the entire movie against a 110 pound model in a mascot costume.

Van Damme then spends the rest of the movie trying to save his kids who got caught up in a plot to kill the vice president along with every one else in the stadium.

He’s dodging machine gun fire from bad guys throughout the entire film while a very important hockey game is going on.

However, Van Damme does find a way to make it on to the ice as goalie to make a very important goal save in the third period. He then signs “I love you” to his son in the stands.

After watching Sudden Death I feel like Threat Level Midnight may be a more sane movie than what this movie was.

Was watching Bullet Train tonight, not the first time I've seen it, but Brian Tyree Henry was the most convincing American actor portrayal of an English accent I've ever encountered.

I was convinced he was British, only to Google him and find he is American. Brilliant accent and portrayal.

Who else has done such a convincing Anglo/American or American/Anglo mastery of the respective accents?
