Whatcha playing?

I have been playing a tonnnn of UFO 50. I am absolutely obsessed with this game. There are so many fun and high quality games in this collection. I'm impressed with how polished and interesting every game is. I really feel there is something for everyone in this collection

The limited-time demo (link for the lazy) has no DRM, so all you need to do to preserve it beyond its expiration date is copy the folder it's installed to somewhere else. This works with most limited-time demos on Steam.

You can also copy the large number of DRM-free games on the platform to other systems or create backups of them using the same method. Here's a (likely ver incomplete) list:

TL;DW:

  • Many enhanced games are getting raytracing when they were using simpler lighting solutions previously
  • A surprising handful of games are getting 8K modes, though the 8K usually turns off other enhancements like raytracing. They mentioned GT7 and F1 2024 as two examples.
  • Most enhanced games are focusing on creating a "Performance Pro" mode, which more-or-less gives you the previous quality mode, but at 60fps. Some devs are planning on adding a "Quality Pro" mode that turns on even more features at the cost of FPS.
  • Most enhanced games are using PSSR to upscale from 1080-1440p to 4K.
  • PSSR seems to be better than FSR, but still a little worse than DLSS. Oliver noted a few cases of image breakup and ghosting around the edges.
  • Horizon: FW is not using PSSR, but somehow it seems to be the best-looking of all the enhanced games (in Oliver's opinion).
  • FF7R is dramatically improved image quality wise - previously, performance mode was real fuzzy.
  • Dragon's Dogma 2 is getting about ~50 FPS in the troublesome city scenes, but this is with RTGI turned on so that's pretty impressive.

This trailer was revealed during the recent State of Play. I really like the look and atmosphere. They clearly had a good look at Death Stranding, but I love that game so this seems right up my alley. What do you guys think?

Rockstar Games' servers have been under heavy fire from massive DDoS attacks in recent days, causing widespread login and connectivity issues for players of GTA Online. These attacks come in the wake of Rockstar’s recent implementation of BattlEye, a new anti-cheat system designed to crack down on in-game cheating, sparking backlash from a segment of the player base. Protesters, unhappy with the new system, have resorted to using distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks to disrupt the servers, escalating tensions between the gaming giant and its community.

Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2828860/The_Forever_Winter/

The Forever Winter, which has launched in early access today, is a grim dark take on the PvE extraction shooter.

I'm pretty sold on the art style and premise, but will be holding off until a little later to play the game as it looks pretty rough around the edges.

Has anyone played / is planning to play this game?

Another trailer that was presented at the recent State of Play. The art style and atmosphere look absolutely incredible to me!

[alt text: a post on twitter by @Ranting_Trans, posted in June 2022. The text in the post says: "People only ask 'what is a woman' and not 'what is a man', because that question was already answered by the greatest philosopher of our time: Dracula". Below the text is a screenshot from the game Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which shows Dracula saying, "What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets."]

You see, The Plucky Squire falls prey to one of modern gaming’s most well-intentioned, but still utterly annoying, sins and overtly tutorializes everything. When it deigns to allow the player to pop out of their storybook for a 3D platforming level, the camera pans across the entirety of the stage outlining the intended path before you’ve even really set foot in the world. Even within the confines of the 2D world in the book, The Plucky Squire will often deploy humorous narration via onscreen text and a corresponding voiceover, which adds flavor to the game but also explicitly communicates what is expected of you at every turn.

At just about every step of the way, the game lacks any faith in your ability to figure out solutions and paths forward for yourself, preferring to bludgeon you over the head with answers before you can even be afforded a chance to think for yourself. It’s a frustrating wrinkle in an otherwise charming tale.
